Mourinho could bring €35m Porto star to Chelsea

    From: Africcon Media
Chelsea transfer news: Jose Mourinho makes Eliaquim Mangala a priority at Stamford Bridge
Paris Saint-Germain FC v FC Porto - UEFA Champions League
Jose Mourinho has identified Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala as a potential transfer target for Chelsea, according to French newspaper L'Equipe.

The Real Madrid boss is expected to be named as the new Stamford Bridge manager next month, and the report claims he's prioritised the signing of Mangala from the Portuguese champions.

But the 22-year-old French star will not come cheap. Porto are notoriously savvy negotiators, and L'Equipe claim they're holding out for €35m.

The spending restrictions imposed by Financial Fair Play could stop Chelsea from splashing out, with the club keen on other targets as well.

A new striker is thought to be high on the list of priorities, while Mourinho will likely want to assess and strengthen the squad significantly on his arrival.

Mangala's impressive performances in Portugal have been rewarded with a first call up to the France senior squad. The young defender will be hoping to make his international debut in one of the two friendlies against Uruguay or Brazil.

Porto signed the centre-back for just €6.5m from Belgian club Standard Liege in 2011, and the French international has become a star this season after his first campaign largely restricted him to a substitute role.

Chelsea have a history of purchasing players from Porto - particularly after Mourinho first took charge in 2004.

Paulo Ferreira, Ricardo Carvalho, Deco, and Jose Bosingwa have all completed the switch from Porto to Stamford Bridge in the past 10 .

Chelsea transfer news: Jose Mourinho wanted Blues to beat Barcelona & real Madrid to Neymar signing
    Neymar
Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign Neymar and asked Chelsea to sign the Brazilian after it became clear he would be leaving Real Madrid.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Mourinho did initially want Santiago Bernabeu president Florentino Perez to beat Barcelona to Neymar’s signature.

Barcelona eventually won the race as Sandro Rosell had acted more quickly than his rivals and Neymar’s desire was for a switch to Camp Nou.

However, the report claims it was by no means a forgone conclusion and Santos were willing to sell to the highest bidder.

Once Mourinho realised his time at Real Madrid was up, he then indicated to Chelsea he wanted Neymar at Stamford Bridge when he arrived.

The report claims Mourinho saw the 21-year-old as the perfect statement of ambition to return to Chelsea with after a damaging season that saw him finish without a major trophy.

Neymar was linked with a move to Barcelona for some time and there was little surprise when they announced they would be unveiling him as a new signing on Monday.

However, this latest report from Spain suggests it wasn’t so cut and dried a deal that many believed it to be.

Pep Guardiola will struggle to improve Bayern Munich

  • Africcon News
Africcon Media Report: Pep Guardiola will struggle to improve Bayern Munich
    Africcon New Media – News

    From: Africcon Media

FC Barcelona v RCD Espanyol - Liga BBVABayern Munich opinion: Pep Guardiola has it all to do to amass Jupp Heynckes' achievements at the Bavarians

Bayern Munich wrapped up a brilliant season of European competition with a last-gasp 2-1 win over arch-rivals Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

They finally exorcised the agonising ‘finals demon’ that seemed to jinx them in the past two of three finals. Bayern lost to Inter and more recently (perhaps most painfully), lost last season’s defeat at their own backyard to Chelsea in a match that they completely dominated.

That heart-breaking anguish fuelled their pursuit this season and redemption was achieved. Along the touchline, another tale took shape as the outgoing architect, retiring manager Jupp Heynckes, celebrated the second of what could be three trophies won in a profoundly dominant season.

Already champions of Germany in record fashion, Heynckes' Bayern steamrolled to the Champions League final with authoritative two-legged victories over European powerhouses Juventus and even more impressively, a 7-0 aggregate demolition of Barcelona.

Bayern showed intent from their first group game and maintained the tempo, quietly disposing their opponents with little fuss. With the European crown now in the bag, only Stuttgart in next weekend's German Cup final can prevent Bayern from claiming their historic treble and a place among Europe's greatest-ever teams.

