NCP, NDM begin merger talks

The National Conscience Party (NCP) and National Democratic Movement (NDM) would on Saturday in Abuja meet for discussions on possible merger ahead of the 2015 general elections.
A statement jointly signed by the NDM national secretary, John Aderogba and the deputy national secretary of NCP, Comrade Adebola Lateef said Nigerians are not impressed with the political situation in the country hence the need to look for parties that would take the mantle of leadership from the People Democratic Party (PDP).

They expressed concern over the level of decadence in the country and the corruption which has eaten deep into the fabric of the polity.
They however advocated for the reformation of the legislative arm of government, the Nigeria Police Force and the judiciary, saying that if these three things are done then the country would move forward.
“Our primary aim is the quality of men and women who represent Nigerians at the states and National Assemblies, we are not and should be projected as a movement with interest in any presidential or governorship candidate at this stage as this will divide our common interest and goal. It is our believe that these reformations will affect and improve the quality of governance in
Nigeria as most of our sociological, political and economical problems is as a result of these weak Institutions,” they said.

The Powerlessness of the Vice-President under the President Goodluck Jonathan ( Describing him as powerless )

Vice President Namadi Sambo’s inability to lead the way in tackling the numerous crises in the North has brought to question his relevance to the region

Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura, a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and later Minister of Environment in the cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo spoke the minds of many northern leaders on the Desmins Independent Television (DITV) in Kaduna last Monday. On the programme, Alhaji Daura lamented the status of Vice President Namadi Sambo under President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as powerless. According to him, apart from the fact that Architect Sambo is not given many powers under the 1999 Constitution, Alhaji Daura remarked that, compared to former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, the current Vice President is in a pathetic situation because governors do not rally around him.
In the interview, Alhaji Zangon Daura had said, “There is nothing he can do, and if God had helped us for governors to be with him, because they are not with him unlike what it was during Atiku’s era, he would have been powerful. But they are not with him today. If they were together, they would have been working together, but we’re certain they are not.”

The powerlessness of the Vice-President is perceived through his inability to take the lead in tackling the many burning issues in the North. In a chat with Sunday Trust, a human rights activist based in Kaduna, Malam Shehu Sani, explained this failure thus: “There are three fundamental problems confronting the area called northern Nigeria. They include abject poverty, pervasive insecurity and illiteracy and ignorance. Whoever wants to be seen as a northern leader must earn his reputation in finding solution to the three problems. A northern leader is not a title bestowed on anyone but is a reputation earned. Vice President Namadi Sambo cannot be called a northern leader as long as these problems continue to persist and further aggravated by the government he is serving. So if Namadi Sambo is representing the northern region, his relevance will be measured in terms of his capabilities to address these problems.”
However, Mallam Sani said he would describe Sambo’s failure in providing leadership in the North in the context of the Constitution and the demand for political loyalty to the president, a vogue in the country’s contemporary political experience. According to him, “In Nigeria’s presidential system, the president is the overall head of government and thus has all the powers; he is the alpha and omega. There is little or no role the vice president can play. The factors put into consideration while appointing a vice president is loyalty. But all a loyalist could give to his boss is his loyalty and that is what Sambo is giving. The blame for not being able to tackle the problems of the North should not be on Sambo only, but should also be shared with northern governors, ministers, senators and members representing the region in the House of Representatives. Sambo’s government has woefully failed in addressing issues challenging our unity and collective progress as a people. Therefore, if Sambo is to be judged, he should be judged in accordance with the achievement of the government he is serving and the government is obviously a total failure.”

One governor who has lamented the predicaments of the north under the current administration is Dr Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State. At the weekend, he described the north as being marginalised in the face of massive outflow of funds into the Niger Delta region, while government failed to do what is appropriate to halt the Boko Haram insurgency that has crippled several northern states. In his statement, Dr Kwankwaso said, “A situation whereby Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is working for a particular region, a Ministry entirely dedicated to serve a particular region and so many resources invested in the SURE-P project are directed towards a particular part of the country is not in the best interest of all Nigerians.”
Though Vice President Sambo has demonstrated his loyalty to his boss, President Jonathan seems to listen to other ministers and aides, who may constitute his kitchen cabinet. They include the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Oduah, Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke, Minister of Niger Delta, Elder Godsday Orubebe, Chief of Staff to the President, Mr Mike Ighiadomhe, and the Special Assistant to the President on Research Documentation and Strategy, Dr Oronto Douglas.
However, the argument is that the vice president has failed to reassert himself in national politics and in so doing he has allowed the president’s men from the Niger Delta to usurp his conventional responsibilities.

