Four Thailand nationals & two Nigerians were kidnapped Friday morning on their way to work on the fish farm (an Israeli company.)

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

By AfricCon Blog
- Four Thailand nationals & two Nigerians were kidnapped Friday morning in Buguma, the headquarters of Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

They were abducted by armed men while on their way to work on the fish farm, managed by Omida Farms, an Israeli company.

“The hoodlums took six of the workers, including two Nigerians; but they decided to drop the two Nigerians among their victims, probably in a bid to prevent being easily traced. Unfortunately, one of them drowned. And other one managed to swim to safety.”

State Commissioner for Agriculture, Emmanuel Chindah, told journalists on Friday that six employees of the fish farm were kidnapped by the hoodlums, two of whom are Nigerians; but that the kidnappers decided to release the two Nigerians midway into their operation. One of the two Nigerian workers, in an attempt to escape, jumped into the water and drowned.

Chindah lamented the situation and blamed it on the laxity of security in the state.  He said the matter had been reported to the police, but noted that the breakdown of security in the area and the entire state due to the sense of boldness the police in the state has recently conferred on criminals, who were hitherto in hiding.

“We have reported the matter to the police, but what must be emphasised is that these hoodlums feel emboldened to do this because they believe the police are now their friends. You will remember when so-called militants protested on the streets of Port Harcourt in support of Mbu. Now they have the idea that they have the police on their side and that they can resume crimes without consequences. Buguma had been calm before now, you can see that the situation is gradually degenerating into something sad,” Chindah said.

He further said that the kidnappers had not reached out to anybody since the incident occurred.

The RiversPolice Command on Friday confirmed the abduction of four expatriates and two Nigerians in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of the state.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Angela Agabe, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Port Harcourt that the police received the report of the incident in Buguma but details were sketchy.

Arsenal 3 Manchester City 1: Wenger seals win... but scoreline flatters solid Gunners

- Top Gunners: Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey were two of Arsenal's scorers in their friendly win....

Three goals might suggest that Arsenal can do without Luis Suarez but this victory in Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium was far less emphatic than the scoreline indicates.

Arsene Wenger will know as much as he continues his pursuit of the unhappy Liverpool forward with Arsenal still confident of landing Suarez after failing with an opening bid of £40 Million.

At least the Gunners showed that they are in decent shape going into the new campaign, despite flattering to deceive at times against Manchester City in what was a final pre-season friendly for both teams.

Luis Suarez must apologise to team-mates before we welcome him back, into the Anfield fold

- Luis Suarez has been ordered to apologise to his Liverpool team-mates before he is welcomed back into the Anfield fold.

The Uruguayan was forced to train on his own after claiming the club had broken a promise to sell him to a Champions League club this summer.

But manager Brendan Rodgers has repeatedly insisted his star striker will remain with the club despite Arsenal making an offer of £40,000,001, a sum they believed was enough to trigger a clause in his contract.

'Initially there will be an apology to his team-mates and the club, then a recognition that he is ready to fight for the club,' said Rodgers after his side had lost to Celtic in their final pre-season friendly.

'I know that we are not seeing the Luis Suarez I know. He has spent some days working on his own. When he comes back from Uruguay we will see how it goes further.

We are all on the same page. He won't be going to Arsenal, that's for sure. When Luis is committed to the cause, we will welcome him back with open arms.

'I was made aware at the end of last season that a number of clubs would come in. The reality is that one have done.'

FG will hands over PHCN to new investors Sept 21 - Read More

By AfricCon Blog
- The Federal Government will hand over privatized successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, to private investors on September 21, 2013, if the investors pay on schedule.

The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, PBE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, disclosed this in an interview in Abuja.

He disclosed that the PHCN privatization was expected to earn the Federal Government about $2 billion.

Dikki said: “To purchase this Power Holding Company, over $2 billion will be paid by the bidders, and that is because the investors can see a clear investment horizon. They don’t have to go and lobby anybody, all they require is to meet the technical requirement, go to the regulatory authority, apply for licence and they are limited by their own ingenuity and their access to the capital.

“When they pay by September 21, we will hand over the companies to them or anybody who pays earlier and then they begin to operate.

“Labour issues have been resolved and the implementation committee on settlement of the PHCN staff terminal benefits commenced payment of N118 billion to the over 20,000 PHCN staff, at the beginning of this month”.

