Jonathan Urges Political Gladiators In Rivers State, To Respect the Constitution, and the Rule Of Law

Africcon Blogspot Report: President Goodluck Jonathan Urges those involved in the political violence that engulfed the Rivers State House of Assembly to show greater respect for the constitution and the rule of law.

Reports Says; President Jonathan urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and all other political gladiators in the state to put the interests of the state and the nation above their personal egos and ambitions that seem to have gotten in the way of their expected commitment to uphold the principles of democracy and good governance.

The President called on all those who were remotely or directly involved in heightening political tension in Rivers State to put an immediate end to their actions which are capable of plunging Rivers State into public disorder and strive to settle their political differences without further recourse to barbaric acts of violence.

He said he expects all members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, irrespective of their current affiliations or loyalties, to comport themselves with greater restraint while efforts continue to resolve existing differences and restore internal harmony to the state branch of the party.

The statement added, “the Presidency has also noted with regret the continuing attempts by some individuals and groups to place responsibility for the unpleasant developments in Rivers State on President Jonathan.”

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has heaped the blame for the crisis in Rivers State on President Jonathan and asked the National Assembly to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against him for failing to live up to his oath of office to uphold the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Mr Abati’s statement however said, “We are constrained to state once again that there is absolutely no factual basis for suggestions that some of the politicians involved in the current dispute are acting at the behest of the President.

“President Jonathan certainly did not instigate the crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly and as President of the nation; he will never support any actions that negate his avowed commitment to the rule of law. The President will also never violate his oath of office to always defend the Nigerian Constitution.”

Recall that on Tuesday morning the sitting of the Rivers State House of Assembly was disrupted when hoodlums and some members attacked the principal officers of the house, with an assortment of weapons.

The house which adjourned sine die for some weeks now, in the wake of the political crisis between Governor Amaechi and President Goodluck Jonathan’s pointsmen in the state, re-opened this morning at about 9.45 a.m.

Proceedings have barely started when some members, said to belong to the G5 minority group, arrived with some hoodlums and started beating up the majority leader of the house, Chidi Lloyd with sticks, microphone and camera stands and any object that could serve as cudgels.

The Speaker of the house, Otelemaba Amachree was similarly attacked and the mace broken.

Federal High Court, Abuja Denies Bail To Three Lebanese-Hezbollah Suspects

Federal High Court, Abuja Denies Bail To Three Lebanese-Hezbollah Suspects

Africcon Blogspot Report: Three Lebanese business men standing trial for terrorism and illegal possession of arms have been denied bail by a Federal High Court, Abuja.

Reports Says;

Justice Adeniyi Ademola ruled that the prosecution had been established against Mustapha Fawaz, Abdallah Thahini and Talal Ahmad Roda.

He added that the medical report placed before the court by the defendants is not cogent enough to allow the court exercise its discretion in their favor.

Justice Ademola also ruled that the exhibit of arms and ammunition presented by the prosecution said to be recovered from the defendants possession, is a serious national security concern for Nigeria and when national security is involved, the personal liberty of an individual must take a back seat.

On the issue of re-opening Amigo supermarket and  Abuja Wonderland Amusement Park belonging to the Lebanese, Justice Ademola again cited national security reason and refused to make an order for the premises to be reopened as the prosecution had made a case that investigation are still ongoing and there is a likelihood of making more discoveries in the two premises.

As such he rejected the bail application and set trial to begin on the 29th of July 2013, while the defense was ordered to filed all its documents and serve all parties in the suit.

Meanwhile the accused persons are to remain in the custody of the Department of state Services.

The Return Mourinho Claims To Be A Better Manager

Africcon Blogspot Report: The Return Mourinho Claims To Be A Better Manager

Reports Says;

The Manager Jose Mourinho believes he has more to offer the club second time around – and would love to do so with Wayne Rooney in his line-up.

Since leaving Stamford Bridge in 2007, Mourinho has spent time at both Inter Milan and Real Madrid, and believes he is now more rounded as he sets himself up for a second spell in the hotseat this season.

During a news conference in Thailand on Friday the 50-year-old also hinted that he would love to bring Rooney to west London.

Mourinho admitted to being a big fan of Rooney, but conceded he remained very much a Manchester United player.

Since arriving at Chelsea earlier this summer, Mourinho has bought Dutch midfielder Marco Van Ginkel, German striker Andre Schurrle and Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.

