Emergency Rule: Only 1,500 Nigerians Fled To Cameroon – Ambassador

Africcon Report: Emergency Rule: Only 1,500 Nigerians Fled To Cameroon – Ambassador
Africcon New Media – News
Covered By Africcon Media – Emergency Rule: Only 1,500 Nigerians Fled To Cameroon – Ambassador
From Africcon Media
The Nigerian Ambassador to Cameroon, Ambassador Hadiza Mustapha, yesterday, said that over 1,500 Nigerians have moved into the northern part of Cameroon in the wake of military operations in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe State.
This, according to her, is contrary to reports in the media that the number of refugees has clocked over 3000, and added that the 1,500 persons was confirmed by the UN Refugee Commission and the Cameroonian authorities.
“What I have seen in the media is over 3000 refugees in the northern part of the Cameroon. But when we asked the authorities there we were told they are 1,500 and the UN Refugee Commission is taking care of them.
“What is also good and which is also an indication of good relationship is that, unlike in some countries where refugees would be given just a few days or weeks or months to leave their territory once situation normalises but the authorities have told us that our people are here, the UN system is looking after them, and they have not given us deadline to get our people back to Nigeria”, the Envoy stated.
Addressing Journalists ahead of the summit of Heads of States and Governments of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC) on maritime safety and security in the Gulf of Guinea billed to begin today, Mustapha said that the collaborative effort between security forces of Nigeria and Cameroon had yielded fruitful results against the activities of Boko Haram.
“This is what happens, as long as you cannot choose your neighbour you can choose how to live with your neighbour, that is why peace is very important. I have been here for 10 months and since we put the Bakassi issue behind us, there has been a lot of improvement in our relations. And with that improvement a lot of cooperation is now possible.
“We have also signed a trans-border security agreement with Cameroon. That is a very good document, it is a good achievement because in that document we have virtually agreed to exchange information, do joint operation, help each other to deport suspected criminals. It is not for terrorism alone,it is for all other trans-national or trans-border criminal activities. This has also contributed to a lot of economic and political relations,” she said
Mustapha also said that Nigerians living in Cameroon were very well behaved, hardworking, law abiding and holding the economy of Cameroon together in critical areas.
“We are going to visit the north after this summit and also get in touch with the Nigerian authorities handling that. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has already been in touch with us and we have given them this information. So it is under control”, she assured.
She said, “You know the story of the Cameroons and the Cameronian gendarmes, I come from a border town so I know. It is true that some are high- handed, that the gendarmes don’t seem to have a very good reputation but this is not only with Nigerians.
“There were a lot of these cases in the past but like I said with the improvement in the relationship, I have spoken with all the security agencies over these concerns and I have been given assurances and I have no reason to doubt the assurances that I have been given, that no Nigerian will be targeted specifically because he is a Nigerian. All they want is for us to sensitise our population to be law abiding.

APC Interim Mgt: CPC Concedes Secretary To ANPP

Africcon Report: APC Interim Mgt: CPC Concedes Secretary To ANPP
Africcon New Media – News
Covered By Africcon Media – APC Interim Mgt: CPC Concedes Secretary To ANPP
From Africcon Media
After days of brinkmanship and delays within the ranks of the opposition, the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) has eventually conceded the position of secretary to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in the proposed All Progressive Congress (APC).
The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which got the office of chairman, had agreed with the CPC to zone the secretary’s office, which is the second most important office, to the CPC.
But the ANPP had kicked against it and insisted on the office because it had three states, Borno, Yobe and Zamfara, as against CPC’s one state (Nasarawa).
That had mainly been responsible for the delays in constituting the management committee all along.
The CPC, however, got the office of deputy national chairman, treasurer, deputy secretary, and youth leader.
The ANPP last Saturday raised a committee, headed by its national chairman, Ogbonnaya Onu, to distribute the slots allotted to the party in the APC merger arrangement.
The committee, constituted at the NEC of the party, was also mandated to continue merger talks with the other partners.
The offices allotted to the ANPP include national secretary, national financial secretary, deputy national organising secretary, national welfare secretary, deputy national publicity secretary, two vice chairmen, and two ex-officio members.
Others in the Onu-led committee are governors - of Borno State, Kassim Shettima; Zamfara State, Abdullazeez Yari; and Yobe State, Ibrahim Geidam.
Also in the committee are the former governors of the party, including Senator Ali Modu Sherrif, Senator Sani Ahmed Yerima, Senator Buka Abba Ibrahim and Ibrahim Kwankwaso. The national secretary, Tijjani Tumsah, and national treasurer, Alhaji Shaibu Musa are also in the committee.
The 89-member merger committee, drawn from the merging parties, had last week announced the end of their assignment of streamlining the modalities for the emergence of the interim leadership of the merger party.
They also referred further work on the registration of the APC to the individual parties.
However, the parties will meet today to harmonise their positions and fill all the offices before submitting the final list to INEC this week.