The BPE boss said the privatization programme of the Federal Government had significantly opened up the Nigerian economy by creating the right atmosphere for greater private sector participation in several key sectors.

He said the telecommunications sector stood out in terms of attracting massive foreign investment, which he put at about $40 billion to date.

His words: “The Nigerian economy is becoming more and more liberalised. So, we in the Bureau of Public Entreprise are not surprised. That is what we have been working for.

“That is the benefit of the reform, which the Bureau of Public Entreprise has been spearheading and also in consonance with the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration”.

“What this transformation agenda is doing is to create an enabling environment for the private sector investment in the country and that has given rise to reform activities in various sectors.

He assured that everything would be done to ensure that the fleeing hoodlums were arrested and thoroughly investigated.

“Sokoto is peaceful but unfortunately insurgents from other parts of the country are fast making it a safe haven and we are battle-ready to dislodge them.

“The operation by the army will be sustained and intensified just like our sister security organizations are also doing theirs nationwide.

“I cannot however confirm any fatalities as at now. But scores of arrests have been made and details will be made available later,’’ he said.

Musa commended residents for their support and cooperation and appealed to them to sustain the tempo.

Musa said that the task of ensuring security of lives and property of Nigerians was a collective one.  (NAN)

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

First Lady Patience Jonathan yesterday urged Nigerians, especially  Muslims to intensify prayers for the unity, peace and progress of the nation.

In her Sallah message signed by her Director of Information, Mrs. A. O. Adesugba, Mrs Jonathan who felicitated with Muslims in the country on the completion of the Ramadan fasting and the celebration of Eid-el Fitri, enjoined them “to use the occasion of the Sallah celebrations to renew their commitment by being good ambassadors of their religion by their deed and speech.”

She further urged them to continually uphold the injunctions and sacred teachings of the Holy Prophet Mohammed by demonstrating the virtues of peace, tolerance, compassion and charity towards one another”, she added.

The statement made available to Afric-tv24 Friday reads in part: “Dame Patience, who is also the President of the African First Ladies Peace Mission, noted that women have an important role to play in their communities as the vanguards of promoting peace and social harmony.

She advised Nigerians to teach their children the significance of prayer and the importance of humility, integrity and peaceful coexistence.  She asks all Nigerians to join hands and work collectively in order to build a strong nation of our dreams.

Royal Fathers On Eid-el-Fitr

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

Eid-el-Fitr, variously called the Festival of Breaking of the Fast, Feast of Breaking the Fast, Sugar Feast, Bayram (Bajram), Sweet Festival, the Lesser Eid and Sallah, is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of (compulsory) fasting.

Fasting, one of the five pillars of Islam, falls in the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar during which Muslims are expected to observe a strict fast and participate in pious activities such as charitable giving and peace-making. It is a time of intense spiritual renewal for those who observe it.

Before the day of Eid, during the last few days of Ramadan, each Muslim family gives a determined amount as a donation to the poor. This donation is of actual food – rice, corn, millet, wheat, guinea corn, etc. – to ensure that the needy can have a holiday meal and participate in the celebration. This donation is known as sadaqah al-fitr (charity of fast-breaking).

After the Eid prayer, Muslims usually scatter to visit various families and friends, give gifts and host people to eat, drink and have fun through picnicking, visiting parks, gardens, zoos, museums, etc.

The unity, camaraderie and bonding the fasting period usually engenders among Muslims, Christians and people of different tribes through breaking the fast together extends to the sallah celebration days, as visits and gifts continue between the people.

In all these, the Emirs (anglicised Amir [Leader]) play a great role in uniting the different people in their domains, maintaining peace, law and order and leading by example. Therefore, after the prayers, the Emirs host people paying homage, doling out gifts and speaking to their people on their expectations so as to have better communities.

Even though the security challenges being faced in the north have robbed the Sallah of some of its splendour, Emirs nonetheless share messages of love:

Sultan harps on fear of God

The Sultan of Sokoto and president-general, Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, in his Eid-el-Kabir sermon, yesterday, tasked leaders of both religions in the country to preach with the fear of God.

The Sultan, who noted that a majority of clerics now place selfish interests even above that of the Almighty Allah whom they claim to be serving and their followers, also warned that inciting preaching is not healthy for any nation.

While commending the effort of the federal government in striving towards ensuring lasting peace in the country, the Sultan said he was optimistic that the committee constituted by the federal government on insurgency would achieve favourable result with time.

