- Late Treble Rescues Arsenal
Africcon Report: Late treble rescues Arsenal
Africcon Media Sport – FootballArsenal scored three times in the final ten minutes to maintain their pursuit of Champions League football as they leapt to third in the table on Saturday, while Everton also maintained their charge towards European football.
Elsewhere, Reading look increasingly likely to join Rangers in the Championship next season despite a draw with Liverpool, and Aston Villa remain concerned after they were held by Fulham.
Arsenal made it seven wins from their last eight league outings with a 3-1 triumph over Norwich at Emirates Stadium, lifting them above Chelsea and Tottenham. Goals from Mikel Arteta, Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski did the damage for Arsene Wenger's men, who trailed to Michael Turner's opener until the 85th minute.
Norwich will still fear the prospect of being dragged into the bottom three after defeat left them four points clear of 18th-placed Wigan - having played two extra matches.
Olivier Giroud came closest to breaking the deadlock for Arsenal in the opening half-hour, glancing Bacary Sagna's cross across goal and shaving the woodwork. The returning Jack Wilshere looked slightly rusty in the middle of the Arsenal midfield, but Santi Cazorla was on the ball frequently as another chance came and went for Giroud before half-time.
However, the game changed in the 56th minute when Turner was afforded a free header from a Robert Snodgrass free-kick, burying his effort into the bottom corner. Arsenal's response was initially poor, barely fashioning a chance in the next 20 minutes, but a tugged shirt allowed Arteta to net a penalty in the 85th minute before Giroud bundled the ball home to give them the lead, and Podolski then made things safe.
Everton's dream of Champions League football remains a realistic prospect after a 2-0 win at home to QPR moved them within three points of fourth-placed Tottenham. David Moyes' men have played the extra game, but strikes from Darron Gibson and Victor Anichebe intensified the pressure.
Defeat for QPR leaves them seven points from safety with five games to play, and the breakthrough goal came laced with misfortune as Gibson's drive deflected past Julio Cesar from Clint Hill.
However, it was hard to argue that Everton did not deserve their lead, and they battered away at the QPR defence in the second half. A second arrived when Anichebe flicked home a set-piece, and the Toffees could have added more by the final whistle.
Reading are in the same position as QPR, on 24 points, after they drew 0-0 with Liverpool at the Madejski Stadium. Liverpool's outside hopes of securing European football for next season are surely now over after Reading 'keeper Alex McCarthy had a stormer.
Liverpool were first to threaten, Luis Suarez dinking the ball over the home goalkeeper, but Chris Gunter was there to head off the line. Suarez then played Daniel Sturridge behind the defence, but his first touch allowed Reading to get bodies in the way of the eventual shot.
The visitors continued to dominate, with Suarez and Steven Gerrard both denied before McCarthy made a world-class point-blank save to deny Sturridge. The pattern continued after the break, with Philippe Coutinho's classy back-heeled finish ruled out for offside after Gerrard's cross.
Noel Hunt had Reading's best chance when Pepe Reina produced a stunning block with his feet, and the Liverpool 'keeper needed to be sharp again to tip over from Jobi McAnuff. Liverpool were still the dominant force, though, and McCarthy produced two more world class saves to deny Gerrard and Suarez in the dying minutes.
Aston Villa only managed to put three points between themselves and the bottom three - having played two extra games - after a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Villa Park. Charles N'Zogbia handed Paul Lambert's side the lead on home soil but a Fabian Delph own goal pegged them back.
N'Zogbia was only in the team due to the enforced absence of Gabriel Agbonlahor, but he produced a special finish early in the second period to hand Villa the lead. It lasted only 11 minutes though as Delph found his own net at a corner, silencing a nervy Villa crowd.
Elsewhere, Southampton and West Ham failed to leapfrog Fulham into the top half, drawing 1-1 at St Mary's. Gaston Ramirez's goal pushed Saints ahead but Andy Carroll pegged them back.

