Report Says: The Lagos State Police Command vows to secure release of kidnapped Briton

AfricCon Blog Report - The Lagos State Police Command, has said that investigation aimed at setting free Lee Dixon, a British expatriate abducted in Lagos earlier in the week, was ongoing.

State police spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, who gave the assurance, confirmed the incident happened on Wednesday, adding that an operation to secure the hostage was already on.

A statement on Friday, by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, had explained how the incident occurred.

The gunmen, it said, about 8.30 pm on Thursday, at Mafoluku environ, forcefully seized the victim.

The area is close to the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to FAAN spokesperson, Mr. Yakubu Dati, “An expatriate, Lee Dixon, a Briton, who arrived on KLM from Armsterdam, was kidnapped around Mafoluku area at about 2030 hours (8.30 pm), 18/07/2013. His driver, Kojo Jacobs, an employee of Russell, an oil services company based in Lekki, was driving him in a black Kia Sportage registered, MA 266 EKY, when they were accosted.

“The gunmen shot the driver and took away the expatriate; the driver is receiving treatment at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos.”

At the moment, it is yet to be ascertained if the abductors had made any demand for ransom.

Earlier, the Airport Police Command denied that the incident occurred within the airport.

Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Bayo Ajileye, maintained nothing of such happened under his jurisdiction, insisting that the airport was safe and secure.

Public Relations Officer of the Airport Command, Dennis Ifijen, who expressed surprise at the news, said “I’m not aware of it; we don’t have it in our records. I’m surprised because I’ve not heard anything like that.

“I don’t know where the information came from. It did not happen here,” he stressed.

We have been vindicated ; Says - APC Governors on visit to Rivers

AfricCon Blog Report - The Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that the visit by Governors on the platform of yet to be registered All Progressives Congress, APC, to Governor Rotimi Amaechi, has justified its accusation that the Governor was carrying out anti-party activities.

The party maintained that in view of the unfolding political events in the state and the current influx of opposition members, Amaechi was only waiting for the right time to dump the PDP.

In a statement signed by Jerry Needam, Special Adviser on Media to the State PDP Chairman, Hon Felix Obuah, the party said it’s no longer hidden that Amaechi has pitched his tent with the opposition.

He alleged that the Governor plans to destroy the PDP in Rivers State before leaving finally.

According to him, “Governor Amaechi does not leave anybody in the dark as to his moves and plots as proved by the solidarity visits of four Northern Governors on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 and that of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Governors, the Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, Governors and All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Governor, under the umbrella of All Progressives Congress, APC, Governors today Thursday, July 18, 2013 in Port Harcourt.

“While Governor Amaechi thinks he can deceive the people over his suspension by the PDP, he is very busy proving that he no longer belongs to the party.

The spokesman lamented that such comment is contradictory and equally a lie.

The party however regrets that Rivers State is the loser, as Amaechi is no longer attending to state issues and may have decided to waste tax payers’ money in hosting his political fans within and outside the state.

“This is a development unheard of in the political history of any nation where a sitting governor prefers to deny the people their rights for cautioning him. How can we describe this but unfortunate.

“We will continue to call on Governor Amaechi to please stop wasting the hard earned resources of the innocent Rivers people to enrich his friends and fellow conspirators against the state,” the statement concluded.

FG has begun the recruitment of 500 qualified engineers for nation’s 10 new power plants – Gov. Fayemi

AfricCon Blog Report - IN Abuja –  The Federal Government has begun the recruitment of 500 qualified engineers for the effective running of the nation’s 10 new power plants.

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti made this known to State House correspondents after a meeting of the Board of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo in Abuja on Friday.

Fayemi, who is also a member of the board, said the exercise was meant to address the critical challenge of lack of skilled manpower in the nation’s power sector.

He said that lack of skilled manpower was threatening the smooth take off and operations of the new power plants built across the country.

”We also looked at the National Power Training Institute (NAPTI), all of these plants are coming on stream and we are excited about them.

“But one critical challenge that the country faces is the lack of skilled manpower for managing the plants.

“We do not want to have plants that turned out to be white-elephant or they turned out to be run by Chinese, Germans and Europeans who have built the plants.”

The governor frowned at the quality of engineers being produced by the nation’s universities and polytechnics, saying that such engineers were not employable in the power sector.

He, however, stated that NAPTI had since commenced massive retraining programme for local engineers and artisans who might be redeployed to operate the new power plants.

“You all know, I’m not telling you anything new, we have engineers being produced by our universities that are not necessarily employable and you need to retrain them in order for them to be able to function in these new plants that are being built.

