Wayne Rooney refuse to celebrate with United team-mates in Swansea victory?

Wayne Rooney didn't join in with his United team-mates after Robin van Persie's goal
Afric TV24 - FootBall Update

Wayne Rooney is finally facing up to the fact that he will not be allowed to leave Manchester United to join Chelsea.

'But why did Wayne Rooney refuse to celebrate with United team-mates in Swansea victory? The fact that he has accepted to stay this summer'
Rooney was seen chatting to referee Phil Dowd after Danny Welbeck scored United's fourth

Though desperate to play for Jose Mourinho, Rooney has knuckled down to getting himself fit after missing United’s pre-season games through injury.

The striker made his first appearance under David Moyes in last night’s 4-1 win at Swansea but,  having set up two goals as a second-half substitute, seemed not to celebrate either with his team-mates.

He had watched glumly as Robin van Persie scored an acrobatic opener and Danny Welbeck tapped in a second, but came on as a 62nd-minute substitute.

Rooney went on to create the opening for a second goal for Van Persie before teeing up United’s fourth goal for Welbeck, but he appeared to trudge back to the halfway line as his team-mates  celebrated.

There might be a new man at the helm but it turned out to be the same Robin van Persie Again to the New old Manchester United David Moyes

There might be a new man at the helm but it turned out to be the same Robin van Persie Again to the New old Manchester United David Moyes' has United cruised to victory over Swansea in his first competitive game in charge.

Robin van Persie lashed in Manchester United's third goal and his second, from long range
Rooney pictured on the bench, watching as his colleagues took charge of the game
Last season's top scorer Robin van Persie scored twice, as did Danny Welbeck to ensure Moyes' reign started with a win.

Van Persie's contribution was sublime, hooking in the opener before smashing home a 20-yard effort 17 minutes from time, before Wilfried Bony netted a consolation.

Wayne Rooney claimed the assist for the Dutchman's second.

Named as a substitute due to his obvious lack of match practice, Rooney was introduced for the final half-hour and given his desire to join Chelsea, it must have been heartening for the striker to receive a warm ovation from the United fans.

It remains to be seen whether it is enough to change Rooney's view, although given United's steadfast 'not for sale' stance, that may not count for much anyway.

He noticeably did not join in the touchline celebrations after Van Persie scored.

However, he must be aware that even without any significant new arrivals so far, the Red Devils are still destined to be championship contenders this term, and will welcome Jose Mourinho's Chelsea to Old Trafford in nine days' time with many of the fears about Moyes' succession already banished.

After expressing his unease about his side's tough start in midweek, Moyes had more reason to complain at the Liberty Stadium.

His beef turned out to be over nothing more than the booking dished out to Michael Carrick for sliding into Wayne Routledge on the sodden surface.

Happy now? Suarez smiles at Anfield ahead of opener after apologising to team-mates

Fresh from his first day back with training with the first team, Luis Suarez wore his Liverpool shirt and was waving to fans ahead of the team's game against Stoke.

It is a remarkable turnaround from just a few days ago, when the striker seemed set on leaving the club, with Champions League side Arsenal registering their interest.

The controversial Uruguayan received warm applause from the few Liverpool fans who had arrived early enough to witness the unscheduled 'lap of honour', and boss Brendan Rodgers was also happy to see Suarez smiling.

Stoke fans booed and made diving gestures, but Suarez will be reassured by the positive reaction of Reds' supporters, and from his manager.

The Northern Irishman said: ‘I think I said in the press conference that Luis Suarez is obviously banned from playing and out until September. Out of respect for all the other players that have been outstanding for me, I am not going to mention any more on Luis Suarez. The main thing is he's back in the group and smiling.

'He's been brilliant for the club - obviously there have been issues over the summer - but I'm sure they'll be resolved.'

Rodgers had previously ordered Suarez to train by himself last week, after the 26-year-old revealed his desire to join Arsenal, and his insistence that the club had 'promised' he was able to go if they did not reach the top four.

Arsenal 1 Villa 3: Time to spend, Arsene! After being gunned down by Benteke, Wenger has just 16 transfer days to fix these flops

Arsene Wenger was under increasing pressure to splash the cash before the transfer window closes in 16 days time after Arsenal crashed to an opening day defeat.