According to him, “Preachers of both faiths should fear Allah and live above their own selfish interests while preaching to their followers. They should avoid provocative statements that could lead to the breach of peace that is capable of breeding violence in the country”. He further pleaded with both faithful Christians and Muslims to stop interfering in the affairs of one another.

On the lingering security and other avoidable challenges confronting the nation, the Sultan also called on leaders at all levels to fear Allah and not betray the trust placed on their shoulders while leading their subjects.

“The precarious situation of the nation is only due to bad governance and neglect of divine injunctions. Most of the leaders are busy amassing wealth and forgetting their subjects that they are meant to serve,” he said.

Cheering News From Borno

With gradual return of peace to Borno  State, the traditional Sallah Durbar (horse parade) was held  for the first time since 2009 amidst fanfare at the Shehu’s palace yesterday in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Governor Kashim Shettima was in attendance as special guest of honour and it was the first time a sallah durbar was held since he became Governor of Borno state in May, 2011.

The peaceful and colourful durbar took place soon after the Eid prayers which were conducted at Ramat square, some two kilometers away from the Shehu’s palace in Maiduguri. It was held following emergence of relative peace in the State owing to security operations and activities of youth volunteers nicknamed ‘civilian JTF’ who have been haunting boko haram insurgents in Maiduguri and other parts of the state.

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Garbai El kanemi had suspended the traditional sallah durbar since 2009 for fear of insurgency attacks. The first major boko haram crisis took place in July, 2009 leading to the deaths of hundreds of persons, amongst them insurgents, security agents and innocent citizens.

Emir of Katsina harps on peaceful co-existence

Emir of Katsina HRH Abdulmumini Kabir Usman tasked residents on peaceful coexistence even as he urged Nigerians to pray for an end to insurgency.

Addressing the Muslim faithful in Katsina, yesterday, on the occasion of the Sallah celebration, the Emir said no efforts should be spared in ensuring peaceful coexistence.

“We must support every effort geared towards ensuring peace. Although Katsina is peaceful, we should not fold our arms and relax; let us ensure sustained prayers for more peace here and in places having challenges,” he said.

The Emir equally made a case for tree planting so as to combat the menace of desertification and directed district, village and ward heads to mobilise people for the tree-planting exercise.

Mixed emotions in Kano

In Kano, the Sallah was celebrated amidst mixed emotions. For the first time in his 50-year reign, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, LLD, JP, missed the Eid prayer and Sallah cultural durbar. It was officially announced that he was abroad for medical attention following his age-related deteriorating health condition.

The senior counsellor in the Kano emirate, Wambai of Kano Alhaji Abbas Sanusi, represented the emir at the Eid prayer (Eid-el-fitr) held at regular Kofar Mata Eid ground.

Millions of Muslim faithful across the state attended the Eid prayers at various Eid grounds in the city of Kano and the neighbourhood, amidst tight security of armed police, military men among other security agents in mufti and paramilitary outfits.

The Emir, who spoke through the Wambai, shared the great moment of Eid-el-Fitr with the people of Kano and prayed for continuous peace to reign in the state and the country, prosperity, good health and a bumper harvest in this year’s rainy period.

A yearly event, Eid-el-fitr is culturally celebrated: the Emir and his horse-riding entourage comprising his children, royalists and kingmakers went round major city roads to receive homage from his subjects who usually gathered along the streets.

The Wambai announced: “The Emir of Kano has directed me to inform the general public that this year’s cultural durbar is cancelled and for the district heads to stay back at their various local government areas and observe possible cultural functions.”

He added: “On Saturday each and every traditional title holder should be at Emir’s palace; together we proceed to the Government House, Kano, to pay the only traditional function of raising to the spirits of the Kano governor.”

In Yobe, an olive branch to insurgents
In Yobe, a state at the receiving end of the Boko Haram insurgency, the chairman of the Council of Chiefs, the Emir of Fika, HRH Dr Muhammadu Ibn Abali Muhammadu Idrissa, appealed to the insurgents to cease fire and come forward for dialogue. He made the plea in his Sallah message in Potiskum.

He advised parents to monitor the behaviour of their children in order for them to shun bad companies.