Jonathan’s loyalists may control new PDP NWC

Africcon Report: Jonathan’s loyalists may control new PDP NWC
Africcon New Media – News
Covered By Africcon Media – Jonathan’s loyalists may control new PDP NWC
From Africcon Media
There are strong indications that President Goodluck Jonathan’s loyalists may dominate the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee after the party’s special convention in July.
Already, supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party leadership have initiated moves to ensure that some immediate past members of the PDP National Working Committee do not return to the committee.
Investigations by AFRICCON MEDIA on Sunday revealed that the President and Tukur’s loyalists have also identified some prominent PDP members who lost out during the party’s 2012 national convention as aspirants that must be stopped from being elected into the NWC at the forthcoming convention of the party.
Such politicians are those said to be against Jonathan’s 2015 ambition and Tukur’s continued leadership of the PDP.
Our source in Abuja said that the loyalists decided to move against such politicians on learning that they had started reaching out to see if they could be favoured in the forthcoming special convention of the party slated for July 20.
The source boasted that the ambition of some of the eight NWC members who resigned during last Thursday’s 61st committee meeting of the party, to return to their former offices would not be feasible.
The eight – Dr. Sam Sam Jaja (Deputy National Chairman), Abubakar Mustapha (National Organising Secretary), Alhaji Garba Chima (National Youth Leader), Chief Solomon Onwe (Acting National Secretary), Kema Chikwe (Woman Leader), Victor Kwom (National Legal Adviser), Chief Olisa Metuh (National Publicity Secretary), and Bala Kaoje (National Treasurer) – were among 17 officers of the PDP whose positions were voided by the Independent National Electoral Commission for not meeting the party’s guidelines.
Our source in the PDP said, “Jonathan is in charge. Tukur is also in charge of the PDP. I can tell you that any member of our party perceived to be against the President’s 2015 ambition and Tukur’s leadership of the PDP can not be elected an NWC member. Quote me. The President’s loyalists and many of our governors in support of the chairman have started what I call ‘stop them moves’. So, I do not see how they can seek election on July 20 when our special convention would hold and win.”
Jaja is seen as an ally of the Governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who has been suspended from the party. Governors close to Amaechi, who heads the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, are believed to be the arrowheads of the oppostion against Jonathan’s 2015 ambition and Tukur’s leadership.
Investigations showed that some hawks in the party have already started pushing for Jaja’s replacement with another candidate.
In this regard, the name of the former occupier of the office, Mr. Uche Secondus, who is also from the state, is being touted.
Secondus, though a native of the state, was loyal to Amaechi but shifted his loyalty during the crisis that led to the disqualification of former Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Timi Sylva, from running for a second term.
Also, intense lobbying is said to be ongoing to prevent Kaoje from returning to office as he is said not to meet the constitutional provision for the office.
Kaoje is an engineer, while the PDP constitution stipulates that the party’s treasurer must be an accountant.
Chapter V of the constitution, which states the duties and qualifications of national officers, says, concerning the treasurer, “a national treasurer shall be an accountant with track records of prudence.”
Apart from this, Kaoje is said to have argued against the suspension of the Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko, by the PDP leadership.
He was one of the few members of the NWC, who advised against the governor’s suspension.Wamakko has however been recalled.
Kaoje’s action was termed as “anti-Jonathan” by some close allies of the President.
Our correspondent gathered that it was because of the pressure to replace some of the officers with the President’s loyalists that made the convention committee to call for fresh nominations.
Already, Chief Chyna Iwuanyanwu, who is vying for the office of National Publicity Secretary, has hailed the call for fresh nomination.
While commending the call for fresh nomination, Iwuanyanwu told our correspondent that the action of the party showed it was patriotic.
He said, “The development has once again proved that the PDP is a party of patriots and democrats with unqualified credentials and statesmanship.
“The decision will heal the wounds of 2012 national convention by allowing delegates to choose their leaders through a transparent, open, democratic process.”
The Secretary of the committee, who is also the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, confirmed the re-opening of nomination for the offices.
He, however, said that the committee would keep to zoning.
Ekweremadu said, “We are going to keep all the positions within the zones, but within the zones, if there is any strong reason for us to change a particular candidate, that will happen, but for now, we are going to keep all the positions in the zones that are keeping them presently, we are not changing the zoning formula of the NWC members.
“We are reopening nominations, yes, we are reopening nominations. This is a new convention, they will pay, it is not the old convention.”
Apart from this, almost all those appointed to the committee are known supporters of the President.
Among them are Prof. Jerry Gana (Chairman), Governor Godswill Akpabio (Deputy Chairman) and Governors Theodore Orji (Abia), Shehu Shema (Kastsina), Gabriel Suswam (Benue) Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta) and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi).
Also on the lists are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Pius Anyim and the Political Adviser to the President, Mr. Ahmed Gulak.
“These people are not there for fun. They are there to screen the list of all aspirants and weed out those considered to be anti-Jonathan,” a Presidency source said.
Meanwhile, the hope of the South-West to replace the former National Secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, may be stalled as a result of the court action he instituted against the party.
The former governor of Osun State is still in court challenging an Abuja Federal High Court ruling, which said that the faction that produced him from the zone before the national convention elected him, was not the correct one.
But Oyinlola, who was the candidate of the governors at the 2012 convention, is presently in court contesting the court ruling.
Oyinlola’s election at the convention was however not faulted by the INEC’s report.
Tukur has however said the recent reconciliatory efforts made at the end of Thursday’s NEC meeting has started yielding positive results.
He said that many state chapters of the party had started receiving members who defected from other political parties.
Tukur was reacting to what happened in Nasarawa State where he received defectors from the Action Congress of Nigeria, Labour Party, All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change in Lafia.
Tukur said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Oliver Okpara, that all the defectors would receive equal treatment .