Introspectively, the Office of the Vice President could be the most uninteresting or frustrating for any man of vigour and intellect.  An impeccable insider close to the vice president, who also confirmed to Sunday Trust of Sambo’s frustrations, enumerated the VP’s predicaments, saying that Sambo has indeed lost his initial swagger due to some debilitating course of events.
“When you are Number Two, you hardly distinguish yourself and stand out. You can’t claim to have anything to your credit. You can also suffer from the misfortune of liability crisis. If the president is underperforming, it robs off on you, the vice president.
“The vice president cannot have a better image of himself even when coming from the North West which is the most populous geo-political zone in the country. The North West is better than the three other zones in the North. It’s the only zone that has seven states. It’s homogeneous, mainly Muslim and Hausa/Fulani. Namadi Sambo has so far failed to tap fully into the electoral value provided by the North West.
“I don’t think you can also credit Namadi Sambo with charisma. Unfortunately, he comes along as a conservative politician. Politics requires colour. For instance, the late Abubakar Rimi was a colourful politician. He’s colourful, eloquent and had lot of charisma. Rimi was an orator who could move the people to do things, but Namadi Sambo lacks these attributes.

“Otherwise, he’s a humble politician who has been a successful businessman. Basically as a government contractor, it means he knows almost all those who are in power. He knows those who matter and inner workings of government. Given the complexities of Northern politics, it is required that whoever is holding the office of the vice president in the present circumstances should be able to fly the northern flag. He must be reliable and possess sound pedigree.”
Explaining that Sambo may not have been prepared for that exalted position before he was elevated, the insider said, “The vice president has not done many years to learn the ropes. He has not circulated widely within the political space and did not earn the support of the political elite. When he was governor of Kaduna State, that was where he could have built his political pedigree. Unfortunately, he was short changed by his elevation to the position of vice president. Throughout his stay in Kaduna, he has not consolidated his grip in the politics of the state.
“Namadi Sambo needed sometime in Government House, Kaduna, to beat his predecessor Ahmed Makarfi, who spent 8 years as governor, performed well and garnered so much goodwill, before he could venture out to win the confidence of the North,” the source said.
As Nigeria’s fourth elected vice president, Namadi Sambo was initially influential in state matters as he was seen as one of the most powerful men in President Jonathan’s Administration. By statutory regulation or convention, the vice president oversees some governmental agencies and organizations and supervises multi-billion naira projects that are crucial to President Jonathan’s Transformation Agenda.
He chairs the Nigeria Economic Intelligence Council (NEIC), the National Planning Commission (NPC), and National Council on Privatisation (NCP) and supervises the Independent Power Projects as the Alternate-Chairman of the Presidential Action Committee on Power (PACP) and the Nigeria Emergency Management Authority (NEMA). Statutorily, he is a member of the National Security Council, National Defence Council and the vice chair of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).
However, Sambo’s influence in government has ebbed in recent times just as the president’s ever-growing coterie of Ijaw and Niger Delta acolytes have taken over some of his responsibilities with impunity. The unwavering trust and confidence he seems to have enjoyed from the president had eroded.
Reports recently indicated that the crisis of confidence between Sambo and the president has worsened with the vice president having it rough due to suspicion that he may not support the return of Jonathan in 2015.