According to him, “dialogue, as everybody says, is the best way to get room for peace as the federal government has been talking about dialogue... With dialogue, I think, we would build up peace in Yobe State and the country”. He went further: “I would like to call on youths who mostly take part in what is going on to eschew violence, tread the path of peace, for without peace there will be no development...I also call on government to come up with policies that will bring an end to youth restiveness; when the youths have nothing to do, they will take the path of violence and destruction, so we advise government to come up with vocational training and also create more jobs for the youths and more educational facilities.”

In Ilorin, another call for peace

The Emir of Ilorin, HRH Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari yesterday in his Sallah message enjoined Nigerian Muslims to sustain the peace and tranquillity that reigned during the just concluded Ramadan.

After observing the two raka’ah prayers to mark the end of the Muslims’ fast at Ilorin Eid praying ground, he said that the nation needs peace and stability to progress.

Addressing the congregation, the Emir of Ilorin prayed for peace in his domain, Kwara and Nigeria as a whole.

He thanked the security agents in the state for their unrelenting efforts at ensuring that peace reigns supreme in the state at all times.

The frontline monarch also called for unity among Nigerian politicians, so that the nation’s hard-earned democracy would not be truncated.

Etsu Nupe seek constitutional role for traditional rulers

The Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, in his Sallah address to his people yesterday in Bida, said that his people should be tolerant and accommodate people of other religion even as the Royal Father advocated a constitutional role for traditional rulers as a way of curbing insecurity in the county.

Emir of Gwandu calls for continuous prayer for peace

The Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Iliyasu Bashar has enjoined Muslims in the country to intensify prayers for Allah to continue to unite and shower peace in Nigeria.

The Emir made the call shortly after the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer in Birnin Kebbi at the Fakon Idi Praying Ground yesterday, attended by the Kebbi State Acting Governor, Alh. Ibrahim Khalid Aliyu, the Minister for Special Duties, Alh. Kabiru Turaki (SAN), Commissioners and thousands of Muslims.

The Gwandu Monarch who is also the Kebbi State Chairman, Council of Chiefs, thanked God for his benevolence to Nigeria in spite of the security challenges facing the country, urging Muslims to intensify their prayers for peace even after the Ramadan fasting.

“I want to thank God for this period and urge all Muslims to intensify prayers for peace and unity of Nigeria even after the Ramadan fast and people should continue to be good to one another’’, the Emir said.

He also lamented about the moral decadence in the society and the negative character of our children who engage in immoral acts such as drug abuse, calling for change of attitude and parents to be vigilant about the movement of their wards.

He further enjoined people to give security operatives in the country maximum support in their effort to tackle insecurity and report any suspicious character in their midst.

Emir of Zazzau on retaining Ramadan lessons

The Chairman, Kaduna State council of Chiefs, the Emir of Zazzau, HRH, Alhaji Shehu Idris charged Muslims to sustain the lessons of Ramadan to guarantee prevailing peace in the country. He made the call in his Sallah message marking this year’s Eid-ul-Fitr celebration held in his palace.

“Ramadan teaches us patience, perseverance, love, assistance to the needy, trust, honesty and above all the fear of God The Emir called on his subjects to promote peace at all levels, saying that no society would witness meaningful development in an atmosphere of rancho, acrimony and loyalty to breach of peace. He warned them against rumour peddling and any acts detrimental to the present peace being experienced in the state.

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to all and sundry to give necessary cooperation to security agencies in their bid to curtail the rate of crime in our society.

“Let me commend the efforts of Ulamas, who conducted the Ramadan Tafsir peacefully without using abusive words against one another,” he noted.

The Emir advised the people to be cautious of accommodating visitors they did not know until they conduct proper investigation on them. Idris advised parents to do everything possible to ensure proper upbringing of their children.

Liverpool winger Sterling in court after being arrested and spending night in jail over allegations of assaulting a woman

Raheem Sterling will appear at the city's magistrates court on Friday to answer the charge of assault after he was arrested at 10.30pm on Thursday in Page Moss.

It reads: 'Common assault and battery shall be summary offences and a person guilty of either of them shall be liable to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both.'

Sterling enjoyed a breakthrough for Brendan Rodgers' side in 2012, but tailed off as the season progressed as he adapted to the rigors of top flight football.

Speaking last month about the challenges he has faced, the 18-year-old, who was born in Jamaica and raised in London, said he was ready to put the dip behind him and push on.