Africcon Report: Beckham - Messi better than Ronaldo
Africcon Media Sport – FootballLionel Messi and David Beckham shake hands during the first leg of their Champions League meeting
Paris Saint-Germain star David Beckham believes Lionel Messi is the best player in the world - ahead of his former Manchester United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.
Barcelona star Messi and Ronaldo have been dominating the Spanish goalscoring charts over the past few seasons, and have been billed as the two best players of their generation. However, Beckham feels one stands head and shoulders above the rest.
"They have similarities in their technical skills and talent, and it is amazing for football to have them both present, but Messi is simply the best player in the world," Beckham told Argentine news agency Telam.
"He [Messi] is alone in his class as a player, it is impossible that there is another like him. He, like Cristiano Ronaldo, who is not at his level, are both above the rest."
The former England captain won the Champions League in 1999 with Manchester United, and joined PSG at the end of January after five years with LA Galaxy in the MLS. He also played for Ronaldo's club, Real Madrid.
Messi came off the bench to help Barca fight back for a 1-1 draw with PSG on Wednesday and reach the Champions League semi-finals for a sixth year in a row, where they have been drawn against Bayern Munich, with rivals Real Madrid set to face Borussia Dortmund in the other last-four encounter.
"We were leading before Messi came on, and once he came on, Barcelona scored," Beckham said. "Although I enjoy playing at this level at my age, I do not like to lose.
"Our team played well. In both matches we did things we should be proud of. We didn't lose against Barcelona, and that is something that should motivate us for next season."
Barcelona advanced on the away goals rule following a 2-2 draw in Paris in the first leg, with the contest finishing 3-3 on aggregate.
Messi, who had injured his hamstring a week earlier, was cleared to play only an hour before kick-off. He came off the bench in the 62nd minute with Barcelona losing 1-0 after Javier Pastore's opener, and the Argentinian took just nine minutes to start the decisive move that Pedro finished off to keep Barcelona in the hunt for their fourth Champions League title in eight seasons.

Africcon Report: Nigeria slip in FIFA rankings
Africcon New Media – NewsNigeria dropped one place in the FIFA rankings released on Thursday, staying at 31st but remained the fourth best in Africa.
The team, which moved up 22 places up to the 30th immediately after winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in February, failed to make an upward movement in the latest rankings no thanks to their 1-1 result against the Harambee Stars of Kenya in a World Cup qualifier last month.
Ivory Coast, which fell to Nigeria at the quarter-finals of the AFCON, were rated best in Africa with their 1,008 points ahead of Ghana, who were second, and Mali, who were third.
Algeria (35), Tunisia (41), Zambia (45) and Burkina Faso (50) lined up behind Nigeria in Africa’s top ten. But the interesting part of the continent’s top ten is the presence of Equatorial Guinea and Cameroon in completing the lot.
Equatorial Guinea moved up 45 places to 59th, while the former African champions are 60th after moving up 19 places.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the world rankings is not the continuous hold on the number one spot by Spain but the fall of Brazil to their lowest ranking ever. The five-time world champions dropped one place to 19th due to a lack of competitive matches.
Brazil, who won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, were ranked as the best team in the world as recently as May 2010, but are now below Greece (13th), Switzerland (15th) and Belgium (16th).
FIFA said a total of 120 Grade A international matches were taken into account for the April edition of the rankings, the majority of them qualification matches for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He noted that malaria occurred and killed more people in poor rural communities of the country, saying that poverty and sickness were related.
Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, expressed his administration’s determination to eradicate malaria in the state.
He promised that the state would collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Health, ECOWAS and foreign organisations to eliminate the disease.
He explained that his administration would get rid of malaria before 2015 by reducing the scourge to a manageable level.
Amaechi said, “We must invest in biolarvicides; we must go with the Federal Ministry of Health, the ECOWAS Commission and the Cubans to invest in the biolarvicides.
“We must also invest in indoor spraying. Since we have the target of 2015, we must ensure that by the end of next year, we will either eradicate malaria or reduce it to its barest.