The National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) which is directly under his purview is now commandeered by Mr. Reynold Dagogo Jack, the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Power. Similarly, at the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), which Sambo heads, things are not really going the vice president’s way especially on matters relating to power reforms. The president, Sunday Trust learnt, has not taken to Sambo’s counsels, but has chosen to listen to only men he trusts.
Furthermore, the Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has encroached into the vice president’s sphere of influence, going by her control of the economic management which renders the Economic Intelligence Council powerless. In addition, when President Jonathan constituted a committee to work on the renovation of the national stadiums in Lagos and Abuja, it was the Finance Minister that was appointed to supervise the project.  Previously, the Vice President used to be in charge of the Sports Commission, and should have been the one to oversee such project.
Amidst all this, the vice president has done well to stay clear from limelight and not to be seen as inordinately ambitious so as not to incur the wrath of his boss. He has equally employed considerable restraint as any smart politician would do amidst the ongoing agitation and speculation in the North on who should succeed Jonathan in 2015. Although he has avoided open identification with the campaign, Sambo’s associates and some PDP chieftains from the North were said to have openly canvassed for support of his alleged presidential project.

ANY PLOT TO REMOVE THE SAMBO?
In recent times, there have been speculations from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that President, sensing that Sambo may not possess the political asset he requires to improve his image in the North, may be thinking of replacing him with some other North-West governors, like Katsina State’s Barrister Ibrahim Shema or Bauchi State’s Malam Isa Yuguda. While working on this story, the Vice President’s aides, including his spokesman Malam Umar Sani, refused to speak to Sunday Trust in spite of our numerous telephone calls through to his mobile line and text messages. However, the body language of the president in this regard is manifest in the apparent disregard for the Vice President in the dual reconciliation project embarked upon by The Presidency.
One of such indication was that the Board of Trustees Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, recently appointed by Jonathan, seemed to have taken the political initiative to personally visit some northern governors who are alleged to be aggrieved and may decamp to the yet to be registered All Progressives Congress (APC). Chief Anenih visited Governor Kwankwaso, Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, and a couple of others in the North. Ordinarily, the Vice President should have engaged in such moves. Apart from Chief Anenih, the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur has toured many states in furtherance of the reconciliation moves.

Though the plot to remove him is still in doubt, Malam Sani believes such measure would not help the North. According to him, “What Nigerians want is that Jonathan should go away by 2015. His government has unleashed hardship on the people. The hopes of the people have been quashed, their dreams shattered by his government. In fact, his government is a threat to national unity, peace and stability. So it is not simply about dropping Namadi Sambo.  We are not demanding for a new VP, but a new government. What we want is that the present Jonathan and Sambo-led government should simply pack their things together with all their characters by 2015 and go. Those who are demanding for a new VP are indirectly giving Jonathan a condition for continuity.
He added that, “ Under Jonathan’s government, Nigerians’ dreams have been extinguished, Nigerians are no more safe in their homes and their places of work or worship; the nation’s unity has been on its lowest ebb; so how can he continue? Jonathan and Namadi should go and rest in the best interest of peace, unity and stability of the country.”

For Dr Abubakar Siddiq of the Department of Political Science, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Vice President Muhammad Namadi Sambo doesn’t have the required capacity and ability to lead the North, not to talk of influencing anything in the region or sway some national policies in favour of the North.
Because the VP is not the President, there is no way he can stop the ongoing crisis in the North. He therefore has little or nothing to do than to follow the wishes of his boss, Dr Siddiq said.
“You know he is not the President. Being a Vice President makes him a subordinate to the President. He cannot therefore do much in stopping the crisis. You cannot compare him with Atiku because people usually differ in their personality, courage and ability. In a nutshell, VP Sambo, is just a Vice President who always wants to follow the wishes of his boss,” Dr Siddiq said.

Norwich City, meanwhile, drew 2-2 with Swansea City at Carrow Road.

Southampton hammered a huge nail into the coffin of their former manager Nigel Adkins, as goals from Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana consigned bottom club Reading to a 2-0 defeat.

Adkins was axed by Saints and replaced by Mauricio Pochettino. It looks like the latter will be in the Premier League next term, while Adkins may now be preparing for life in the second tier.

Rodriguez showed tremendous desire on 34 minutes to get to the ball ahead of Reading keeper Adam Federici to score for a third game in a row. The Royals failed to find a counter and Lallana broke down the middle on 72 minutes and swept the ball confidently beyond Federici.

