ACN sues CROSIEC over LG poll charges

Africcon Blogspot Report: The Action Congress of Nigeria in Cross River has dragged the State Independent Electoral Commission before the court over what it termed imposition of “certain arbitrary charges.”

Reports Says; The party alleged that the action of CROSIEC was capable of scaring opposition party candidates from contesting the September 21 local government election in the state.

At a press briefing in Calabar on Tuesday, the state ACN chairman, Mr. Hilliard Eta, said the party was challenging the issues based on its knowledge of the stipulations of the Electoral Act on the responsibilities and boundaries of electoral umpires.

Eta said a similar matter, which came up some years ago, led to a litigation by the late Gani Fawehinmi, compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission to stop collecting charges from candidates.

It was gathered that CROSIEC had been charging N100,000 as screening fee, nomination fee, processing fee, non-violence fee and refundable deposit from chairmanship candidates, while councillorship candidates were being made to pay N60,000 for same charges.