“We have achieved two things in the construction of the biolarvicide factory; first it is commercial. So, we get back our money. We will get the other states to buy from us. We need ECOWAS to bring their part of the money.
“This is serious for me, so you have me on board. I’ve already spoken with the Minister of Health, to talk with the National Coordinator of Malaria Control Programme. I want to see the cost.”
President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Kadre Quedraogo, pledged the commission’s commitment to eradicating malaria in the ECOWAS region.
Explaining that ECOWAS exists to unite the peoples of West Africa and ensure peace and eradication of poverty, Quedraogo noted that such objectives would not be achieved with the presence of malaria scourge in West African.
He said, “How can we achieve these objectives if we do not overcome serious scourges like malaria, which is a very great challenge for our member states?”
“I just want to assure you of the commitment of the ECOWAS Heads of State and Government to eradicate malaria in the ECOWAS region. They are regularly informed of the progress we are making on this effort.
“Let me express my sincere gratitude to the governor not only for his warm hospitality, but also for his support for this priority programme of ECOWAS member states.”
Also, Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, expressed the need for joint efforts and environmental cleanliness to tackle malaria.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, described malaria as a serious public health challenge, promising that Rivers will partner with various stakeholders to eliminate malaria.

Africcon Report: ANPP adopts merger committee report, plans for convention
Africcon New Media – NewsNational Executive Committee of the All Nigeria Peoples Party on Thursday adopted its merger Committee report presented by former Kano State Governor Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau.
The decision was closely followed by the constitution of a 23-member convention planning committee to be chaired by the Zamfara State Governor, Abdullaziz Yari.
This was contained in a communiquรฉ signed by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Emma Eneukwu, at the end of the party’s NEC meeting in Abuja.
Other decisions reached at the meeting included the expulsion of a member of the party, who wrote the Independent National Electoral Commission to dissociate the party from the proposed merger with other parties to form the All Progressives Congress.
The NEC has accepted the merger report presented by Shekarau.
It read, “The All Nigeria Peoples Party has expelled Mallam Isah Bala, the Bwari Area Council ANPP member, who alleged that ACN is hijacking the merger of oppositions while advising the party to pull out of the APC, for contravening party rules and regulations as stipulated in ARTICLE 24; 1, SUB-SECTION 1 and 2 of the 2006 Constitution, reviewed edition.
“This was one of the resolutions of the National Executive Committee of the ANPP which met today at the party’s national secretariat; the NEC adopted the recommendation of the National Working Committee to suspend and expel the errant member, Mallam Bala. Other items on the communiquรฉ from the NEC are as follows:
“The ANPP NEC has approved and adopted the establishment of its special/Diaspora branches in USA, Togo, Benin Republic, and Ghana.
“The ANPP NEC has adopted the recommendations of National Working Committee and replaced Chief John Oyegun, who resigned as the Deputy National Chairman, South, with Mr. Solomon Edevbiri of Edo State as the new Deputy National Chairman, South.”
Earlier, National Chairman of the party, Dr. Ogbonaya Onu, in an address, described the day as historic because Nigerians were waiting to hear whether the party was willing to join other progressives to form a bigger, stronger political party.
Onu said, “The merger we seek with other opposition political parties is for the sake of our country.
“I believe the ANPP should be part of efforts made by committed democrats and resolute patriots to provide Nigerians with a broad, strong and a united alternative political Party that can return power to our people and redefine the role of politics in our development process.”

Africcon Report: Patience makes first public appearance after medical trip
Africcon New Media – NewsWife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, on Thursday made her first public appearance since she returned to the country on Friday allegedly from a medical trip to Germany.
She joined her husband and top government officials to receive the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland, Mr. Donald Tusk, and his wife, Malgorzata, at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Tusk is on a two-day visit to the country.
Mrs. Jonathan, who looked radiant throughout the brief ceremony, dressed in a yellow, purple and brown gown (boubou) with a purple head tie to match.