Benteke heads home the rebound

The Frenchman has signed just one player and let 17 leave during the summer and his threadbare squad has been further depleted by injuries.

Arsenal duo Keiron Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were forced off by injury in the first half and Christian Benteke took advantage to inspire Villa to victory.

Luis Suarez returned to training after apologising to his Liverpool team-mates.

Afric TV24 - FootBall Update

Luis Suarez returned to first-team training at Melwood on Friday after apologising to his Liverpool team-mates.

Suarez has tried to force through a move away from Liverpool for much of the summer and was banished to train on his own at Melwood until he issued an apology to his colleagues.

Fans clamber on bins and even cars to see the Uruguayan back in action

And now Sportsmail understands the Uruguay striker has said sorry to his Liverpool club-mates, hence his inclusion in the first-team training session ahead of Liverpool's Premier League opener against Stoke.
Manager Brendan Rodgers was also having a laugh in training

The £55million-rated Suarez appeared to be in high spirits, as he joked around with fellow Reds players between drills.

The 26-year-old, who was Liverpool's top goalscorer last season, is unavailable for selection against the Potters as he still has six games of a 10-match ban to serve. Suarez was suspended late last season for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez's will-he, won't-he transfer saga has dragged on for much of the summer, with Arsenal having a £40,000,001 bid turned down by the Reds.

Manager Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, has grown tired of talking about the ongoing transfer saga involving Suarez.

Five-Year-Old Girl Abducted at Redemption Camp

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

The abduction of a five-year-old girl, Oluwaseun Ogungbemile, at the Redemption Camp of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, has thrown her parents into panic.

It was learnt that the girl, in company with her parents, had gone to the camp at Kilometre 46 on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State, to attend the one-week annual convention of the church that ended on Sunday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the girl, who is the youngest child of her parents, was last seen playing with two of her cousins on Friday, August 9, 2013.

The victim’s aunt, Omotade Odunowo, told our correspondent that the matter had been reported to the police.

She said, “She (Oluwaseun) was staying at a rented chalet in the camp along with her parents. Around 10am on that day, she was seen with two of her younger cousins, who are between the ages of two and three.

“After sometime, we did not see her again. Due to the young ages of the little children who were with her at the time of her disappearance, we have not been able to know what happened exactly.”

Odunowo said all efforts to trace the victim’s whereabouts proved abortive and the family believed that she had been abducted.

She said the family had searched every nook and cranny of the camp and reported to the relevant authorities in RCCG, all to no avail.

She added that no one had called the family to demand a ransom.

Odunowo said, “We have been traumatised since then and cannot wait for the safe return of our daughter back home. We shall therefore be extremely grateful to receive any information that may lead to our reunion with Oluwaseun. She is adorable, smart and talks a lot.”

She said the girl’s parents had not been alright since the incident. She said the mother had refused to go back to work since her daughter went missing.

She said, “Oluwaseun’s mother has not left the Redemption Camp since the incident occurred. She is still hoping that the person that took her away would bring her back.”

When contacted on the telephone, the state police  command’s Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident to our correspondent, adding that the matter was being investigated at the Redemption Camp Police Station.

“The parents of the victim said they came to the camp with eight children and one of them had gone missing. We have swung into action and we want to assure the family that the little girl will be found,” he said.

A security official at the church, who refused to identify himself, said the matter had been reported to the police.

He however refused to disclose further information, adding that it was not the wish of the church that the news of the abduction be leaked to members of the public.

Jonathan Receives Mali Highest Award

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

President Goodluck Jonathan was yesterday conferred with Mali’s highest award - Grand Croix de l’Ordre National du Mali (or Great Cross of the National Order of Mali), for his role in resolving the crisis in the country.

Receiving the award at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Jonathan said the restoration of peace to the once war-torn Mali was an indication that Nigeria’s substantial, financial, military and material contributions, including the supreme sacrifice paid by two Nigerian Airforce pilots, have not been in vain.

“The cost, not withstanding, and in the spirit of African solidarity I assure you that Nigeria remains steadfastly committed to supporting the course of peace in Mali,” he added.