Schurrle admitted to feeling the weight of expectation after his transfer, but is determined to deliver.

The first game in charge for Mourinho will be held on July 17 when Chelsea play against the Thai All Stars team in Bangkok stadium.

After Thailand, the current Europa League champions will visit Malaysia and Indonesia.

Federal High Court Convicts Son Of Jigawa State Governor For Money Laundering

Africcon Blogspot Report:  Federal High Court Convicts Son Of Jigawa State Governor For Money Laundering

Reports Says;

Federal High Court in Kano state, North West Nigeria, has charged and convicted the son of Jigawa state, Aminu Sule Lamido for conveying the sum of $50,000 to Cairo which he failed to declare.

Delivering the judgement on Friday, Justice Fatu Riman said the accused is expected to forfeit 25 percent of the total sum of the money he refused to declare to the authorities.

Aminu Sule Lamido was arrested alongside his wife and two children on the 14th of February 2013 by customs officials at Mallam Aminu International airport while attempting to travel to Cairo.

Lamido was arrested with a total exceeding amount to carry while leaving the country.

Although, Aminu Lamido has been convicted, the judge also explains that it does not make him a criminal.

Aminu has also not been sentenced to any jail term nor asked to pay for any fine apart from the 25 percent forfeited amount.

However, counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Barrister Hanafi Sa’ad said the judgement is one of the best so far and could be used as reference by others.

Having identified the circumstances surrounding Aminu’s trip with the said money, which include his daughters’ sickness and the need for her urgent medical attention in Cairo, both counsels are of the view that the law for false declaration of currency should be amended.

former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha has been dismissed & acquitted of killing the wife of politician Moshood Abiola

Africcon Blogspot Report:  former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha has been dismissed & acquitted of killing the wife of politician Moshood Abiola

Reports Says;

The Appeal Court in Lagos has dismissed charges of conspiracy to murder Alhaja Kudirat Abiola levelled against former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha (RTD).

The Court in a unanimous decision ruled that there was no direct circumstantial evidence that he conspired with anyone as evidence of prosecution witnesses in that regard were contradictory.

Our legal correspondent, Shola Soyele  who is in the court reports that, Justice Rita Pemu who read the lead judgment held that there was no direct circumstantial evidence that he conspired with anyone as evidence of prosecution witnesses in that regard were contradictory.

She further held that based on facts and evidence before the court, it is certainly not Al-Mustapha who pulled the trigger and murdered Alhaja Kudirat Abiola.

The Court holds that he is liable to be discharged and acquitted.

Justice Amina Augie who is the presiding Judge has just concurred with the lead judgement as read by Justice Rita Pemu.

Third Judge, Justice Fatima Akinbami has also agreed with the lead judgement meaning that the ruling is unanimous.

Al-Mustapha’s co-accused, Lateef Shofolahan was also discharged on the same grounds.

The duo of Al-Mustapha and Shofolahan had appealed against the judgment of a Lagos High Court which sentenced them to death for the June 4, 1996 murder of Kudirat Abiola, wife of the deceased winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola.

Justice Mojisola Dada of the Lagos High Court had found them guilty of the offence, and accordingly convicted and sentenced them to death by hanging.

Counsel to the appellants had however, appealed to the Court of Appeal, 24-hours after the sentence of the convicts.

In the notice of appeal, the appellants contend that the death sentence handed by the lower court was unwarranted, unreasonable and a manifest miscarriage of justice.

The convicts were first arraigned in October 1999 on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy and their involvement in the 1996 murder of the late Kudirat, on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway.

Nigerian Sani Abacha aide has been acquitted of killing the wife of politician Moshood Abiola

Africcon Blogspot Report:  Nigerian Sani Abacha aide has been acquitted of killing the wife of politician Moshood Abiola

Reports Says;
A close aide to former Nigerian military ruler Sani Abacha has been acquitted of killing the wife of politician Moshood Abiola, after spending 14 years in prison.

Major Hamza al-Mustapha was sentenced last year to hang for ordering the killing of Kudirat Abiola.

She was shot dead in 1996, three years after the elections her husband is believed to have won.

Those elections were annulled and Abacha seized power.

He went on to become one of Nigeria's most notorious military rulers, accused of stealing billions of dollars from the oil-rich nation.

Abacha and Abiola both died in 1998, paving the way for the end of decades of military rule the following year.

The BBC's Tomi Oladipo in Lagos say that a huge crowd of Maj Mustapha's supporters cheered outside the courtroom following the news of his acquittal.