The win takes Southampton on to 37 points and within touching distance of safety, while Reading remain on 23 points with only six games remaining.

Best Player of the Year: Bale, Suarez or Van Persie?

Best Player of the Year: Bale, Suarez or Van Persie?

Player of the Year contenders Luis Suarez, Gareth Bale and Robin van Persie

With the PFA Players' Player of the Year award due to be handed out this month, ESPN FC run the rule over each of the three main contenders -- Tottenham's Gareth Bale, Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Manchester United's Robin van Persie -- and make a case for each to win the prize.

- Tactics and Analysis: Premier League flops

Luis SuarezLuis Suarez

Kristian Walsh: Disregard, if you can, all the peripheral factors that bedeck Luis Suarez. Forget his velour touch, so mesmerising, hypnotic and downright fun; discount the controversy that courts him like a lovesick teen, rightly or wrongly. The Liverpool forward deserves to win the PFA Player of the Year award simply because there are few outside of his club who think he should.

Skewered logic, granted -- but this is a player who skews all rationality both on and off the pitch.

With the grass beneath his feet, he habitually does the improbable, slaloming through flailing limbs with belligerent glee. But such performances come heavily caveated from all corners with a rancour rarely seen in England before. Venom spits and profanities fly from adult men and women as Suarez is labelled a diver, cheat and things far worse.

Suarez cares little -- there is little point in pretending otherwise. If he did, he would already have left Anfield, his time there a distant, embittered memory.

With such a fierce, combative disposition, he probably cares little about winning the Player of the Year award, either. If he did, the allure would not come from obtaining the respect of his contemporaries -- it would simply be the confirmation that he is better than them all.

He is in a three-way race with Gareth Bale and Robin van Persie -- it is a race he can't win, won't win. He is not as clean-cut as the archangelic Bale, nor does he play for a team as successful as van Persie's. The players who would vote for him are unable to, as they still sit in a darkened room, rocking back and forth, tormented by the Uruguayan.

But Suarez should win. Statistics alone create a compelling argument. His 22 goals in 30 league games -- two hat-tricks included -- have won his side 12 points this season. He has scored a goal every 122 minutes and possesses a conversion rate of nearly one in six.

But to limit his talent to something as regimented as numbers is an injustice. He should not be shackled by the bondage of binary. He is an artist, a player who regards every Premier League stadium as a fresh canvas for him to daub upon. There have been few left untouched this season.

Suarez is not blessed with the efficiency of Bale or van Persie, but what he has is arguably better, for football is a sport that has become far too sanitised in recent times. The biggest flaw in many modern footballers is that they don't have one. Football, for all the machinations and melodrama, is fun -- there are few more fun to watch than Suarez.

He plays as any supporter would. He twists, turns and pirouettes with the ball; he contorts his face into a determined grimace without it, an expression that remains until his side have it once again. This is not just a player who has his heart on his sleeve, but uses his lungs as a waistcoat and his brain as his feet. Everything he possesses remains all over the pitch.

His mind-set is simple: do whatever damage possible in the most magnificent way. Few of his 22 league goals fail to elicit some sort of knowing, nostalgic nod. His goal against Newcastle at Anfield in November -- plucking a ball from obscurity, controlling it on his shoulder and rounding Tim Krul within a second -- is one of the more memorable ones. Words cannot give the goal, with all its skill, ingenuity and willpower, the description it deserves.

Words are not enough for Suarez himself and his performances this season, either. In an era when the cost of football has reached extortion, this is a player worthy of the admission price. That is what matters most to Liverpool, more than any Player of the Year award.

Gareth BaleGareth Bale

Dan Fitch: Why is Gareth Bale the player of the season ahead of Robin van Persie or Luis Suarez? It's all about the journey.

Season after season Bale makes a huge stride forward. He's done so again during this campaign. In contrast, van Persie has arguably taken a step back. He was astonishing at Arsenal last season and started his Manchester United career in the same form.