Personally, Heynckes is not far behind.

A Champions League winner with Real Madrid in the 1998/99 season, he can claim two European titles, three Bundesliga crowns and much of the credit for Bayern's potential place in history.

Even for a manager of Pep Guardiola’s pedigree, that leaves very little room for improvement. He won all there was to win at Barcelona and elevated them to the highest echelons of club football. Pep’s Barcelona became the ultimate blueprint of brilliance, the team everyone looked up to.

Now, after a certain team from Germany completely walked over them, scoring seven times while conceding none in the process in a show of total and absolute domination, the flag-bearers have changed.

It’s no longer Barcelona, it is Bayern.

Pep, the tiki-taka mastermind who revolutionised the passing game and won 14 major trophies in Catalonia is set to take over at Bayern in a month’s time. For the remaining days, there is only one thought that will constantly be etched in his mind, what can possibly be done to improve the team he is about to take over.

His task will be made all the more easier by the capture of Mario Gotze and even more telling, Robert Lewandowski is reported to be close to agreeing a deal. Bayern have such an impressive strength in depth that players such as Holger Badstuber (injured at the start of the season), Toni Kroos, Mario Gomez and even Arjen Robben were used sparingly. Add to that, their productive youth academy hint at a very strong possibility that Bayern, with Pep, may possibly be dominant for as much as a decade, and that is a very long time.

Pep is a proven winner and a great man-manager. He will instill his passing philosophy on a group of players who already look at home in possession. Bayern were second only to Barcelona in possession stats in the entire continent, Jupp’s Bayern. Pep’s Bayern must surely keep the ball more. Their now retiring coach has brought back belief in them, mental strength even.

Bayern have it ingrained in them that they are better than anyone who comes before them, just look at the way they went about tearing Barcelona apart. There is no fear in Munich, and all that credit goes to Heynckes.

He has turned this group of under-achieving players into thoroughbreds. His legacy has been secured, what with the broken records and silverware. No man could have left Bayern in a healthier state. 34 years on the touchline deserves such a fitting send-off, a looming treble.

Pep takes over the reins at a club in its highest ebb and with a firm foundation for the future. It will not be easy but in all honesty, all things considered, the only way for Pep to go, and Bayern Munich, is lateral. He will need a miracle to top Heynckes’ Bayern.

Nigerian Newspapers: Quality education deepens democracy–Aregbesola
    Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

From: Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

AregbesolaOsun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has said the provision of quality education to the citizenry is capable of deepening the country’s democracy.

Speaking at the presentation of a book  in his honour, Rauf: Hero of the People, on Wednesday Aregbesola said a people imbued with quality education would be “easy to lead but difficult to suppress”.

The book is written by a human rights activist, Segun Mayegun, and a linguist, Abosede Kalejaye.

Represented by a Senior Special Assistant on Youth, Sports and Special Needs, Mr. Michael Odesanya, the governor said a well trained youth was a blessing to his society.

Thanking the authors for documenting some of his political engagements, Aregbesola said his administration would continue to invest in quality education and strive to better the living conditions of the masses.

The reviewer of the 93-page book, Chijioke Nwasomba, said the personality and politics of Aregbesola had become a reference point locally and internationally.

Nwasomba, who lectures at the English Department of Obafemi  Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, described the book “as a worthwhile venture for a society that is dire need of heroes and heroines”.

Nwasomba said, “The Nigerian society has been hijacked by the decadent and corrupt-minded forces to such a level that cynicism and despair have become the order of the day.

“Where there is a deviation as can be seen in the character and achievements of the current Governor of the State of Osun, it deserves to be documented and celebrated with a view to instilling good values and virtues in youths, who ultimately will be the future leaders of the society.”

Nine-man gang attacks Fuji artiste, Pasuma, snatches car

Nigerian Newspapers: Nine-man gang attacks Fuji artiste, Pasuma, snatches car
    Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

From: Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

PasumaA nine-man  gang attacked music artiste, Wasiu Alabi, aka Pasuma, in Ahmadiyya end of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway on Monday night.