The appeal court ruled that the charges of murder and conspiracy had been politically motivated.

The lower court "did not evaluate the evidence placed before it as the court was out to convict the appellant [Mustapha] at all costs," Judge Rita Pemu said, according to the AFP news agency.

"There is no evidence linking the appellant with the offence. Therefore, the appellant is discharged and acquitted," she added.

Maj Mustapha's lawyers appealed in December 2012, condemning as an "injustice" the many years he had spent in detention during the much-delayed case.

The prosecution, however, plan to appeal to the Supreme Court.

One of Abacha's sons, Mohammed, was also accused of links to Mrs Abiola's killing but was cleared in 2002 after three years in detention.

After Abacha seized power, Abiola declared himself president and was charged with treason.

He died in detention in the presence of US officials - a month after Abacha died from a heart attack.

Sir.

As I am MCA student and studied about software development which depends on full of creativity. Same thing can be done as many ways which depends on person ability and knowledge and way of applying skills.

I would like to give very simple example:

Designing and developing web page is full of creativity.

Usually online shopping site has no trial for any gadgets and cloths which is big disadvantage of these sites. If online shopping sites has trial for each customer then it will be more beneficial for customer and help to choose proper thing own choice colors and perfect match. In my point of view this problem can be resolve by using web cam. Using web cam these sites can take picture of customer and sets the picture of customer their own choice gadgets and cloths which helps customer for perfect match.

Sir,

My creativity is thinking everything in a different manner.
Whatever we are thinking should be different from others and also acceptable by others.
For example:Every spider has its own creativity in designing the web and it is different from one another. In the same way I used to create my own style in every situation.

Frankly speaking I am not creative. Once my sir asked me can you describe yourself for 5 mins. Then I said for 5 mins ohh my god but now I feel much easy.

The last time someone told me that I'm creative, It s when I show my drawing, I draw a strong hand with roots rising from a land, I Connected two different things a human hand with a land. When I see the drawing I feel like I will overcome in a difficult situation.

We are human being, it very common for us to get angry in some situation like double face talk, political game etc which we don't like. In my childhood, I usually get angry for very small-small things from this I learnt a lesson anger always harm myself instead of others so I always avoid get angry and try to make enemy as my good friend. I always avoid political game and back face talk which creates untreatable environment. This environment is not good for anyone or any organization.

I get angry if someone dismisses my opinion without any proper reason and doesn't tend to hear anything.
But the good thing is that my convincing power is better than my anger.

I'm a cool person. But I get angry when people keep on instructing me if I'm doing some work. I like to do my work in my own way. And I get angry when someone talks rudely. And shows lot of attitude. At d same time I have good control on my anger.

I will get angry if anyone betray me. Sometimes it may happen that anyone is telling me anything which is actually not true then it makes me angry. Hence the best way to get rid is to tell him that if he does something wrong or telling lie that will indirectly affecting the benefit of the company.

Sleeping sir.
If I not sleep well in night and come to office next day with that face I might not able to show my passion on my work and its give me a little bit Angry on my self.

Sir.

Sir, I think its an opportunity to work under pressure that can help to come out my hidden capacity, and I believe that its a responsibility of everyone to work in given atmosphere.

Yes I can work under pressure because in such situation I concentrate only on my work and I new ideas generate to solve a problem.

To tell you the truth, I think I work the same if there's pressure or if there's no pressure. I try and take out negative emotional factors and work hard regardless of down time or busy time. I always prioritize and organize my work, and from there, work efficiently. If the situation involved pressure due to a lack of time, then the only difference in my work would be the extra time I would need to put in to meet the deadline on time. Since I believe my normal work is great work, then I suppose I work well under pressure.

Sir.

Sir, During my vocational training I completely understood that how an organisation work. With mutual cooperation and understanding between the employees. So if I have to work overtime at nights or in weekends to accommodate for the extra work due to absence of any of my colleague or due to any kind of emergency. I would always be there for my company at any time.

Sir, Working at nights and weekends signifies that the 'PLAN' has gone wrong or it was poor. No manager plans a deliverable such that his employees has to work overtimes. As an employee I will work day and night to complete the task at hand, but will also emphasize on lessons learnt. I will work with my supervisor and peers such that working on nights or weekends becomes an exception rather than a rule.

Sir, I am honestly saying I am a fresher first and I do anything in my career so I need a platform to learn and show my talent and hard working capacity, so definitely I will do my work at any time. I mean. Not a my work my extra works.

