Rivers State Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has called on the federal government and the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to transfer the state commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, without further delay.
This is even as he said state government under his administration would soon stop funding the police following its inability to deliver and protect the life and property of citizens.
The governor’s call for the transfer of the police chief came as the kidnappers of the three members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in the state have demanded N20 million as ransom before their captives could breathe the air of freedom.
The corpers, two males and a female, were kidnapped at the Corpers’ Lodge in Community Secondary School, Ogonokom in Abua/Odua Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Amaechi, who spoke when the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Chief Gordon Bozimo, led a delegation to pay him a courtesy visit at Government House in Port Harcourt, said the call for the redeployment of the commissioner of Police became necessary following the recent upsurge in insecurity and other criminal activities, including kidnapping in the state.
The governor accused Mbu of derailing from his legitimate function of protecting lives and property in the state, saying; “We used to have a wonderful security system and commissioners of Police, who understood their functions and knew what to do. But, when the Police in Abuja, suddenly withdrew the predecessor of this present Commissioner of Police and posted the person called Mbu Joseph Mbu, nothing has been working again.
“Mbu have been sitting with politicians for political reasons and the security system is down and out. Since he came, we have never had peace. We have held Security Council meeting two or three times. But before Mbu came, we used to hold security meetings two or three times every month.