Had he carried on in 2013 as he did in 2012, then there would be no debate as to whether van Persie should retain his crown. Instead, the goals have dried up, as the Dutchman looks to be tiring. It's unsurprising, having carried Arsenal last season, and then playing in Euro 2012 before joining a new club.

Ahead of van Persie in the goal-scoring charts and my current esteem is Luis Suarez. Unlike RvP, the Liverpool striker has upped his game this season. He's always looked a brilliant player, but it's been this term he's proved that he can cut it as a reliable Premier League goal scorer. Suarez has had a great season, but he's not the best player in the Premier League right now.

That man is Gareth Bale. What impresses me so much about the young Welsh international is how he rises to every challenge.

When people scoff when Bale is compared to Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, there are some things that they should put into context.

Bale's achievements might not be on a par with his La Liga counterparts, but he's had much further to go in his journey to be talked about as one of the world's best.

He hasn't been helped by the great players of Barcelona, Manchester United or Real Madrid. Bale started his career in the Football League with Southampton before joining a then-struggling Tottenham side.

Nor was Bale a wide player playing in a front three, who had the comparatively short journey to a more central position that Messi and Ronaldo enjoyed.

Bale started his career as a left back. Then he became a winger in a 4-4-2 before finally switching to a central position behind the main striker midway through this season. That change came at half-time away at Norwich in a game that Spurs were losing. Bale scored a wonderful individual goal to earn his side a draw.

Since that game Bale has played ten more times and scored ten more goals. Many of those goals have been absolutely vital to Tottenham's eventual result, and nearly all have been spectacular in their execution.

In his central position Bale is absolutely unstoppable. He's far more difficult to mark, and when he gets the ball in space and runs at the defence, he's able to do more damage.

Unlike Messi, Ronaldo and indeed Suarez, Bale's play is pretty simple when you break it down. Fancy footwork and step-overs are rarely seen. Instead Bale relies on pace, close control and stunningly accurate finishing.

Robin van Persie is a great finisher, but can't score unless someone creates the chance for him. Suarez is far more able to create his own opportunities, but even he can't quite live up to Bale's ability to win games single-handedly.

That's why Bale should be the player of the season. He has become a match winner, as important to Spurs as Messi is to Barcelona or Ronaldo is to Real Madrid. A player who, when the chips are down, can grab the game by the scruff of the neck. He turns losses turn into draws and draws into wins.

Bale has won this award before. He became the PFA Player of the Year in 2011, when he first started to show that he could influence games at the highest level. He wasn't the best player in the league at that point, but he is right now. Bale deserves to be given his title back.

Robin van PersieRobin van Persie

Musa Okwonga: He has failed to score for Manchester United in his last nine games. By his standards, he missed a late sitter against Real Madrid in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League that would have given his team a vital second away goal. By his standards, he also missed a late sitter against Chelsea in the FA Cup quarterfinal, a half-volley clearing the bar instead of drawing his team level. Yet, in spite of all those facts, Robin van Persie should still finish as the Player of the Year. The Dutchman, despite the exceptional seasons being enjoyed by Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Tottenham Hotspur's Gareth Bale, deserves this award because he flourished when the domestic battle was at its fiercest.

Whilst Gareth Bale has risen to world-class status with startling speed, it is the Uruguayan who is the strongest rival to van Persie. Like van Persie, he has carried his team's attack and allowed them to make the transition into a far better side. The only thing that counts against Suarez is that his team has not competed for the title; indeed, had he been at Manchester City this season, the league table would certainly look very different.

But these are hypotheticals; in support of van Persie's case, let us state the facts. Van Persie went to face Manchester City at Eastlands, a stadium where his team had failed to register a single shot on target in the equivalent fixture last season, and there, in his first derby, he curled home a last-minute winner, his deflected free-kick spinning clear of Joe Hart. He struck early against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in his team's 3-2 win there early in the season, at a time when the Londoners were still contenders for the championship. He netted a hat-trick away against Southampton, where Chelsea and Manchester City both came unstuck. He scored the opening goal against Liverpool at Old Trafford, helping his team to achieve a rare league double over their most intense rivals; the first half of that double had been sealed by van Persie's 81st-minute penalty at Anfield, which delivered a 2-1 victory. He also found time to score with his first touch against Arsenal in the win at Old Trafford, and to get the first goal of the game against their city rivals Tottenham Hotspur in a 1-1 draw away from home.