“And NAPTI is intended to fill this gap by helping to retrain many of the engineers as well as artisans who will be needed to fill the gaps that are bound to exist in the new power plants that are being set up.

“So, we received the report from NAPTI Executive and from the ministry of power on our own interest and contribution.

“And a range of things were discussed in ensuring that those who come on stream, about 500 people are being recruited now to undergo training in NAPTI.

“And in addition to that, we need to ensure that this is done professionally through open advertisement, but also being mindful of spread and federal character in the course of this recruitment. ”

Fayemi commended the General Electric (GE) Company for building a local plant in Calabar for the production of spare parts for the nation’s power plants.

“We are asking all the manufacturers to take a cue from GE and set up plants here.”

He condemned the recent attack on one of the power plants in Delta, saying the incident had impacted negatively on the government target of energising 4000 megawatts by the end of the year.

“I’m sure you are aware of the attack on one of the plants in Delta State and the impact that might have on our earlier promise.

“We are still very confident that we will deliver according to the  promise.” (NAN)

: Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC target Ashley Williams

According to AfricCon Blogspot Sports News - Swansea are believed to be prepared to sell Williams, but only if their £10million valuation is met.

Blog -  Ashley Williams admits he is flattered to be linked with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, but insists he is focusing on starting the new season with Swansea.

Arsenal and Liverpool have both been linked with Williams for some time, and reports earlier this month claimed the Gunners have already agreed personal terms with the Wales international.

But Williams is refusing to pay too much attention to the speculation about his future at the Liberty Stadium.

"It means you're doing something right and people are talking about you at least," he told Sky Sports News when asked about the reported interest in him.

"I take it as a compliment. I don't really read the papers and that type of thing.

"You don't really know, as that's the future, and I can't really say. Different circumstances determine different things.

"I'm working hard trying to talk things through with the squad and the manager on the field, and trying to iron out a few things for the season."

Report Says:
The Court of Appeal, Abuja division has upheld the impeachment of the former deputy governor of Taraba state, Sani Abubakar Danladi.

Blog -   In a unanimous judgement of five-member justices of the appellate court delivered by Justice Musa Abba-aji, the court dismissed the appeal brought before it by the impeached deputy governor for lacking in merit.

The court held that the Taraba state House of Assembly complied with section 188 of the Constitution in his impeachment.

The appellate court then upheld the judgment of the Taraba state High Court delivered on March 19, 2013.

Danladi, who was impeached by the Taraba state House of Assembly in September 2012 for gross misconduct and engaging in private businesses, had gone to the court to challenge the processes and constitutionality of his impeachment.

Counsel to the deputy governor, Yunus Usgaz Usman (SAN), had amongst others, challenged the competence of the state acting Chief Judge, Justice Josephine Tukur, who instituted the panel that investigated his client over the alleged gross misconduct having overstayed in the office for three months.

The former deputy governor then headed to the Appeal Court, challenging the decision of the trial court which upheld his impeachment.

Fasehun said, “I went to Kano to hand over Al-Mustapha back to his people safe and sound

AfricCon Blogspot – News
Report Says:
I went to Kano to hand over Al-Mustapha back to his people – Fasehun breaks silence

Blog -  Elder-statesman and founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, Friday hit back at his critics, especially the Yorubas, who condemned him on his support for Major Hamza Al-Mustapha and Alhaji Lateef Shofolahan who were recently freed from prison.

Speaking at a press conference attended by some Ijaw youth, and led by Coordinator of Ijaw Monitoring Group, IMG, Comrade Joseph Eva in Lagos, Fasehun said he played the role to defend justice and equity.

He noted that the verdict of the appellate court evidently vindicated his earlier stand that Al-Mustapha was a victim of “some power that be.”

Fasehun said that facts abound that he always had sympathy for the Abiola family, especially the children of the late Kudirat Abiola, whom he said, “joined OPC at the dawn of the group, and actively encouraged the growth of OPC. We worked together in NADECO.”

The OPC boss insisted that going by the evidence before the court, there was no doubt that Al-Mustapha and his co-accused knew nothing about Kudirat’s murder.

He therefore called on the government to go after Kudirat’s killers rather than waste taxpayers’ money in further prosecuting the case.