'I didn’t think so at the time, but the break I had probably did me good,' he told the Liverpool Echo. 'You want to play as many games as you can but mentally as well as physically I probably needed a rest.

'At the time there were a few things going on off the field. That time I spent out means I’m raring to go for the new season.

'Now it’s up to me. I need to kick-on and prove I really did deserve those call-ups; that it wasn’t just a fluke. I have a lot to prove this season.'

We Can’t Run A Corrupt Police Force — IGP

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

The Nigeria Police Force has commenced the implementation of a sting operation, laced with deceptive action designed to arrest and prosecute its officers and men committing acts of corruption.

The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, who dropped this hint while fielding questions from State House correspondents after the Sallah homage at President Goodluck Jonathan’s residence, said it was high time the force weeded out corruption within its ranks.

Abubakar was reacting to the recent dismissal of a police sergeant, Chris Omeleze, who was caught on video camera soliciting a bribe of N25,000 from a motorist over a traffic offence in Lagos.

The IGP said, “You can see that we are IT compliant. We know what is happening in the YouTube; we know what is happening all over the world. And because we believe that we have to do what is right, we warn our officers and men. Sometimes we set them up to ensure that we get them on the act. And so whoever is caught in the act is dismissed.”

Noting that he will “not run a corrupt police service”, IGP Abubakar said it was not true that the dismissal of the police sergeant was harsh because the police was ready to prosecute the officer as long as the man he tried to extort money from was willing to testify.

On the call for the redeployment of Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mbu, Abubakar said that the police would not be dragged into politics, rather it would concentrate on carrying out its professional duty.

He said, “The situation (in Rivers) is okay. We are not politicians. We cannot be brought into the politics of this country. Professional police officers are supposed to do what they are supposed to do to protect lives and properties and that is why we remain where we are and we charge the commissioner of police to be a professional police officer providing safety and security for the good people and development of Rivers State”.

On adequate funding for the police, the IGP noted that good times were ahead for the force because President Goodluck Jonathan was passionate about the welfare of the officers and men of the police.

Assuring Nigerians of police continued effort in ensuring a crime-free society, Abubakar thanked Nigerians and the media for their cooperation in tackling criminality which, he said, had ensured relative peace in the country.

He added that the force would continue to do its utmost and collaborate with its partner agencies to rein in crime in the country, while creating a higher level of awareness for Nigerians to be conscious of their security.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Arrested a Bricklayer Suspect

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a bricklayer suspected to be working for a drug cartel for ingesting 83wraps of substances weighing 2.065kgs that tested positive for cocaine.

The suspect, Ugankwo Basil Chukwudi, 46, was nabbed at the Lagos airport while returning from Brazil.

NDLEA Airport commander, Hamza Umar, who said that the suspect was apprehended after testing positive for drug ingestion, disclosed that it was one of the highest quantities of drugs ingested at a time by a suspect this year.

Umar said: “He was detected with the help of scanning machines during the screening of passengers on an Asky airline flight. The case is under investigation,” Hamza stated.

In his statement, Ugankwo said that he regretted his involvement in drug trafficking.

According to him: “What is more painful to me is the fact that I was lured into selling our family land to travel abroad in search of job opportunities. I am a bricklayer at Alor village, Anambra State. I got to Brazil on July 10, 2013 and all attempts for me to get job was unsuccessful. That was when they sold the idea of drug trafficking to me. Initially I

objected but when there was no other option, I succumbed. They made me swallow 83 wraps of cocaine which was detected by NDLEA officers,”

Investigation revealed that drug barons now have agents who move from village to village in search of drug mules who they promise, among others,  better job opportunities abroad.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the Agency Ahmadu Giade, in his Salah message, urged members of the public to always turn down requests to smuggle drugs.

“Drug trafficking always leads to shame. It is important to consider the shame of arrest, the pain of imprisonment and the risk of premature death when approached by drug barons.

The preferred option is to shun drug trafficking and live a drug-free lifestyle,” Giade explained.

The NDLEA boss noted that drug barons were desperate to use anybody and members of the public must be weary of their antics. The suspect is married with four children and hails from Anambra State. He will soon be charged to court.

His Not Right For The Police To Arrest And detain Suppoters of Governor Rotimi Amaechi - Mr. Ogbonna Nwuke

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

The lawmaker representing Etche/Omuma Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, Mr. Ogbonna Nwuke, has condemned the arrest and detention of suppoters of Governor Rotimi Amaechi in the Peoples Democratic Party in his constituency.