Sir.
  • I do not consider two to be contrast of each other. What I believe in is that.

"Hard work = good".
"Smart work = good".
"Hard work done smartly = excellent".
For achieving excellence both are equally important.

Smart work: By keep in mind result and steps include in the the completion of work. Follow steps with innovative ideas and knowledge.
Hard work: Do work by keeps only result in mind and with maximum effort.

HARD WORK depends only on how much effort we put it on the given work.
SMART WORK depends on the intelligence and creativity.

If the person have passion on his work it will become smart-work.
If the person have unpassionate on his work it will become Hard-work

Gov Lamido - APC is a political fraud

Africcon Blogspot Report:  Gov Lamido - APC is a political fraud

Reports Says;

After a two-day state-wide sight-seeing in Jigawa State, four journalists sat with Governor Sule Lamido in his private chamber in the Governor’s Lodge, Dutse for an interactive session. Here are some excerpts:

The Jigawa landscape seems to have changed in the last six years. What happened?

The role of a person in office is to perform the functions of that office. Because of distortions and aberrations we have literally submitted to hopelessness. That is my pain. Why should you be surprised? What is there that any other country can do that we cannot do in Nigeria? It is people; I mean in any human endeavour; in the sciences, Nigerians can compete with anybody in this world; with any professor, anywhere. The Nigerian is a very hard-working person. We as people are very industrious. How can we continue to evoke this kind of emotion in seeing something being done right, must we only do the wrong thing as a people?

So, would you consider volunteering yourself to fill the perceived leadership vacuum in the country?

This country is applying democracy with idiosyncrasies and our own peculiarities. That it is not the turn of the person yet. It is the Nigerian chemistry you have to look into, which has been hijacked by people who manipulate it. Today, if you go to somebody in the South-South he would say ‘my son is there, he must be!’ It would not matter whether that man is killing him. So, first and foremost, the Nigerian chemistry, is it thoroughly healed? The elites are they honest enough? The people, are they courageous enough to do the right thing.”

If you fall into our own compartment like South-South, South-East, Ibo, Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, you cannot win any national election. You must campaign as a Nigerian leader, but after winning election somebody will come and start saying “he is our son, he must serve a second term”.  After winning a national election some people will claim him as an ethnic or regional property. It is when you win election then, Chief Edwin Clark would say “our son must have a second term.” If he said he must get the PDP ticket, you can say so because ticket is a party affair, but even that is to be decided by party delegates.

But second term is a factor of election. If you are saying his party must give him the ticket it is okay. Let them give him. But it doesn’t mean he is going to win the election. But when you say he must win the election, then what are you talking about? What then is democracy? And this old man … in 2011, the name Edwin Clark was not part of PDP vocabulary. And then look at it today, it has become the main vocabulary. And what is the qualification? Emotion and sentiments. And Nigeria made him to grow till 86 and secured; is he giving Nigerians the same hope for them to be 80; those who are ten and twenty now, by his pronouncements? Is he giving them hope to be what he is to Nigeria? Because Nigeria made him and dignified him. He was a federal minister.

Would you have preferred that Nigerians ignore him?
No. You see, there are some people who have acquired a kind of status – statesman – they should be circumspect in whatever they say. There are some things they should not say.

The way you speak you sound terribly disappointed in him?
Absolutely! Because it is about politics and about PDP and he (Clark) had no input in making the president. He met Jonathan as a finished product, not as a raw material. That was why I said Edwin Clark was never part of the PDP vocabulary in 2011. Was he? Absolutely not! Because of your proximity to the man in power, you now begin to carry his fights and wars and all that.

There is something called sobering character – something which encapsulates what you call the Nigerian mission; the Nigerian interest, the Nigerian collective interest, which will unify us and then define us so that we hold it very dear; we would cherish it. We can defend it with our lives. That is what any credible leader should hold tightly to, not divisive emotions.

So with people like Edwin Clark and Asari Dokubo who seem to be at the forefront now, what are the fears you have for Nigeria?

It is just like Chief Bola Ige, of blessed memory and others in Afenifere and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). When we talk about June 12 they were not anywhere near it on June 11. That is my worry – that people don’t reckon with history. People who take advantage of a national effort and kind of appropriate it for their ethnic ends. Where were they on June 11? It is the same thing we are going through! Asari Dokubo and Clark, where were they in 2010? Where were they when PDP held their primaries? They were not there. So you must not diminish Nigeria or the office of the President.