Those are just the goals -- 19 of them in 27 Premier League games, not to mention crucial and sublime finishes away at West Ham in the FA Cup and SC Braga in the Champions League. Then there are the assists, with van Persie emerging as his team's leading creative force. He has been both their best number 10 and their best number 9. The last player to do that for Manchester United, to bestride the league with such swagger, grace and decisiveness, was Eric Cantona. Like Cantona, van Persie has restored Manchester United's aura. At many points this year, he has seemed like the character of The Wolf in Pulp Fiction: someone who can be sent in to redeem the most perilous of situations. In latter weeks, perhaps drained by his exceptional efforts, he has resembled Doc Holliday in the closing moments of Tombstone; the exhausted gunslinger, worn down by the pressure of his own continuous brilliance.

Van Persie has certainly flagged since January, having kicked for home very early, but he was so far ahead at one point that he could afford a stumble or two during the final lap. His exertions have helped to put United, in a season when they have come from behind numerous times, clear in the league by the remarkable margin of 15 points. This is why -- despite the sustained magnificence of Luis Suarez at Liverpool -- he must emerge, by a photo finish, as the Player of the Year.

The Head of State said he was ready for retirement and that it was time Kenyans resumed work and stopped politicking.

“Lets work with each other. There’s no need of being jealous of your neighbour. It is foolish to be jealous towards a person who has been congratulated,” President Kibaki said.

The President said he had kept most of the pledges he made to Kenyans including increased tax collection, reform of public institutions and the promulgation of a new Constitution.

Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka said Mr Kenyatta and his deputy, Mr William Ruto, should emulate President Kibaki’s tolerance.

“The time for national healing is now. Let’s get together and move the country together,” he said.

Mr Musyoka, who said Friday’s was one of his last official functions as VP, also hinted he was interested in being the leader of opposition in Parliament if he secures the nomination.

“We stand for a strong opposition for one nation,” Mr Musyoka said.

Speakers praised President Kibaki’s development record such as free primary and day secondary education, infrastructure development and improvement of public servants’ lot.

His administration was also praised for introducing “the ground-breaking performance contracting now replicated elsewhere worldwide”.

President Kibaki said his decade in power was not easy. “We have come a long way and it has not been easy. Indeed, we have encountered many challenges on the way; but through your determination, dedication and hard work, we have been able to live up to the expectations of the Kenyan people.”

    Guinea-Bissau Profile:
The former chief of the navy in Guinea-Bissau has been arrested and is being transferred to the US, local media have reported.
Rear Admiral Jose Americo Bubo Na Tchuto was picked up on a boat in international waters near Cape Verde, a local broadcaster said.
He is described by the US as a kingpin in Guinea-Bissau's huge drugs trade.
The small West African state is a staging post for gangs smuggling cocaine from Latin America to Europe.
According to a report by the broadcaster RTC in Cape Verde - the island state off the west coast of Africa - US officials supported by Cape Verde police arrested Adm Na Tchuto and he is expected to face prosecution in the US.
There has been no official comment from US officials.
Fernando Vaz, a spokesman for Guinea-Bissau's government, confirmed the arrests to the Reuters news agency, saying the rear admiral had been arrested off the coast of Cape Verde in a boat flying the Panama flag.
The Cape Verde islands lie about 1,000km (620 miles) west of Guinea-Bissau.

"They have been widely corrupted by these violent and well-financed drug gangs and Guinea-Bissau is a very small country, its vulnerable, its institutions are weak," Bruce Bagley, an expert on drug-trafficking at the University of Miami, told the BBC's Newsday programme.

"It also has a coastline that's filled with inlets and mangroves and places to hide so it's geographically well positioned," he said.

US officials imposed a travel ban and asset-freeze on Adm Na Tchuto in 2010.

"He was an intermediary and he was paid for his services… he was obviously in a position to look the other way and even to provide protection for these shipments as they were offloaded," Mr Bagley said.