While Tusk was inspecting the guard of honour mounted by men of the Presidential Guards Brigade, Mrs. Jonathan engaged the wife of the Polish leader in discussions.
The two women retired into the President’s office with their spouses after the ceremony.
About 30 minutes later, Mrs. Jonathan again came out with her Polish counterpart.
After seeing the guest off to her car, the President’s wife returned into the President’s office from where she left for her residence.
While returning to the office, Mrs. Jonathan amid a radiant smile, acknowledged greetings from journalists by waving at them.
Since she returned to the country on Friday, Mrs. Jonathan has not been sighted in public.
She was absent at the third Presidential Breakfast Prayer at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa on Saturday.
The event had in attendance members of the diplomatic corps, some governors, ministers, traditional rulers and members of the clergy among others.
One of her aides, who pleaded anonymity, had told our correspondent that she did not attend the event because she was resting after the rigours of the long trip.
Mrs. Jonathan was also absent at the last Sunday service at the Aso Villa Chapel.
While away, there was widespread speculation that she was again flown abroad to attend to her alleged failing health.
The Presidency however issued a statement debunking the claim.
Her media aide, Ayo Osinlu, in the statement, said she was abroad to attend to her ailing mother, Mama Sisi and to spend “quality time” with her children who were holidaying.

Africcon Report: Boko Haram bent on Islamising Nigeria –CAN
Africcon New Media – NewsThe Christian Association of Nigeria on Thursday flayed Boko Haram’s rejection of amnesty by the Federal Government, saying it was a further indication that the militant Islamic sect was bent on Islamising the country.
CAN, through its President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, therefore challenged northern leaders seeking amnesty for Boko Haram members to bring Sheik Ibrahim Shekau to a dialogue table with the government.
Shekau, who is the sect’s leader, had in a recorded audio message in Hausa, said it was ironical that the Federal Government was contemplating amnesty for Boko Haram members, who according to him, had not done anything wrong by waging a war against the nation.
He was quoted by the Agence France Presse as saying, “Surprisingly, the Nigerian government is talking about granting amnesty. What wrong have we done? On the contrary, it is we that should grant you (Federal Government) (a) pardon.”
But Oritsejafor, who in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, reiterated his opposition to amnesty for the sect members, said he was not surprised by the development.
He said, “The menace of Boko Haram is primarily a religious issue. They believe they have a mandate from Allah to Islamise Nigeria. When I talk like this, it’s not because I hate Muslims.
“In fact, those who say they are good Muslim leaders should be worried because Boko Haram members are the people who give Islam a bad name.”
Stating that Boko Haram is based on ideology, he added, “They (Boko Haram members) do not see anything good in what government is saying. I am therefore not surprised at what Shekau just said.
“In my opinion, he is even a more principled man than most of these Boko Haram members because most of them are just jumping on the bandwagon and thinking that by saying this, Nigerians will see them as people who love Nigeria, but it’s not true.
“We have said it before, to whom do government want to give amnesty? Where is the prison and where are the people? I understand Shekau said it’s Boko Haram that should give the Federal Government amnesty. So, where do we go from here?”
Oritsejafor said rather than pursuing amnesty for the group, the Federal Government should concentrate on the victims of its violence.
“The government should find ways to stop people from being killed and they should find ways to compensate the people and do something to help the widows and orphans. As we speak, the killing is still going on every day in Borno, Yobe and some other states in the North.”
Advising that “people should stop comparing Boko Haram with Niger Delta militants,” the cleric noted that the late President Umaru Yar’ Adua did not go to the Niger Delta to look for the “boys.”
“He (Yar’Adua) gave President Goodluck Jonathan who was then his deputy an order to go to the creeks. He (Jonathan) was able to identify the boys and they were taken to Yar’ Adua. So these Northern elders should look for Shekau and his people and negotiate with them .”
He recalled that Yar’ Adua gave the militants months to drop their arms and ammunition and embrace amnesty.
In separate interviews also on Thursday, the Pan-Northern socio-political organisation, the Arewa Consultative Forum, and the Northern Elders Forum advised the Federal Government to formally make an offer to the sect members.