Jonathan also said Nigeria’s commitment to the cause of peace keeping was based on the conviction that Africa can experience sustained growth if divisive tendencies that strifle development and weaken political structures were overcomed.

The president said, “I have no doubt whatsoever that a politically stable Africa will be a strong and prosperous Africa. As political leaders we owe it to our collective posterity to ensure that we bequeath to them that which will enable them maximize their creative potential favourably in the 21st century world”.

While expressing joy at the successfully concluded presidential election in Mali, President Jonathan said African leaders must entrench and play by “hallowed democratic values”, even as he congratulated President-elect Ibrahim Keita just as he commended his opponent Mr Sumalia Cisse, for losing gallantly and peacefully.

He also thanked President Traore for the honour which he said symbolized evident acknowledgement and appreciation of Nigeria’s commitment and sacrifice to ensure peace and stability in Mali.

Earlier, the interim President of Mali, Prof. Diongunda Traore, before conferring President Jonathan with the award, lauded him for his engagement since the beginning of the security crisis in January 2012 and for its nine-month duration.

He said, “We know how much your country suffers also from terrorism. We know how much Nigeria has needs of its troops, of her soldiers and all the soldiers at her disposal to ensure internal security against forces of evil, who have continued to attack innocent citizens.

“However, inspite of this internal need and pressure, your country has not hesitated to put at the disposal of Mali her  soldiers and her logistics.”

INEC Denies Report Over New Party By Former VP, PDP Govs

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied reports attributed to it that a former vice president and nine governors of  the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have filed an application to register a political party.

The chief press secretary to the national chairman of INEC, Kayode Idowu, in a statement refuted a story in a national daily (not Afric-tv24) which said that he admitted the application for the registration of the party.

He said INEC, by law, receives applications for party registration and treats them on individual merit, noting that it does not make public issue of the party’s identity or their promoters.

The statement reads in part:  “You cited me in a story entitled, ‘Nine PDP Govs Float Party, Apply for Registration’ as confirming to you that the former vice president and some governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party have applied for the registration of a party to be known as the Peoples Progressive Movement (PPM). Your reporter will confirm to you that I never said such a thing.

“The question your reporter asked was if there is any pending application for party registration in the commission, and I confirmed that an application, as always, is pending. Please note: He mentioned no name of any particular group (because he confessed he didn’t even have it) or the promoters.

“INEC, by law, receives applications for party registration and treats them on individual merit. It makes no public issue of the party identity or their promoters. For avoidance of doubt, I did not discuss any party identity or promoters with your reporter because he didn’t have enough information to provide such detail in his enquiry.”

Meanwhile the former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar yesterday said he was still a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) even though he acknowledged that some of his associates are seeking to register PDM.

Progressive Govs Not Opposed To LG Autonomy – APC

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that its governors are not against autonomy for local governments as reported in a section of the media,
describing such reports as a gross misrepresentation of the governors’ position on the issue.

In a statement issued in Oro, Kwara State, yesterday by its interim national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the governors are only asking that such autonomy must be determined by the state houses of assembly, rather than the National Assembly.

“For those who may have been misled by the media reports, we want to state our stand clearly. In the first instance, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria gives the state Houses of Assembly the power to create local governments. Therefore, autonomy for local governments should be debated at the houses of assembly, not at the National Assembly.

‘’Secondly, giving control of the local governments to the federal government, one of the two federating units in a federalist system of government, will only result in the creation of a unitary government.

‘’And thirdly, all local government administration must be democratically elected in a free and fair election, while chairmen and councillors must be accountable to those who elected them.

It said APC was a welfarist party that believe in accountability and abhor any system where any local government administration was not elected freely and fairly, adding that the appointment of caretaker committees to run local governments is an aberration. “This is our stand and it

definitely does not represent an opposition to autonomy for local governments,’’ APC said.

The party said instead of creating more problems by giving the National Assembly the power to regulate local governments, ways must be found to resolve existing problems for the smooth running of local governments.

“Let us ensure that local government elections are free, fair and credible; let us ensure that chairmen and councillors are accountable.

“Let us stop the appointment of caretaker committees to run local governments because this is undemocratic. Let the state houses of assembly which have the powers to create local governments also be able to determine the issue of autonomy.”