The robbers snatched Pasuma’s Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle with number plate Lagos, MUS 830AP, and dispossessed him of other valuables.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the singer, in company with a friend, was on his way to a show when he was attacked by the culprits.

It was learnt that some of the culprits forced their way into Pasuma’s vehicle and drove him around for over three hours before dumping him into a bush near Ota, Ogun State, and made away with the vehicle.

An associate of the singer, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the incident occurred at about 9pm.

The source Pasuma was not identified by the robbers because he hid his face.

He said, “On Monday night, Pasuma was on his way to perform at a party but on getting to Ahmadiyya, he was attacked and the culprits took all his money and his mobile phones. His friend, who was in the car with him, was robbed as well.

“The robbers then took control and drove Pasuma around for about three hours. While he was in their custody, Pasuma hid his face from them so the robbers did not know he was the one. When it was about 12 midnight, they dumped him and his friend in a bush at Itele area of Ogun State.”

Our correspondent learnt that some sympathisers were able to help the victims to get transportation back home

The matter was said to have been reported at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters while efforts were being made to recover the vehicle.

When contacted on the telephone, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the police had commenced investigations into the robbery.

She said, “The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tunde Sobulo, was informed and he sent signal to the control room. Efforts are on to recover the vehicle and apprehend the robbers.”

Emergency rule: Reps bar Jonathan from spending Adamawa, Borno, Yobe funds

Nigerian Newspapers: Emergency rule: Reps bar Jonathan from spending Adamawa, Borno, Yobe funds
    Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

From: Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

JonathanPresident Goodluck Jonathan and the House of Representatives members are set to be on a collision course over the emergency rule in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, as the chamber yesterday voted against the president using the statutory allocations to the states to fund the emergency rule.

Relying on 305 of the 1999 Constitution, President Jonathan on May 9 declared a state of emergency in the three states. Both the House and the Senate last week approved the emergency rule.

Section 3(e) of the Transmitted Emergency Powers (General) Regulations 2013 provides for the “utilisation of the funds of any state of local government in the emergency area.”

The House had, during the consideration of the proclamation on Tuesday rejected the section, but a Conference Committee  that interfaced with the Senate approved it last Thursday.

At yesterday’s session, the chamber said the president lacked the constitutional power to fund the emergency rule with the allocations of local governments and states concerned. A total of 194 of the 197 members that attended yesterday’s plenary asked the president to run the emergency with funds from the Federal Government purse.

The lawmakers expressed disappointment at the manner with which their resolution of 21 May, 2013 on the utilization of the funds of the affected states and local governments were overruled at the conference committee of the two chambers.

To demonstrate its seriousness that the presidency must stay away from the allocations belonging to the three states,  the chamber  deleted Section 3 (e) of the Transmitted Emergency Powers (General) Regulations.

In addition, the lower chamber pleaded with the Senate to concur and adopt the new resolution.

The motion was moved by Ibrahim El-Sudi (PDP, Taraba). He said the matter was constitutional and that by virtue of Section 305 of the Constitution as amended, the president was empowered to do declare a state o emergency in any part of the country.

El-Sudi, who headed the ad hoc committee that investigated the near collapse of stock exchange last year stressed that in considering the details sent to the National Assembly, the House of Representatives resolved  resolved to appoint a six-member conference committee to meet with the Senate’s five-member team to harmonized differences if there was any.

He recalled that when the conference committee of both chambers met on Tuesday, May 22, 2013 to considered areas of differences, the committee adopted the Senate version on the Proclamation Order.

He said: “The committee also adopted clauses 3 © and (4) of Senate version of the Emergency Powers (General) Regulations 2013. The committee further adopted the addition of the words ‘in Public Order, Peace and Security’ and included the House version of clauses 1, 2, (3) and 5 © of the Emergency Powers along with the Explanatory Note.

“Aware of the fact that Section 3 (e) of the Transmitted Emergency Powers (General) Regulations 2013, which provides, for the utilization of any funds of any state or local government in the emergency area’ was unanimously rejected and deleted by the House but retained by the conference committee of both chambers.