As navy chief he would have also been able to provide protection as the drugs were directed to "European markets through a variety of different routes including private aeroplanes up to and including camel trains across the Sahel and into areas where they could cross the Mediterranean", he added.

The rear admiral was arrested after a failed coup in December 2011, but released in June last year in the wake of a successful putsch.

Last year the UN Security Council warned that renewed political instability was allowing drug-trafficking to flourish in Guinea-Bissau.

The current transitional government, which took over after the military-backed coup in April 2012, does not have full international recognition.

Presidency, PDP blast Tinubu Over Comment Against Jonathan

  • Nigeria: Presidency, PDP blast Tinubu Over Comment Against Jonathan

Presidency, PDP blast Tinubu Over Comment Against JonathanFull Details:
The Presidency, yesterday took on a former Governor of Lagos State and national leader of Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for his recent comment on President Goodluck Jonathan.

Tinubu, on Thursday at a lecture held to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State in Benin City, flayed President Jonathan for reportedly presiding over the establishment of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum as a ballast to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, which cuts across party lines.

He also accused the President of allegedly dividing the Governors just because they took a different position over the Excess Crude Account.

Tinubu said he was ashamed of the President for presiding over the creation of the PDP Governors’ Forum, adding that by his actions, Jonathan was not promoting democracy.

In a swift reaction, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said he was shocked at Tinubu’s utterances.
He said “This statement means Tinubu is not a leader, it means he should not be followed.
“The President is the father of this nation; he represents the sovereignty of the country,”.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement on Friday, questioned the motive of the ACN leader in his comments about the PDPGF.

Metuh described Tinubu’s comments as “contrary to the constitutionally guaranteed freedom of association.”

PDP said, “Since the inception of the current democratic dispensation, Governors have had several groups where they meet to aggregate their common interests. We have Governors of the ACN always meeting.

“We also have groups like the Northern Governors Forum, South East Governors Foum, South South Governors Forum and so on. What is the idea behind Tinubu’s attack on the PDPGF? It goes to show the absence of democratic tenets in him for him to attempt to prevent Nigerian citizens from associating with one another.”

First Lady Returns After Three Weeks Abroad

  • Nigeria: First Lady Returns After Three Weeks Abroad

First Lady Returns After Three Weeks AbroadOur News:
Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, returned to Abuja yesterday after spending about three weeks abroad.

There were reports during the week suggesting that she was flown abroad to an undisclosed German hospital for medical treatment. But this was denied by her spokesman.

The Nigerian Television Authority reported the arrival of Mrs. Jonathan at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, aboard a presidential jet in company with her children and close aides.
The wife of the Vice President, Hajia Amina Sambo, and some female ministers received her at the presidential wing of the airport.

Unconfirmed reports had it that the First Lady’s health might have relapsed, thereby necessitating her going abroad to receive fresh medical attention.
But her media office had explained that her visit to the hospital was routine and had nothing to do with new health challenges.

The First Lady's media aide, Ayo Osinlu stated that his principal had a history of constant visit to the hospital abroad as far back as when her husband was the governor of Bayelsa State.

    Osinlu insisted that Mrs.
Jonathan travelled abroad this time to attend to her aged aunt receiving medical attention and her children who are on vacation.
He said there was nothing wrong with regular medical check-ups, which are recommended regime for a healthy life for any individual.

    "It is notable that Mrs.
Jonathan has a history of visiting the hospital in Germany even before she became the first lady, thus making her medical trips routine," Osinlu said.

He also added that: "It is also instructive to state that medical experts have recommended that every human being should undergo medical check-up every six months, even if not suffering ill health.

"Therefore, hospital visitations of our leaders should not become leading media issues or attract disrespectful comments."

The statement noted that the first lady had been out of the country for about two weeks and that most of that time, she was on official trips that took her through Dubai, Paris to Italy and Germany, where she decided to attend to her personal affairs of looking after her foster-mother and children.

Osinlu said she participated "in the first Green Women Conference, which took place in Paris on March 17, where she received the 2013 Global Women Leaders’ Award for Peace.