In the wake of this bizarre killings allegedly perpetrated by the suspected herdsmen, the people of Akumazi Community, Ika North East local government area of the state have appealed to the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, to intervene and put a stop to the incessant grazing of their farm lands by the animals herded by the suspects.

Speaking to Leadership Friday, the traditional ruler in the area, HRM Obi Stephen Chukwuyeme Osagie III, however, called on the state government to come to their aid with security agents, noting that members of the clan who challenged the suspected cattle dealers have either been killed or sustained machete cuts.

The traditional ruler disclosed that palpable tension pervade the entire community,as residents now sleep with an eye open.

Residents of two other communities, Leadership Friday reliably gathered, especially Ogume in Ndokwa West local government area, have also raised the alarm, following the killings of 10 of its members by the suspected Fulani herdsmen who invaded their farms last week.

The story, Leadership Friday understands, is the same in Ughelli North (Uwheni/Agbadama), where the activities of the suspected Fulani herdsmen left many wounded and several dead, before the state government moved in to contain the situation.

In Abavo, the situation portends bad omen for farmers, following the alleged killings of persons in their farmlands by unknown gunmen.

Speaking to journalists, Police Commissioner in the state, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba, disclosed that the police have arrested several persons suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, adding that “the police will leave no stone unturned to bring those perpetrating these evil acts to book.”

Nigeria Bigest Challenge Is Boko Haram - US

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

The United States government said yesterday that Nigeria cannot fully succeed in playing its leadership role in Africa unless it overcomes its biggest challenge of insecurity posed by the Boko Haram insurgents.

It, however, offered to assist the country, saying, “Nigeria’s success is important to us, and we will continue to invest in Nigeria’s institutions, people, and businesses to both countries’ mutual benefit”.

U.S. under secretary Wendy Sherman, who stated this at the 9th U.S.-Nigeria Bi-National Commission Meeting, noted that the United States and Nigeria have ties to each other at every level.

“At some $5 billion dollars, Nigeria is the second largest destination for U.S. private investments in Africa.  However, one of our strongest connections is even more personal. More than 1.5 million Nigerians and Nigerian-Americans live in the United States, and an estimated 31,000 U.S. citizens live in Nigeria,” she stated.

On the insurgency bedeviling the country, Sherman said, “We also recognize that success cannot be achieved unless Nigeria surmounts the challenges that frustrate progress.  It is in this spirit that the United States engages today in this working group on Regional Security Cooperation. Nigeria faces several challenges to national and regional stability.

“The largest of these challenges is, of course, a Boko Haram-led insurgency operating in the country’s northeast that has created widespread insecurity across northern Nigeria, increased tensions between various ethnic communities, interrupted developmental activities, frightened off investors and generated concerns among Nigeria’s northern neighbours. Nigeria cannot fully achieve its potential as a stable regional leader until it successfully overcomes the challenge of Boko Haram and secures peace and protection for all its citizens in all regions”.

Noting that Boko Haram offers no practical solutions to the problems confronting the northern part of the country, she said, “Instead, it capitalizes on popular frustrations, religious differences, and economic and social difficulties, seeking to undermine the government and exploit religious differences in order to create chaos and make Nigeria ungovernable.

“The United States knows from experience the immense difficulty in confronting an enemy that respects no boundaries and kills civilians indiscriminately.  Today, I hope that our teams can identify specific areas in the context of regional security where we can deepen our partnership and chart concrete steps forward on those topics on which we are already working together.”

On how to tackle the security menace, the US under secretary said: “Security efforts are necessary to protect innocent Nigerians, to prevent Boko Haram’s acts of violence, and to capture and prosecute its leaders.  The Nigerian government and military must also win over the hearts and minds of northern populations by protecting them and providing timely and commensurate justice to both insurgents and the victims of this unfortunate conflict.

“Though no easy task, a comprehensive approach that addresses socio-economic problems, articulates clear rules of engagement, and commits to accountability for those who perpetrate violence, both Boko Haram and security forces will demonstrate to every Nigerian that their future is brighter in a more secure Nigeria.