“Further aware of the public outcry and outright opposition by majority of Nigerians especially indigenes of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa on the content of the above quoted regulation.

“Mindful of a near consensus of opinion of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) and constitutional lawyers across the country regarding the constitutionality of the said action.

“Further mindful of the provisions of Section 5 (2) of the Emergency Powers Act no. 1 of 1961 (as modified) which provides: ‘(2) Any such regulation. Order or rule may, without prejudice to the validity of anything lawful done there under, at anytime be amended or revoked by resolutions passed by both Houses…

“Concerned that the Supreme Court of Nigeria has in a plethora of decided cases interpreted the intent and purport of Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution as amended on the finances of the states and local government of the federation and on whether Federal Government via National Assembly can validly make laws conferring power or imposing duties and state functionaries.

“Further concerned that chapter 1, part 1 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, Nigeria is a federation and operates federalism as a system of government with states retaining a large measure of independence and autonomy.

“Encouraged by the Supreme Court of Nigeria pet Niki Tobi in the case of A G, Abia versus A G, Federation (2004-2007) 3 LLRN pg 1360 at pg 1332 for the National Assembly to acquaint itself with the decision of the court on all matters relating to law referred to it avoid taking contrary action.

“Further encouraged by the need to ensure that our laws, orders, resolutions or regulations are not in conflict with the 1999 Constitution as amended or any court decision which we all swore to preserve and protect.

Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (ACN, Lagos), who supported El-Sudi said the constitution was clear, though the Supreme Court could reverse itself on earlier pronouncement in the light of new evidences and facts.

He said: “But in this case, it was clearly stated that under no circumstances can the Federal Government seize the funds of states or local governments.”

Gbajabiamila highlighted the frustration of the lawmakers on how their resolution of the utilization of funds was disregarded at the conference committee, saying: “I can’t understand why because, the outcome negated all the efforts put into the document by the House.”

He, however, attributed the use of language as part of the problem of the document saying: “On the use of administration, if on one hand the administrator was given powers to carry out sweeping functions, what is there for the governors of the affected areas to administer?”

The only voice against the motion, Kingsley Chanda (PDP, Rivers), who said situation in the affected areas was not normal as the constitution was suspended was shouted down by his colleagues.

In his ruling, the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal said the adoption of the harmonized version was accompanied with several voices about the impropriety of the document.

When he called  for the voice vote, 194 lawmakers voted in favour  of the  motion.

According to him, there is no means of communication because of the disruption of connection links by mobile phone operators.

My life under threat, Amaechi speaks out … after PDP suspends him

  • Nigerian Newspapers
Nigerian Newspapers: My life under threat, Amaechi speaks out … after PDP suspends him
    Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

From: Nigerian Newspapers Media – Nigeria

amaechiHours after PDP’s decision to suspend the party’s membership of Executive Governor of River State, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for violating the Article 58 1 (b), (c), (h), and (m), Amaechi reacted by soliciting prayers from the citizens of the state against frantic people who he claimed were after his life.

The reaction of governor reflected the strong opposition from his loyalists and some party officials who termed this as a continued supremacy of lawlessness in the party.

He further commented on the desperation of his foes by stating that they may even come after his life. He therefore vowed to his supporters that when they pray, they must pray for him also to remain alive.

Amaechi complained for not getting fair hearing from NWC committee. He further rejected the allegations of suspending Obio/ Akpor Council Executive and not reinstating him afterwards as he claimed to not even suspend him in the first place.

He was of the view that The Rivers State House of Assembly had the power to suspend Obio/ Akpor Council Executive, whereas The State Assembly has authority to investigate the case.