Yoruba Nigeria president
It is true Nigeria president must come from a tribe, a village and a zone but by the time you get there, you are absolutely a Nigerian. That was why in 1999, in trying to heal the wounds of June 11, we said fair enough, let us locate the presidency in the South – west. Truly, it is not the preserve of northerners only but then in taking it to the South-West; we are looking for Yoruba Nigerian president and we decided on former President Olusegun Obasanjo. We were looking for Yoruba Nigeria president and not just because of the agenda of the Yoruba. And that was why we picked Obasanjo and the Yorubas didn’t want him.

So what I’m saying is that today, coming to your question, it is not about my aspiration: are we cured? Are the emotions gone; the sentiments, are they all gone? Are they ready to melt into what you call a genuine effort to be able to restore Nigeria as the leader of Africa, leader of the black race? So my aspiration, to me, is not a big deal. As far as I’m concerned, by my upbringing there are some ideals I cherish and once they are being followed by anybody there is no problem. The entire thing is not about personal ambition, it is about working for a larger picture.

So to me, if the person in place is doing the right thing I have no problem. Let him remain there forever. Now it is left to us to sort out what we want. If we keep on emphasising emotions, sentiments, appropriation of power, of course, we will remain where we are; the richer will be getting richer while the poor will be getting poorer.

Nigerians have expressed disgust over the outcome from the chairmanship election in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF). How do you feel?

The NGF is an informal forum, you don’t have to belong to it. It is just for our own convenience and issues we discuss are just purely economic and security, that is all. We don’t discuss politics at that place. Really, the NGF is not a very big issue that you should be worried about. It is nothing for God’s sake. But in Nigeria everything is for entertainment.

Is the friction really about 2015 as is being suggested?
I’m a Muslim and there is something called destiny in my religion, which is God’s template where before the beginning to the end of more than billions of years, everything has been put in that template and by the time the time comes then it becomes. Now who has that guarantee that he is going to live till 2015? Why are we wasting our energy and our steam over it?

APC interim national publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed was quoted as saying that by the middle of July the party would have 23 governors. Are you among those about to jump ship?

I’m highly amused. Do you know what they call self-wish? These are local propaganda which is terribly elementary. In 1999 we had PDP, AD and APP. After fourteen years in 2013, it is PDP only that has remained. AD had gone from AD into AC, into ACN, into something else and now going to APC.

APP had gone into ANPP and then later on they are going to something; they are going to APC. Now, CPC is a one-man party. Some politicians who lost out in PDP now see Buhari as their bread industry. So they hang on him and because he is very naรฏve, he thinks they are serious.

Did you say Buhari is naive?
Absolutely! He is politically naive. Yes, he is politically naive. Absolutely!

Could you be more explicit?
I would say he should be walking with his eyes wide open because those around him in 1999 were somewhere else. Were they with him? Our people will say if you see a horse fully dressed walking alone in the forest, it must have thrown the owner off. Don’t ride it because it threw somebody away.

I have been wondering; they abuse the PDP that we are murderers, party of riggers, a party of whatever – it is evil. Fine! Why do they want murderer governors in their midst? Why do they want us to be there? Number two, this so called APC is again what you call political fraud because you may change the nomenclature – change it ten times over. Did people in the newly named party come from heaven? They are the same old people.

Collapsed Building in Lagos killing no fewer than seven persons with 14 others injured.

Africcon Blogspot

Reports Says; IN LAGOS — A three-storey building at 29, Oloto Street, Ebutte Metta, Yaba Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Lagos, yesterday collapsed killing no fewer than seven persons with 14 others injured.

A one-year-old baby, a couple, identified as Bukky and Lanre, and a pregnant woman, a nursing mother, Iya AbdulBarki and her son were all pulled out of the debris dead.

Also, an 80-year-old Alhaji Ganiu Salami lost his life and has since been buried according to Islamic rites, while his daughter-in-law sustained injury.

Africcon Blogspot - Reports gathered that the 14 persons who sustained injuries when the building caved in at about 2:00 am, have all been admitted at the General Hospital, Lagos Island.

It was also learnt that the owner of the building identified as Alhaji  Dimeji, who also owns two other distressed buildings is on the run.