“This may require a new social compact with Nigerian citizens that encompass an economic recovery strategy as a complement to the government’s security strategy.  This approach will be successful to the extent that it can garner the support of northern governors and local officials, traditional and religious leaders, civil society organizations, and a generation of young Nigerians who are connected to their government, locally and federally.

“Achieving success will not be easy, but we are ready to work with you as one of your strongest and most faithful friends and partners, to discuss new ways of help.  We stand ready to work together to develop a multi-faceted strategy to counter the threat posed by Boko Haram that also demonstrates to civilians that they will be protected.

“Nigeria’s diverse people, land, and spirit have already established a foundation for long-term national and regional stability; however, with today’s insurgent challenges, strong nations must deepen our commitment to respect human life and dignity, build peace, and prevent future atrocities, even in the midst of a protracted conflict with a violent enemy.

The Havoc In Edo, Delta States By False Prophets And Pastors Are Geting Out Of Hands

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

The activities of fake prophets and pastors have reportedly been on the increase in Edo and Deltas states. The fake clerics, who are alleged to have wreaked havoc in the states by their action, are said to have indulged in duping and raping unsuspecting married women in recent times. Unconfirmed reports estimate that over 226 women have been allegedly duped and raped in the last three years by the charlatans.

Several desperate salvation seekers in Edo and Delta states have recounted horrendous ordeals in the hands of these ‘prophets and pastors,’ who are often clad in the best dresses and wearing the best perfumes, in order to attract their unsuspecting prey.

In Edo state, several unsuspecting members of the public have lost their money to men who parade themselves as prophets, pastor or prayer warriors, as a result of what they claimed to be spells cast on them. According to the victims, these men displayed all manner of spiritualism and cajoled them to pay money into their various bank accounts.

On Monday, a self-acclaimed ‘reverend’ around the Upper Sakponba, Benin City, ran into trouble when one of his scheme back-fired, and he was exposed. Noted for reportedly organising prayers for people for those who need to get their visas to travel abroad, and conducting delivery services for barren women, the fake swooped on a young man who had planned to travel abroad, collected money from him, and promised to “pray” for him to get a visa.

Matters took a turn for the worst when the young man appeared at the embassy of the country he wished to travel to for his visa, but was turned down. He quickly alerted the police that the fake had collected N250,000 to “pray” for him, and the ‘reverend’ was arrested.

In areas like Asaba, Isoko, Agbor, Warri and Sapele, the situation is worse, as thousands of unsuspecting and desperate salvation seekers have been duped, while married and unmarried women among them have either been raped in the church or in guest houses (names withheld).

Unconfirmed reports say some of these fake clerics lodge at a popular hotel behind the stadium in Asaba, from where they convince their targets to part with thousands of naira, for various purposes.

Secret Meeting Was Held With Kwankwaso, Lamido, Wamakko By Tukur

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

Three of the northern governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday met with the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, in Abuja over the crisis within the party.

The governors that met with Tukur are Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and Aliyu Wamako (Sokoto).

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu and his Adamawa State Murtala Nyako were not at the meeting.

Afric-tv24 gathered that the delegation of governors had gone to confront Tukur over the way he was running the party.

The governors had, among other things, complained about the interference of the national chairman in the affairs of the party in the states.

In their earlier comments, they had decried the crisis in Rivers State, and the plight of the governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and called for the removal of Tukur as a panacea to the crisis in the party.

The meeting between the three northern governors and Tukur came barely hours after a series of meetings involving former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Jonathan and PDP governors at the Presidential Villa.

The northern governors had visited former presidents and elder statements over the political situation in the country.

Afric-tv24 gathered from a presidency source that the meeting was at the instance of the president, who had instructed the national chairman of the party to reconcile with the northern governors.

Another source, however, confirmed to Afric-tv24 that Tukur invited the governors over for the meeting.

But a statement by Tukur’s aide, Oliver Okpala, yesterday said the governors apologised on behalf of the other governors, including those of Adamawa and Niger states.

He said the meeting which lasted several hours “resolved that they have returned to the leadership of the party and that all that happened in the past, which involved grievances, accusations and counter-accusations, were done because of a gap in communication amidst disinformation from some quarters between them and the leadership of the party.