Crystal Palace back to Premier League

  • Africcon News
Africcon Media Report: Crystal Palace back to Premier League
    Africcon New Media – News

    From: Africcon Media – Nigeria

Never have the lyrics of Crystal Palace's long-standing terrace anthem felt so apt. Sixties classic "Glad All Over" blared out of the Wembley address system as Martin Atkinson blew for the final whistle; Crystal Palace had become a Premier League club again.
zahaSixteen years after leaving Watford and with three previous play-off final heartbreaks behind him, there could have been no-one in the Palace playing ranks more glad than their match-winner. At the tender age of 39, Kevin Phillips vanquished his former club to surely earn himself one more crack at the big time. Just as Arjen Robben erased his personal jinx in the Champions League final at Wembley on Saturday night, so Phillips finally put the pain of defeats with Sunderland, West Brom and Blackpool to bed with an extra-time spot-kick of unerring cool.

"What a wonderful story," Palace boss Ian Holloway, a loser alongside Phillips with Blackpool in last season's play-off final, commented after the game. "Kevin Phillips hasn't won one…When I first came here, maybe I was the opposite of what they needed to take over. I don't think I got everything right. We had a terrible spell but it ain't over 'til it is over. Two or three weeks ago, we were going to get walloped when we went to Brighton [in the semi-final]. We end up in the Premier League which is unbelievable." And with Phillips' contract at Blackpool up this summer, Holloway made it quite clear where he wants his loan super-sub to be playing next year, adding: "I will keep signing him until he is nearly 50 or 60 if he keeps putting the ball in the net."

zahaThe result was an underlining of Palace's penchant for the play-offs. Four-time winners, they claimed a third 1-0 victory in as many finals, Phillips taking his place alongside Neil Shipperley (2004) and David Hopkin (1997) in the Selhurst Park pantheon and taking the club back to the big time for the first time since 2005.

Wembley had hosted the battle for club football's most prestigious prize two days earlier, but on this sunny afternoon in North-West London it was the sport's most profitable prize up for grabs. Appropriately coming on England's Bank Holiday Monday, Palace's promotion to the Premier League secured a boost to their coffers that is expected to total £120 million.

How sweet it must feel for all those involved with Palace. For fans and employees who watched them plunge into the nadir of bankruptcy in 2010, the ownership of quartet Jeremy Hosking, Martin Long, Steve Parish and Stephen Browett has seen the club rise like an Eagle from the flames. Sitting on a neighbouring desk in the press box, the Palace communications' team embraced and cheered as passionately as the supporters who surrounded them. The prospect of organising trips to Old Trafford and Emirates Stadium is unquestionably more appealing than that of Bournemouth's Dean Court and Yeovil's Huish Park.

Palace's promotion has been achieved against a penurious backdrop. Reliant on their much-admired academy, Wilfried Zaha and Jonathan Williams may have been the only alumni to start at Wembley, but the likes of Sean Scannell, Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Moses also deserve a mention for playing a role in rebuilding the club on the pitch following the narrow avoidance of the financial abyss three years ago. Zaha joins those former Eagles in flying the nest this summer but his final contributions in a Palace shirt provided a platform that may give the club more hope of holding onto its talented youngsters in the future.

zahaThe two-goal hero of the play-off semi-final win against rivals Brighton, Zaha took centre stage again at Wembley. More Nani than Cristiano Ronaldo at present, the Englishman's rawness - manifested in a lack of end product at times - may frustrate some at Old Trafford next season but his direct running and nimble feet should allow for some leniency from the Manchester United faithful. Brought down for the penalty, he was rewarded for his persistence, providing what Hollway described as "a little moment of genius" deep into extra-time.

"I think he [Zaha] has been the difference," Watford manager Gianfranco Zola reflected. "In games like this when it has been very balanced and very tense, what makes the difference is the individuality of the player. He creates the penalty from nothing. I never questioned the abilities of Zaha, never, he has got a lot of ability. Now he has a big task because he is going to play for the champions. I am sure he will learn. He can go very far because the boy has got a lot of talent."