He said: “The real killers of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola is still at large, out there. A fresh hunt must be launched to unmask her real killers, as well as those responsible for the killings of Bola Ige, Harry Marshall, Alfred Rewane, Funso Williams, Odunayo Olagbaju, Ogbonnaya Uche, Theodore Agwatu, Barnabas and Abigail Igwe, Bisoye Tejuoso, Aminasoari Dikibo, Philph Olorunnipa, Ayo Daramola, Olaitan Oyerinde and MKO Abiola”

On why he followed Al Mustapha to Kano, Fasehun said, “I went to Kano to hand over Al-Mustapha back to his people safe and sound, through Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso and the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero. It was a request Al-Mustapha made, which I was too glad to grant.

“Something frightened me about Kano –the crowd. Ladies and Gentlemen, I have seen crowds in my lifetime, but nothing I ever saw compares to the huge mass of humanity, that turned out to welcome Al-Mustapha back home in Kano.

“It justified everything I did to fight for this Military officer. Can you imagine if this man had died in Lagos! How would that crowd greet the news of his death? What degree of reprisal wouldn’t they have unleashed on the millions of Yoruba people in their midst? Would we not have sentenced our kinsmen to certain death –avoidable death? Today, the Yoruba in Kano walk tall.

“In Kano, Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso described me as the ONLY BRIDGE-BUILDER Nigeria has ever known. When I left Kano last Sunday, 45 Northern dignitaries escorted me to the airport. Such appreciative gestures not only compensate for all the insults I received over the Al-Mustapha case, they indicate that I had achieved my quest for a-handshake-across-the-Niger.”

On the trial, he said what culminated into the freedom of the accused persons were, ”the inordinate delay of the trial, and retracting of supposedly confessional statements erstwhile made by principal prosecution witnesses.”

He noted, “several paradoxes cropped up in the course of the trial to show that the Prosecution actually was taking not just Al-Mustapha but the entire nation for a ride.”

He also listed contradictions in the case to include : “Conflicting witness accounts, prosecution witnesses’ refusal to return for cross-examination, failure to tender any ballistic report on the murder weapon, the inability to provide the actual murder weapon and absence of a voluntary confession from Al-Mustapha.”

He therefore called on Nigerians to now, “put Mustapha’s case behind us and make way into the future. The Lagos government must stop wasting taxpayers’ money and immediately dismantle the team it assigned to prosecute the case

Contrary to the ceasefire; Jonathan denies ceasefire deal with Boko Haram

AfricCon Blogspot – News
Report Says: Jonathan denies ceasefire deal with Boko Haram

Blog -  Contrary to the ceasefire deal announced last week by the Special Duties Minister, Kabiru Turaki, President Goodluck Jonathan has said there has not been any peace talk so far between the Federal Government and the outlawed Islamist sect, Boko Haram.

Jonathan made this declaration in an interview on Cable News Network, CNN, yesterday, saying that his administration was already wiping out violent groups in the country.

However, Jonathan’s affirmation contradicted an earlier report by Turaki who had affirmed that the Federal Government had gone into a ceasefire deal with the leader of the dreaded group.

“We have reached an understanding with them (Boko Haram) for ceasefire, which they have already directed and which we have accepted. We are working on the formal agreement which will follow in due course,” Turaki said.

On the contrary, Jonathan said there was no deal with the sect. Hear him, “No negotiation, no. In some other parts of the world, I don’t want to mention names here, it is not negotiation. The issue is that I’m not begging. But if you are somebody’s daughter and you are not doing what is right, and if you are in a secondary school or you are in a school and people observe that this young lady is not doing what is right; the way she dresses, the way you talks, some people will come through the mother to talk to the daughter or your school teacher to do that. That is what we are doing. It is not negotiation.”

According to him, the concept of terrorism was totally strange to Nigeria “Of course, terror attacks and suicide bombing was not known in our country before. It is the newest security challenge we have and when it started as it were, we did not have the terror architecture and the time to deal with terror, so we decided to deal with the ordinary criminals. But when it came, we were taken aback, but now we are building up. Recently, there was an attack in a school where 29 students were killed. But in terms of the frequency of the incident, it has gone down drastically and we are working very hard, and I believe if you are to interview me again, probably in three months time, you would praise me that the government has tried in terms of fighting terrorism in Nigeria.”

On the approach being employed to fight the scourge, Jonathan said: “Of course, you tackle terror from various angles. First of all, you must stop them or reduce their effect through military intervention. That we have done, and that is why we declared a state of emergency in the three states, where those terror attacks were predominant. In Nigeria, for you to enter a house, whether a living home, a factory or a religious place, you must get a search warrant approved by a court, but where you declare a state of emergency, the security people are free to enter even your bedroom if they suspect that there is a criminal there. So, the issue of state of emergency helps security people to search freely without contravening any law, and we are doing that and it is helping us to apprehend a good number of them,” Jonathan added.