The advice by the two groups was however opposed by the Coalition of Concerned Northern Politicians and Academics and Businessmen as well as the Civil Rights Congress which said the rejection of amnesty did not surprise them.
The ACF, through its National Publicity Secretary , Mr. Anthony Sani, said, “Let the amnesty be offered first and those agreeable to it accept before we know how to handle those that refuse it.
“This is because amnesty is a mechanism put in place to assure the safety of members of the sect should they agree to dialogue.”
To the NEF, the rejection of the plan was a sign that dialogue had started between the Federal Government and Boko Haram.
“We are very glad. If there is a reaction from the group in terms of what government has pronounced, even though it has not given details of its pronouncement to us that is the beginning of dialogue; at least dialogue through the medium that you are providing,” spokesperson for the NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, said in an interview with one of our correspondents.
He added, “People can exchange views through newspapers at the beginning that could eventually lead them to face each other person to person. Really we will look at it positively and if nothing, our efforts have so far led to this exchange between the group and the government. I think we should look at it on the positive side.
“If we look at it on the negative side, we will not be promoting the eventual dialogue and understanding that we are looking for.”
The group recalled that when Yar’Adua granted amnesty for Niger Delta militants, he gave them a six- month period to accept the offer.
It therefore advised the Federal Government to give the sect a time frame within which to accept the offer.
The elders forum added that it was wrong for the government to have said that the sect was faceless since about 5, 000 of its members were currently in detention.
“We can’t say these people are faceless. Many of them are present because there are about 5, 000 of them in detention and you are the ones reporting that commander so and so have been arrested,” he said.
But the Executive Secretary of CRC, Mallam Shehu Sani, insisted that the amnesty plan was a charade.
In a telephone interview with one of our correspondents, Sani said, “In the first place, the whole idea of the amnesty is centered on the disbursement of money and the group has never made any financial request or demand and has never given any financial condition for anything.
“So by rejecting the amnesty, they are simply rejecting what they perceive as a charade and an attempt to use them to defraud the state.
“It is very clear that the northern elite are in fact in support of the amnesty and the proposal which they have shown the President contains nothing but ideas on how money could be spent on the issue of amnesty but the insurgent group now came out to reject the whole idea simply because it is dubious.”
Also, the Convener of CCNPAB, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, said, “What they (Boko Haram) said was actually the truth. Firstly, they had not negotiated with the Federal Government and so the question of who is giving who amnesty becomes confused. You have at least some measure of guilt before you accept to benefit from and subsequently accept being forgiven. That is what amnesty is all about.
An Ibadan- based cleric and founder of the C&S Success Gate Inc, Akure, Primate Ademisokun Turton, said the rejection of the proposed amnesty was a confirmation that a powerful political class in Northern Nigeria was sponsoring the group.
“I am not surprised that the Boko Haram has rejected the amnesty plan . It is now clear that their agitation is political. What they want is either Nigeria breaks up or they rule it,” Turton said.
Also on Thursday, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar El-kanemi, said that amnesty for Boko Haram members would restore peace and the economic fortunes of the North.
El-kanemi stated this while briefing journalists at the opening of the 2nd Borgu International Gani-Durbar Festival in New Bussa, Niger State.
According to him, the people of the North are optimistic that the amnesty will bring an end to the violence in the North.
He said, “We are happy that the President has deemed it appropriate to set up a committee to work out the modalities for the process. You know we have been talking about the amnesty for long. We came out with the suggestion before. But we are happy that the Federal Government has agreed with our proposal.
“We are happy that a committee had been set up and we are waiting for the Federal Government. We understand that in a few weeks, the report will be submitted.’’
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has said it is not favourably disposed to joining issues with Boko Haram over its rejection of amnesty.
A competent top government official, who disclosed this said the thinking in government circle was that it was not right to engage the sect in a media war.
“We have seen the report. We are not going to engage the sect in the media. We will just wait patiently and see how it plays out,” he said.