"She thereafter proceeded to Italy from where she went to Germany to see her mother, Mama Sisi, who is currently receiving medical attention,” pointing out that, she "is spending sometime overseeing the management of her mother’s condition.

"She is also using the opportunity to spend quality time with her holidaying children before they return to school, as they are with her to see their grandmother."

He lamented that: "It is unfortunate that again, some media houses have allowed themselves to be used by dedicated mischief makers against the basic tenet of professional journalism, which regards truth as sacred."

Wilfried Bony for the Premier League move

Football Africa: Wilfried Bony ready for the Premier League move

No matter where the money lies, where the best competition is or how much things have changed, a footballer is still considered to have really made it when he plays in the English Premier League. Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony is not far from making that move.

Currently at Vitesse in the Dutch Eredivisie, Bony tops the league's goalscorers list. He has netted 27 times in 25 matches and has caught the attention of many in London. It seems likely he will join West Ham -- he even went as far as saying it is "certainly a possibility" -- but there has also been interested from Chelsea.

In an endorsement that confirms his value and ability, Bony had praise and goodwill lavished on him by fellow Ivorian and London resident Gervinho. The Arsenal man is not at all surprised in the interest Bony is generating and predicted great things for his countryman.

“Wilfried is hot at the moment. He is confident both at club and national team. He has shown his talent and he is consistent. I can say he is currently one of the best centre forwards in Europe,” Gervinho said. “I can see why he’s pulling interest from a number of top sides. Wilfried knows how to hit goals and he nets them even with the smallest chances. I wish he lands a deal with a great club in the summer.”

A move seems certain, even though Bony signed a contract extension that should keep him in Arnhem for two more years. But will it be the right one? Should Bony choose a marquee club like Chelsea or a smaller one? Will he have the choice at all or will they pick him? The UK is not kind to all who visit its shores and some of Africa’s footballers have found that out the hard way.

Angola’s Manucho is one such example. After impressing Alex Ferguson during a trial, he was signed by Manchester United. Problems in securing a work permit saw him loaned out to Panathinaikos immediately, and when he returned, there was no space for him at Old Trafford. Again, he was sent away and Hull City had his services for a while.

In the space of two years, he went from being on the brink of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world to being deemed surplus to requirements. His move to Spain also resulted in brief loan spells but he has since established himself at Real Valladolid.

Egypt’s Hossam Mido is another forward who could not crack it in the English Premiership. A promising youngster at Zamalek, he went on a European tour of sorts, playing in Belguim, Holland, Spain, France and Italy before being loaned out to Spurs. They were impressed with him and he was happy there, but by the time he joined permanently competition for places was high and the marriage was an unhappy one.

After stints and Middelsborough and Wigan, he returned home but had one last dalliance with England when he played for West Ham. He did not score once for them and they did not offer him a permanent contract. Most recently, he was released from championship side Barnsley.

Both Manucho and Mido found themselves struggling to make enough of an impact to be guaranteed a place in the starting XI. Maybe they should have done bigger things in the lead-up to the English encounters or maybe it was just bad luck.

It's tough to know because amidst the tales of caution, are the ones of celebration. Demba Ba and Shola Amoebi are among the more recent ones. Yaya Toure is one of the more enduring ones. So is Gervinho himself, and he may serve as the biggest lesson to Bony as he makes his decision.

Gervinho did the hard yards before moving to England. He played in Belgium and France, where he had great success at Lille. He was the driving force behind their success in 2010-11 when they won the league for the first time in 56 years. That was his second and final season there, after which he joined Arsenal.

Vitesse are currently third in the league, three points behind Ajax with six rounds to go. They have never won the Eredivisie, but Bony’s form could change that. Should they manage that, it would place Bony in almost parallel position to the one Gervinho was in when he made the move to the UK. It would make him the main man in a winning campaign, who has paid his dues and earned success.

That is, of course, not the only recipe for readiness in the Premiership. There are many tales of players who have done it many other ways. But it is one of the routes, and if it turns out to Bony’s, he could at least have the pillars in place to set him up for the ride.