“And having listened to the national chairman, they are now properly informed about the happening in the party and promised that, from henceforth, they will work in harmony and unity with the leadership of the party and also pledged their loyalty under Dr Bamanga Tukur.”

Yes, Amaechi Is Stubborn Concerning The Truth – Peterside

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

Hon. Dakuku Peterside, is a member of the House of  Representatives, representing Opobo/Nkoro/Andoni Federal Constituency and Chairman House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream). He recently spoke to some journalists on the prevailing situation in Rivers State. Excerpts:

BY OKEY NDIBIRE

As a key stakeholder in Rivers , do you see peace returning to the State?
I see peace returning to Rivers State.  But that would happen after all those who destabilised the state for their personal and parochial interest would have seen the futility of their actions. I have always known that evil will not triumph over good just as darkness cannot resist light. Governor Amaechi represents light in many ways.

But opponents of the Governor have placed advertorials on  the pages of newspapers and in the electronic media  stating that Gov Amaechi is opposed to reconciliation?

Governor Amaechi desires and is committed to reconciliation but not at the expense of Rivers State interest. He has taken steps to show that he is not averse to reconciliation. The Governor has gone to brief the President and I believe that the President is committed to the peace, progress and stability of the nation.

The implication of that for me is that the president will take steps to advance peace in all parts of the territory of Nigeria including Rivers State. I am optimistic that the president will not allow political considerations including his own perceived ambition prevail over the overall interest of the country. I know the president is conscious of his place in history.

Can you comment on the allegation by the Governor’s political opponents that his stubbornness is part of the problem of Rivers State?

It is possible that Governor Amaechi is stubborn in upholding the truth. It is possible Gov Amaechi is stubborn in defending Rivers resources and Rivers interest. But they should know that we are running a federal system and Governor Amaechi is accountable first to God and to Rivers people who elected him. Nobody has said Gov Amaechi is dishonest. It is true that Governor Amaechi has tremendous courage in a society where courage is lacking.

Can you comment on rumours making the rounds that EFCC  is investigating Rivers State officials and the Governor’s wife’s NGO?

The Governor is not averse to investigation because he is one of the most transparent governors  in Nigeria today. He is equally vocal and thus cannot afford the risk of corruption. But any investigation by EFCC which is a creation of the law or legislation must be within the context of law.

There is a subsisting court order barring the EFCC from investigating Rivers State. Governor Rotimi Amaechi did not secure that injunction so EFCC must vacate it first before proceeding to investigate Rivers State and her officials. On the threat to investigate ESI, the NGO founded by the wife of the Governor for which I am Chairman of the Board of Trustees, it is nonsensical as it is unlawful. ESI is not a government agency nor is it a statutory body.

Public interest
No trustee of ESI has complained that there is fraud or that the non-profit group has acted against the spirit of the foundation on which it was established or acted against public interest.

It is only when a trustee of ESI complains to law enforcement agencies that you can call for investigation of its finances. We have too many ignorant busybodies posing as party officials in Rivers State. I sympathize with them. I sincerely thought we have gotten to a stage where the interest of Rivers State and Rivers people should be uppermost in our minds.

There is a threat by the current leadership  of PDP in Rivers State to suspend you and other National Assembly members from PDP?

You mean the persons parading themselves as party executives in Rivers State? This threat shows two things; the first is that they are the ones who do not want reconciliation in the party because they are afraid of what fate will befall them. Anything established on wrong foundation will certainly fail. The second is that it shows the degree of their desperation and ignorance of the provisions of the PDP constitution.

30,000 women Grounded Abuja Led By First Lady

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara - Nigeria

Welcome to Afric tv24's News Update

ABUJA  —
Nigeria’s Federal Capital, Abuja, was literally grounded, yesterday, as about 30,000 women drawn from 36 states of the Federation, led by the First Lady,
Dame Patience Jonathan,  held a rally to sensitise women in the country on the gains recorded so far in enhancing peace and women empowerment.

The event, which was held at the Eagles Square, effectively cut off workers from the imposing Federal Secretariat on both Shehu Shagari Way and Ibrahim Babangida Road, forcing them to trek  to the office.