Africcon Report: Amaechi denies plan to dump PDP
Africcon New Media – NewsRivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi on Thursday denied reports that he had threatened to dump the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2015 elections, saying he had no plan to leave the party currently in the throes of internal crisis.
Amaechi said this at the end of a meeting he had with Vice-President Namadi Sambo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
A newspaper (not The PUNCH) reported on Wednesday that the governor had concluded plans to leave the PDP along with three unnamed South-East governors.
But Amaechi told journalists at the Villa that it would be foolhardy to dump the PDP because it remained the only national party in the country.
He said, “I am still in the PDP. I am a member of the PDP. PDP is the only national party in the country for now. Why will one want to leave a national party and go to another party?”
Amaechi has for some time been having a running battle with the leadership of the PDP over his leadership style as Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum. The party’s top hierarchy and some loyalists of President Goodluck Jonathan felt that Amaechi was not spending his term as NGF chairman to attract maximum benefits to the PDP and the Jonathan administration.
Few weeks back and on the eve of the NGF’s election in Abuja, the Presidency and PDP National Working Committee rallied loyal governors at the Villa to form the PDP Governors’ Forum and installed the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, as the chairman with a view to weakening Amaechi’s influence.
Justifying the attempt at breaking the Rivers State governor’s influence, Special Adviser to the President on Political Affairs, Ahmed Gulak, had accused Amaechi of running the NGF like a trade union.
Meanwhile, sources confided in The PUNCH that the Presidency had directed that Amaechi must be stopped from leaving the PDP “in order not to ruin the 2015 political game.”
It was also learnt that the Sambo-Amaechi meeting in the Villa on Thursday was to further feel the purse of the governor and persuade him not to rock the boat for Jonathan.
Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, was also said to have during his recent peace meeting to Rivers State begged the governor not to leave the party.
While denying that he was making plans to leave the PDP, Amaechi also described as “mere mischief” the news reports that he had acquired four aircraft to run his own campaign for the 2015 race.
He explained that his administration in Rivers got approval from relevant government agencies to procure a helicopter for aerial surveillance of the state in order to improve on security.
He said, “The truth is that, and the Federal Government is aware, they gave us approval to buy a helicopter to fly around Rivers State for the purpose of security and we have done that, we bought and we paid.
“Up till now, they have not allowed the helicopter to come in. Maybe they are afraid that it is for 2015. Please help us beg them on behalf of Rivers State that we need the aircraft to be able to secure the people of the state.
“Again, it is not within our control. It is in the control of the Nigerian Air Force. Although we will hire a civilian pilot but Nigerian security will manage it, not us.
“How will you use what is in the hands of Nigerian security to campaign? You see the mischief? The helicopter is to ensure that Rivers State is under watch for 24 hours. It has cameras, so if somebody is committing a crime, we are seeing it.
“The monitors are in the office of the Brigade Commander, office of the state director of SSS, office of the governor, office of the commissioner of police. So for Christ’s sake, tell me how you will use it for campaign.
“You can see a lot of mischief. As usual, people will try to dent your image to show that this man is not as transparent as he claims after all. We have argued about the first aircraft we bought, that is no longer a story. We did not buy two jets.”

Africcon Report: Uruguay back Suarez over FIFA probe
Africcon Media Sport – Football
Suarez is no stranger to controversy for either club or countryLuis Suarez is "persecuted" by football's authorities, according to the Uruguayan Football Association, as FIFA launches an investigation into claims he punched an opponent during an international match.
A probe has been launched into allegations that the striker hit Chile defender Gonzalo Jara during a World Cup qualifier in March.
The incident during the 2-0 win for Chile in Santiago was missed by Argentine referee Nestor Pitana, allowing the world governing body's disciplinary committee to act. The AUF has until April 17 to respond to FIFA.
AUF president Sebastian Bauza gave Suarez his backing, claiming that Nottingham Forest player Jara had provoked him by grabbing his genitals, and that the Liverpool forward is regularly treated unfairly by football's authorities.