In a statement made available to journalists in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Nwuke accused the police of bias in the political crisis in the state, recalling that anti-Amaechi groups had been attacking the governor without being arrested by the police.

The lawmaker argued that the police were expected to live above board by being neutral in the crisis rocking the state.

He said, “I condemn the arbitrary arrests and detention of my constituents. People should be allowed to express their minds. It is against the tenets of our democracy. The anti-Amaechi leaders and groups are attacking the governor and the Rivers State Government on a daily basis.

“Nobody has touched them (anti-Amaechi groups). So, why should they arrest persons in my constituency, who are only expressing their minds and political affiliation? This is a clear case of intimidation and victimisation.”

Leader of Concerned People of Omuma, Mr. Darlington Nwanju, told journalists in Port Harcourt that the people of Omuma believed in  the rule of law and the tenets of democracy in the current political dispensation to redress matters affecting aggrieved parties in any form of disputes.

Nwanju expressed displeasure at the arrest, intimidation and harassment of two Omuma citizens, Mr. Leo Anyanwu and Charles Ahamefule, by the police.

He condenmed the act of harassment and intimidation of the PDP members by a member of the state House of Assembly, Mr. Kelechi Nwogu.

Responding, Nwogu, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Mr. Chidi Nweke, alleged that Anyanwu and Ahamefule, who were executive members of the Godspower Ake-led PDP, had gone on air to announce his suspension from the party, adding that they (Anyanwu and Ahamefule) had no right to engage in such act.

Nwogu, who represents Omuma constituency in the state House of Assembly, said rather than take the law into his hands, he decided to report the matter to the police.

Winifred Okey Set Ablaze By Her Ex-boyfriend

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

When in November 2012, Winifred Okey, received a call-up letter to begin her National Youth Service Corps programme in Rivers State, she was extremely happy.
This was because she wanted to be posted there so that she would be close to her friends, who were staying there.

The 23-year-old graduate’s happiness was however cut short after she was set ablaze at the corper’s lodge in Asari Toru Local Government by her ex-boyfriend.

It was learnt that Winifred, a graduate of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, was in her room in company with her roommate when her ex-boyfriend set their room ablaze.

Our correspondent, who spoke to members of her family in Lagos, learnt that the incident occurred on July 19, 2013.

A member of the family, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “Winifred was the first child of the family. She has a younger sister, Ruth. We were all in Lagos when we received a call from NYSC that Winifred was in a critical condition so her parents travelled to Rivers State immediately.

“We learnt that her former boyfriend in the university, went to her room at night, emptied a keg of petrol on the door and set the building on fire. Other residents rushed to the scene and were able to rescue Winifred and her roommate, but Winifred had been badly burnt.

“They were rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.”

It was learnt that Winifred’s parents stayed with her at the hospital till July 31, 2013, when the graduate of Home Economics died due to the burns she had sustained.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the State Criminal Investigation Department immediately swung into action and began investigations into the matter. It was learnt that the police arrested the culprit, who had burns on  his hands.

When our correspondent asked Winifred’s family why the suspect committed the act, they said they did not know as they had never met him before.

A cousin of the deceased said, “Winifred and the guy met in school, but the guy lives in Port Harcourt while we live in Lagos. The incident is still a shock to us.”

Friends of the deceased, however, said the ex-lover had been sending threat messages to her for leaving him. They were not, however, able to state, the cause of their estrangement.

Winifred was said to have been dating someone else, which did not go down well with the suspect.

Winifred’s father, Mr. Okey Okey, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, said his daughter’s death was a shock. He, however, said he could not speak at length because he was having a family meeting over the incident.

The state command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Angela Agabe, could not be reached as her phone rang out while a text message sent to her phone was not replied to.

However, the Public Relations Officer, NYSC, Rivers State, Mrs. Violet Apollo, described the incident as “very sad.”

She added that the NYSC would ensure that that the matter was followed to a logical conclusion.

How Officials of the Facility Treat Labanese And Prisoners Protested

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

AfricCon Report - Friday From Afric-tv24

Protest broke out at the Kuje Prisons near Abuja   on Thursday over alleged preferential treatment of three Lebanese inmates by officials of the  facility.

The protest took place just as the  Defence Headquarters said that over 1,000 suspected members of the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram,  were   in  detention facilities in the country.