Zaha and Palace will have no long goodbye as a reunion awaits next season. But if the £15 million they received for him in January looked good business, it will never compare to the decision to keep him until the end of the season. Promotion to the Premier League: £120 million. Feeling Glad All Over in the Wembley sunshine: Priceless.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Wilfried Zaha. Had he not been on the losing team, Manuel Almunia would have been a deserving recipient after proving Aaron Wilbraham's personal nemesis. But it is United new boy Zaha who really caught the eye. Yes, he often looked raw, with moments of skill not complemented by quality end product. But his was a spark that was still evident when winning the penalty in extra-time, with Watford right-back Marco Cassetti likely to be having nightmares until his plane touches down back in Udine this summer.

CRYSTAL PALACE VERDICT: The better team on the day, building on the momentum that the shock 2-0 semi-final win at Brighton gave them. There were times that desperate defending was needed, Damien Delaney proving the master of the last-ditch tackle on several occasions. But with Zaha giving their attack some zest, Palace carved out the best openings after a forgettable first half. Still, this current squad will not survive the rigours of the Premier League. Holloway must be given money to spend and strengthen or an immediate return to the second tier awaits.

WATFORD VERDICT: The last few weeks have been an exhilarating ride for Watford fans, robbed of automatic promotion on the final day of the season before the late drama of the victory over Leicester in the play-off semi-finals. Ultimately it is disappointment them, after Zola's side failed to turn up at Wembley. Their glamorous, continental contingent are the antithesis to Palace's homegrown core but were not a match for the South-East Londoners. Uncertainty surrounds the return of the raft of loanees to their parent clubs, but there are many positives to be drawn from the Hornets' season, not least that Zola - one of the most aesthetically pleasing footballers to have graced the Premier League - has proven adept at building a team in his image, capable of producing among the best football in the division.

    Africcon New Media – News

    From: Africcon Media – Nigeria

AtleticoThe Colombian has spent two years at the Vicente Calderon and has enjoyed every minute of his stay in the Spanish capital but refused to confirm his exit

Radamel Falcao said that his stay at Atletico Madrid since joining Porto has been "like a dream".

The Colombia forward is set to complete a €60 million switch to Monaco this summer, having helped the capital club win the Europa League, the European Super Cup and the Copa del Rey in a two-year spell.

Falcao is expected in the Principality this week for a medical ahead of completing the deal.

"I'm very grateful for these two years at Atletico Madrid," the 27-year-old told W Radio.

"I never expected to win three titles in so short time, this has been like a dream. Yesterday I lived a very emotional moment I had never lived before with the fans and a club.

"I will never forget it and I don't know how to give them thanks."

However, Falcao refused to confirm that he would leave the club in the summer: "Right now, I can't talk about my future, there will be time later."

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo also denied a deal for Falcao has been completed: "Falcao is yet Atletico's player. He is going to play a match [against Zaragoza] and after we talk about his future."

Meanwhile, Colombia are set to play Argentina on June 8 as their bid to qualify for the World Cup continues and Falcao is confident his nation can prevail in the clash.

He said: "Colombia have a great team with the capability to play in any field, any time, against any rival but we need to be discreet and think about what can we do against Argentina."

Napoli sign Rafa Benitez

Africcon Media Report:  Napoli sign Rafa Benitez
    Africcon New Media – News

    From: Africcon Media – Nigeria

    rafa
The Spaniard, who recently had a seven-month stint at Chelsea, was unveiled as the new coach of the Partenopei following the club president's message on Twitter

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has announced the signing of former Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez via Twitter.
The former Blues interim manager, who won the Europa League this season, is set to take over from Walter Mazzarri who left the Partenopei to join Inter after coach Andrea Stramaccioni was sacked for a disappointing ninth-placed finish this term.

De Laurentiis revealed through Twitter that he was delighted to land the 53-year-old.

He said: "Rafa Benitez is the new coach of Napoli. A man of great international experience. A leader."

The Spaniard has coached in Italy before, but had a rather unsuccessful spell at Inter lasting just six months in the job after inheriting Jose Mourinho's treble-winning side.

The club released an official statement on their website saying: "Rafa Benitez is the new coach of Napoli. An agreement was signed [on Monday] in London.

"Napoli are happy to welcome a coach so prestigious to our own family. A welcome also to his collaborators."