"Suarez is being persecuted by different football leagues, mainly the English, and we think this is unjust because it's a normal action in football," Bauza was quoted as saying on South American governing body CONMEBOL's website.
"We will defend him very strongly. We are working with all the videos and pictures showing Suarez reacted to an initial aggression from Jara."
Suarez is no stranger to controversy. He was sent off for his infamous handball on the line in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup which stopped a certain goal for Ghana, who then lost the subsequent penalty shootout. While at Ajax he received a lengthy ban for biting an opponent's ear, while last season he was suspended for eight matches for directing racist language at Manchester United captain Patrice Evra.
The 26-year-old received his second booking of the campaign in the match against Chile for an unrelated incident, ruling him out of Uruguay's next qualifier, away to Venezuela on June 11.
Uruguay are currently sixth in the table, just outside the qualification places.

Africcon Report: Wenger blasts UCL refereeing
Africcon Media Sport – FootballArsenal manager Arsene Wenger has described some of the refereeing in this season's Champions League as "disastrous" and welcomed the news that goal-line technology will be introduced in the Premier League next season.
Arsene Wenger has voiced disgust at some recent Champions League refereeing
Wenger, who saw the Gunners knocked out of Europe's elite competition by semi-finalists Bayern Munich, was unequivocal in his condemnation of key decisions in some recent big games.
As he reflected on Borussia Dortmund's contentious victory against Malaga on Tuesday, the Arsenal manager said: "When you look at the level of the referee that we have seen in Europe this week, it is absolutely disastrous what happened.
"The major decisions that have gone wrong in the Champions League... football cannot accept that.
"Honestly, the refereeing has been very poor in the Champions League. I don't know why. You analyse all the teams in the semi-finals, how they have gone through, there have many, many decisions that have been wrong.
"In Dortmund, when you have four players who are offside and no one sees it, how can that happen? Then another player is offside and he scores a goal and we have to stand here and defend it. It's absolutely not acceptable.
"I would like at least to see in a major decision like that, to decide who goes to the semi-finals of the Champions League, for the referee to have an opportunity to see whether a goal is valid or not.
"This is just to do with justice. The more assistance the referees get, the better."
Wenger has long campaigned for TV replays to be introduced in a bid to resolve contentious decisions, and believes the confirmation that Hawk-Eye technology will be used in the Premier League next season should signal a change in direction by UEFA.
European football's governing body remains firmly opposed to any form of technology being introduced in the Champions League, and Wenger dismissed the suggestion that the additional officials employed behind the goal in Champions League and Europa League game provided an answer.
"If [goal-line technology] works in the Premier League, and I don't think it can fail, it will put pressure on UEFA," he said. "The technology can help the officials, so we have to use it.
"Controversy is not good for football. What is good for football is the right decisions. We all accept if we lose to a better team, but it is frustrating to lose when you know it is just down to the decision of the referee.
"You can argue it [technology] slows the game down, but I don't believe it will do that if it is done in a good way. If it is to get more decisions right, we all have to fight for it."

Africcon Report: Chelsea to face Basel
Africcon Media Sport – Football
Chelsea have been drawn to face Basel in the Europa League semi-final draw.
Rafa Benitez's side will travel to Switzerland for the first leg. Basel, Tottenham's conquerors on penalties in the quarter-finals, will face a Blues side who secured their path to the final four with a 5-4 aggregate win over Russian side Rubin Kazan.
In the other semi-final Fenerbahce will play Benfica for a place in the final. The ties will be played on April 25 and May 2.
The draw, held at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, also decided that the winners of Fenerbahce and Benfica will be classed as the home team in next month's final.
Chelsea secretary David Barnard said the club was happy with the prospect of facing Basel, but insisted that they won't underestimate their opponents.
"Before the draw was made we probably would have hoped for Basel over Benfica or Fenerbahce but then they have just put out our colleagues from the Premier League, Tottenham, and also they were responsible last season for Manchester United not getting through their group stage so it is going to be a tough game," he said.