The Lebanese prisoners – Mustapha Fawaz, Abdallah Thahani and Talal Ahmed Rodo – believed to be  members of an  international terrorist group, Hezbollah,  were said to have been allowed to use a particular area of the prison ground for the Eid-fitri prayers while other inmates,  including Boko Haram suspects,  were restricted to another place.

The Lebanese  are standing trial  at a Federal High Court, Abuja, for terrorism and illegal importation of firearms.

The protesting inmates   destroyed some amenities, including water pipes,  electric cables and cell windows.

A source told one of  our correspondents that the angry inmates also splashed water on some of the prison officials  who ran  for their  safety.

A Boko Haram inmate serving a  life sentence was said to have  fainted during the melee.

Our  source said, “The tension was brought under control by the Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Operations, Mr. Segun Bewaji,  who attended  to  the convict that fainted.  But the inmates in the single cells were restive and refused to be pacified by the DCG.”

The  Lebanese suspects were moved to the prison on August 2, 2013 based on an application by their lawyer, Ahmed Raji(SAN), who claimed that  they were no longer comfortable in the custody of the State Security Service.

The court had granted the application and the suspects were promptly transferred to Kuje Prisons.

When contacted, the Prisons Public Relations Officer, Ope Fatinikun, claimed  that the protest  had nothing to do with the Lebanese inmates.

He added that it was caused by two groups struggling to use a particular place for the Eid-fitri worship.

“I don’t want to give anybody names, but the incident was caused by two groups (of inmates) who wanted to use a particular place for their  prayers;  but the situation has been brought under control. We talked to them and they  saw  reason with us, “he said.

Also on Thursday, the Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Chris Olukolade said at a news conference   in Abuja that  “ over 1,000 of the Boko Haram insurgents  were arrested  in the process of engagement with weapons in their hands and they are being detained.”

He also said that some of the members of the sect had  been killed in action.

He was   silent on the casualty figure on the side of the Military Joint Task Force  since  emergency rule  was declared in  Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

Olukolade,  who justified the  state of emergency  in the three states, said the gains of the  operations  would be clear when viewed against the backdrop  of the security situation in the  states before the exercise.

He  stated that no part of the country was under the control of the insurgents contrary to the situation that prompted  President Goodluck Jonathan to declare emergency rule in the affected states.

The Defence spokesman said that  a  large quantity of arms and ammunition  as well as raw materials for the production of Improvised Explosive Devices were  recovered from the arrested inurgents.

He  added that the drastic reduction in   bombings outside Borno, Yobe and Adamawa  was a clear reflection of the rate of success of the ongoing security operations in the  three states.

Olukolade said that  the few incidents and the attack on soft targets were  meant to send a  message   that the insurgents were still around.

He said, “The level of success is predicated on the President’s directive to stop the incident. The rate of bombings outside the three states has reduced in drastic terms. You may still see skirmishes; but   those are isolated cases  to announce that they are still around.

“Before, these people  took over government facilities and  converted them to their use. Today, we can report that that has been completely reversed;  there is no part of this country where terrorists have freedom of action.

“The special forces have also recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition from them in the Sambisa forest where they had their biggest operational base.”

Meanwhile, the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of the Security Challenges in the North has  said it will  intensify discussions with  the Boko Haram Sect.

The Chairman of the committee and Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki (SAN),  gave the assurance in his Sallah message  on Thursday in Abuja.

He said in a statement by his Special Assistant on Media,  Mr. Okey Muogbo,   that   more insurgents were expected to accept the dialogue option.

Turaki said,  “The business of ensuring that we have a more peaceful and secure society is our collective responsibility  and I pray that God will guide and assist us in this Herculean task which my committee has been charged to bring to a successful end.”

According to him,   members of  the amnesty committee  are aware of the enormous challenges in the dialogue process. He added that as patriotic Nigerians, “we  are fully committed to discharging the duty of ensuring that peace returns  to the North and by extension,  to the whole country.”

He urged  insurgent group  members   who had not yet accepted dialogue to use the occasion of the Sallah to “irrevocably accept the dialogue option offered by the Federal Government and come to the negotiating table to air their grievances and discuss a peaceful end to the crisis in the North.”

“The search for a permanent solution to the security challenges in the North requires the efforts and commitment of all Nigerians”, Turaki stated.