Africcon Report: Manchester United's hopes of signing Thiago in doubt
Covered By Africcon Media – Manchester United's hopes of signing Thiago in doubt
The 22-year-old's father Mazinho met with Barcelona president Sandro Rosell on Friday to discuss the prospect of an improved contract at Camp Nou
Manchester United's hopes of signing Thiago Alcantara are in doubt after the midfielder was given assurances of an improved deal by Barcelona.
The 22-year-old's father Mazinho met with the Spanish club's president Sandro Rosell on Friday, when the prospect of a revised contract was discussed, so Thiago now has a concrete offer which would allow him to remain at Barcelona.
But the Spaniard could still opt to join United in a move worth just €18 million after the value of his release clause plummeted having failed to participate for a stipulated amount of minutes in 2012-13.
Reports in Spain have suggested that the youngster is unhappy with a lack of playing time at Camp Nou and is concerned that a lack of improvement regarding his squad status will jeopardise his chances of featuring at next summer's World Cup with Vicente del Bosque's Spain side.
The midfielder has not publicly expressed his desire to move clubs this summer but he insisted through Spain's Under-21s European Championship campaign that his future will be addressed after the tournament.
Thiago was one of Spain's standout players in Israel and his hat-trick helped Julen Lopetegui's side secure a 4-2 victory over Italy.
David Moyes, who will officially begin his reign as United manager on July 1, has identified Thiago as one of his priority transfer targets this summer.
United's veteran midfielder, Ryan Giggs, labelled Thiago as a "big talent" earlier in June. "I've seen him in several games," the former Wales international told Marca.
"He's a good player but there's always a lot of speculation with United and good players. We'll see if it happens in the end but he's a big talent."

Africcon Report: ARSENAL have agreed to sign a player who almost quit football to become a POSTMAN.
Covered By Africcon Media – Gunners push the envelope
ARSENAL have agreed to sign a player who almost quit football to become a POSTMAN.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has given his stamp of approval to Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo, 20, handing him a four-year deal.
Sanogo delivered 10 goals in 13 games last season for his Ligue 2 club. But the France Under-21 international revealed he was close to packing in the game after a double leg break in 2010.
He said: “I felt there was no point in me continuing and putting my health at risk.
“I couldn’t run any more, the doctors didn’t know what my problem was and I felt disgusted.
“I told my mother that I was going to work for the Post Office.
“But one day I tried to run once more, it went well, and I recovered bit by bit.”
Sanogo, a target for Lille, said he was won over by the first-class treatment he received from Wenger and Gunners scout Gilles Grimandi.
The striker added: “Gilles came to watch me at Auxerre and he invited me to a hotel in Paris. Arsene Wenger was there to welcome me in person.
“I was very impressed that he had come all that way specially. He told me I would get my chance at Arsenal.
“He said he’d been following me for years. The journey he’d made convinced me to join Arsenal.
