Former Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Deputy Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) Interim Executive Committee, Hon Aminu Bello Masari said, yesterday, that the party has the capacity to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

He, however, identified lack of discipline, organisation and resources as the problems hindering the activities of opposition in the country.

Masari also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the process of registration of political parties as well as make provisions for independent candidates to contest elections.

He said “opposition in Nigeria cannot win elections in Nigeria unless we merge under the APC. The performance of the opposition in the FCT is a mirror that we tried as much as we could. If we had gone into that election as a merger we would have had better results. If there was unity we would have performed better. So, it is clear that we must have APC registered as a political party.”

Admonishing the opposition he said “the problem of opposition is that it lacks discipline and organisation. Opposition in Nigeria is very weak and cannot win election. Unless we merge under APC we cannot beat PDP.

“The most important thing is organisation, there cannot be organisation without discipline and if you are disciplined, you will succeed. Opposition is a serious business and for opposition to succeed there must be discipline built around ideology and principle,” Masari stressed.

Earlier, the General Secretary of Alliance for Credible Election (ACE), Emma Ezeazu, said that strong opposition was the key to democracy, and added that if there was strong opposition, competition would be very high and the ruling party would be up and doing.