Mr. Ufuoma Ekpere, a resident who alerted other residents about the imminent collapse said: “I came back from work at about 11:00 pm. But on getting home, my wife was asleep. So I had to go to the kitchen myself to prepare what I wanted to eat. On getting to the kitchen, I discovered that some rubbles from the building had fallen off. But I didn’t take it serious. So I went to bed.

“At about 2:05 am, I woke up and discovered the entire building was cracking. While trying to alert the landlord, I discovered that the crack was getting wider. Then, I alerted other tenants and rescued my family. Immediately we came out, the building caved in.”

Community rescue team

Mr. Hakeen Adeyemi, a resident who also helped in the rescue operation, said: “A large per cent of the recovered bodies were women.

“The baby was recovered in the company of his two siblings who, however, survived and have been admitted in the general hospital. Those rescued were rushed to the hospital while some died before help could come their way.”

Another resident involved in the rescue operation, Mr. Sikiru Azeez, said: “If the equipment had come early, the number of casualities would have reduced. I know this because I was involved in the rescue operation since 2:10 am. I had to use my rechargeable lantern to search for the victims. And I assisted in recovering three bodies and rescued two persons.”

Families of the deceased

Sulaimon Shiaba, a brother to Bukky, who died in the collapse, said his sister was in her early 30s and traded in local and foreign fabrics.

“Bukky was sleeping in the house with her husband, Lanre and Juwon, my brother. She rented the apartment four years ago. And when she rented the place, I was her guarantor and there wasn’t any crack on the building but all we could remove from the building were her cloths and jewellery.”

I thought rapture had taken place

Another occupant who simply gave his name as Oluwaremilekun said:  “I had just finished watching a movie and was trying to doze off when I heard some cracks followed by a loud noise. At that point, I thought rapture had taken place and I started praying for mercy.

“Before I knew it,  I discovered that the floor was sinking and thought I was going to hell. I started shouting ‘have mercy Lord!’ Before I knew it, people started crying and shouting. I can’t tell how I managed to come out before I realised it was the building that collapsed. I am grateful to God for sparing my life because I am not better that those that died.”

A 28-year-old man identified as Olayinka Mogaji who resided in the ill-fated building said he was on their third floor apartment with his mother, his sister and a friend when they heard a loud noise, but before they could ascertain what was happening, the building came crumbling down on them.

“The walls fell on my mother before she could run out. It took the intervention of neighbours to save her. I thank God everyone in our apartment survived. Three of our neighbours on the second floor were not that lucky, as they all died.”

NEMA confirms

Confirming the incident, the information officer of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye said: “We received the alert about the collapsed building at about 2:35 am and we arrived at the scene 10 minutes later. Immediately we arrived, seven bodies were recovered.

“Among the seven bodies were one-year-old child, three women and five men were rescued from the debris.

“Affected were those who lived on the first and ground floors. It would have reduced if it wasn’t at night. But despite that we responded swiftly. Uptil 5:00 am, none of the agency had tuned up. If there are more people trapped in the building, we will know.”

NEMA spokesman arrested

A mild drama unfolded at the scene of the collapsed building after spokesperson for NEMA, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, was manhandled and arrested by policemen attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS.

His arrest, as gathered, was on the order of a senior officer of RRS, following Farinloye’s  attempt to  prevent the policemen from chasing away some residents who were involved in rescue operation before the arrival of rescue agents.

Men of the RRS arrived the scene at noon while NEMA and other rescue operators were still rescuing trapped victims from the debris. The policemen went into action by first sending away residents who were helping out. Journalists at the scene were also sent out.

At that point, Farinloye was said to have stopped the policemen from sending the youths away, explaining that they had been helping out in the rescue operation even before their arrival.

An unconfirmed report, however, quoted Farinloye as saying the senior  RRS officer who gave the directive for the residents to leave the scene was stupid. Apparently angry at the utterance, the officer reportedly  ordered Farinloye’s arrest.

Attempt to prevail on the officer failed as Farinloye was bundled out of the scene.

His arrest temporarily marred the rescue operation, as NEMA officials protested the arrest of their boss and thereafter, abandoned the scene.

Farinloye, as gathered, was taken to Denton police station where efforts to effect his release at about 4pm failed, as report had it that  the Commander of the RRS, Mr Akeem Odumosu, insisted that Farinloye would be charged to court today.

Not even entreaties by the chairman of Lagos Mainland  Local Government, Oladele Olakanye to Odumosu could change his mind on Farinloye’s release.

However, Report Says that Farinloye was realsed at about 5.50 pm.