Surprise for Abuja workers, residents

The event, which took workers and residents by surprise, also prevented commercial and government drivers from dropping their passengers, mostly workers in their designated bus stops around the secretariat.

Instead, hordes of stern-looking and gun-totting security men, who had descended on the venue before dawn, ordered them to stop some 200 metres away from the Square, which is surrounded by the Federal Secretariat.

As vehicular and human traffic was effectively cut off from all the routes leading to the venue of the rally, tagged, “Nigerian Women Rally for Peace and Empowerment”, frustrated motorists were directed to any available route. This led to a traffic snarl in most part of the day.

Consequently, all major streets in the business district of Abuja were blocked by traffic, giving traffic wardens a hectic day. While the traffic chaos lasted, armed soldiers and battle-ready policemen took positions on strategic road intersections, frisking commuters and pedestrians.

The armed men on the streets were given aerial support by military helicopters, which hovered over the venue of the rally, making occasional displays, as they flew past.

At the rally,Dame Jonathan, backed by Vice President Namadi Sambo and some ministers and their spouses, relished the show as thousands of women danced and marched past them.

The First Lady smiled and waved at the women groups, as the floats ferrying them drove past.

Women in various military and paramilitary agencies in the country and women organisations gave goodwill messages to the President’s wife.

Speaking at the ceremony, First Lady, Dr. Patience Jonathan, who is also the President, African First Ladies Peace Mission, explained that the show was intended to mobilize and galvanize Nigerian women towards greater contribution to peace and the overall development of the Nigerian nation.

She stated that women have an important role to play in sustaining and advancing the cause of peace and development in the country.

She described Nigeria as one of the best endowed countries in the world, stressing that with greater understanding and love among all Nigerians the country would certainly achieve her full potentials.

First Lady hails women

The First Lady gave kudos to the various women groups from all states of the federation and the FCT for their support, while thanking the President and many state governors for giving the womenfolk opportunity to serve at various levels in the civil and public sector.

Among those who attended the ceremony were Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo, FCT Minister Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, many female and male ministers, including the Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, the First Lady of the Republic of South Africa, Mrs. Jacob Zuma and the first ladies of two other African countries.

Also present at the event were members of the diplomatic corps, Federal Executive Council, National Assembly as well as wives of state governors among others.

The rally was spiced with musical and cultural renditions, and among those who rendered highly inspiring music at the ceremony were Onyeka Onwenu, Inyanya, Johnny, Yinka Ayefele, Sani Danja and Young Snatchers.

Security lock down in Abuja

The security lockdown in Abuja, Vanguard learnt, was also necessitated by the suspicion that some insurgents had planned to attack certain places in the country this week.

As a result of the rally and the snarl in the city, major institutions could hardly operate for most of the day.

The rally, which was attended by women from across the states, began from the Old Parade Ground through some designated routes in the FCT and terminated at the Eagles Square.

Most commuters, who spoke with Vanguard, described their ordeal as horrible and blamed government for inflicting such hardship on them.

Abiodun Azeez, a taxi driver said: “The traffic was just too much. I wonder if the organisers took into consideration the havoc caused the ordinary citizens, whose means of livelihood was disrupted for the day.

“I met the traffic right from the Yar’Ádua Centre and immediately turned away from that road and followed another route only to be confronted by a more serious snarl in the town. For that reason, I had to drop my car and take a special drop, which could not take me to my office because security men stopped the driver before the Eagle Square.

Emmanuel Ayara, a businessman said: “I dropped my car at Area III Junction. I stay in Mararaba and I work at Commerce Plaza in Area III. Yes, there was a little traffic at AYA, but initially I wanted to pass through Central Area; I couldn’t pass through Central Area because of the traffic. That is why I decided to drop my car and use taxi to come to town yet I couldn’t move in town, you can see me with my load that is why I just had to drop with my load and walk.”

Mrs Grace Kani, a worker with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Abuja, lamented the effect of the lockdown on her business, saying it was not a pleasant experience to be trapped in traffic for over five hours.

Adeniyi Akanni said: “It was very difficult getting here and it is affecting our business and for me, I will just abandon that central area and I will not carry passengers going down that way because if I go there, I will get stuck there.”