"We've got the players. We've been there, we've been in six semi-finals of the Champions League and two finals so that will probably be a big factor."
Barnard also noted the possibility of Chelsea holding both the Champions League and Europa League trophies at the same time.
"If we play in the final of the Europa League final we will still be holders of the Champions League so we could be holders of both trophies at the same time," he said.

Africcon Report: Real, Barca kept apart in UCL semis
Africcon Media Sport – Football
There was relief all-round in Spain as La Liga's big two were kept apart at Friday morning's Champions League draw in Nyon, with Barcelona drawn against Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid to face Borussia Dortmund, in two mouth-watering Spanish v German semi-final ties.
• Delaney on semi-final draw
• Tomas: Barca must not fear Bayern
Bayern were the first team drawn, with Barcelona following them out of the pot setting up a first leg in Munich in two weeks' time with the return game at the Camp Nou a week later.
Barca's game against Bayern, who will be coached from next season by former Barca boss Josep Guardiola, would be a clash of footballing styles, predicted Barcelona's football sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.
"I believe this is a great tie, all the four teams are great teams," Zubizarreta said. "They are a great team, a great club. We will try and play our football, it will be a mix of styles. I hope we get back to playing the way we like, and to make it to [Wembley], a place which is magical for us."
Bayern winger Arjen Robben believes that the two-legged tie will be decided by the "little details" but is confident enough in his side's ability that they could overcome any of the teams left in the competition.
"I think that is a super draw, a nice challenge for us," Robben said. "The four best teams in Europe right now are in the semi-finals and we can survive all of them. It will be deciding to get a good result at home and defend without any mistakes in Barcelona. This tie will be decided by those little details."
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer added that the key to progression for the Bundesliga champions could be keeping Lionel Messi quiet, especially in the second leg.
"That's a cracker! It could have been the final," Neuer said. "Two fantastic games are ahead of us and the fans are looking forward to them big time. Barcelona has an outstanding team, and have been at top both at the international and the domestic level over the past years.
"Of course, we need to keep an eye on the amazing Messi, the best player in the world should not blossom like he did in the return legs against Milan or PSG."
Ex-Madrid striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy then paired Madrid with Dortmund, with Jose Mourinho's side having the second game at home at their Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. The sides met at this stage in 1997/98, when then holders Dortmund were eliminated by Madrid, who went on to win their seventh European Cup that season, with current Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes then Blancos coach.
Madrid's director of institutional relations Emilio Butragueno said he hoped his team would improve on their group meetings earlier this season, when Dortmund won 2-1 at home and drew 2-2 at the Bernabeu.
"We have played them twice already this season and were not able to beat them," Butragueno said. "But we believe this time around we will be able to do it, and make it to Wembley."
Dortmund CEO Aki Watzke, meanwhile, told Sky: "We are happy with the draw. I feel sorry for Uli Hoeness for not having drawn the weakest opponent". A response to commments Hoeness had made earlier in the week that Dortmund would represent the easiest route to the final for Bayern.
General manager Michael Zorc marked his side out as underdogs in the games against Real and admitted they would have preferred to finish with a home tie.
He said: "That is a good draw, both pairings are ideal for European football. Going into our tie we will be the slight outsiders, but we have already beaten them once this season. We won a lot of respect through that. It will be two absolute highlight games. Of course, we had hoped to play the away leg first."
The games will be played Tuesday April 23 and Wednesday 24, with the return games the following week - April 30 and May 1. The final takes place at Wembley on Saturday May 25, when the winners of semi-final 2 [Dortmund or Madrid] will be the designated 'home' side.
Van Nistelrooy also used the occasion to say he felt for another of his former sides - Malaga - who were eliminated from the competition in heartbreaking and controversial style by Dortmund on Tuesday.
"I am still a bit sad for my Malaga not to be there," the Dutchman said. "It was such a harsh way to go out. I want to tell them I am so proud of them."
