Fa - Wembley awaits FA Cup's kingmaker

  • Wembley awaits FA Cup's kingmaker
Africcon Report: The FA Cup presents Mancini and Benitez with an opportunity to add gloss to the season
    Africcon Media Sport – Football

    Wembley awaits FA Cup's kingmaker

Wembley awaits FA Cup's kingmakerAt times, it may have three wheels on its wagon, but Rafa Benitez's Chelsea keeps rolling along. They are on course for his stated objectives - an FA Cup win, a top four place and, after Thursday in Moscow, a Europa League too. The fact that Chelsea were just four points off Manchester United and in a League Cup semi when he arrived can be skirted for now. If Benitez grasped the poisoned chalice of Chelsea with his CV in mind, he is in sight of getting a glowing reference from Roman Abramovich.

Fatigue is an enemy of achievement. Benitez's fussy attitude to rotating might pay off but he is still dangerously short of bodies. Suspicions have been raised about that policy's effectiveness, especially in the light of Ashley Cole's muscle injury, which some have suggested is the result of too much inactivity rather than over-exertion. John Terry's slow return to prominence might be seen as another indicator of its downsides. For the moment, the possibility of a treble of sorts is possible though Chelsea may end up playing 70 games this season and still end up without a prize to their name. Echoes of Arsenal in 1979-80 - losing finalists in both FA Cup and European Cup Winner's Cup - and a few of Leeds United's seasons under Don Revie where a push on three or more fronts ended in treble the agony are to be avoided. There are signs of rattiness; David Luiz and Frank Lampard's half-time contretemps was either evidence of sagging togetherness, or in Benitez's world, a sign of winners wanting to win better.

Once Fernando Torres' lobbed goal had continued the rich vein of form that seemingly began with his having to wear a facemask - perhaps he can become football's Jason Vorhees - Chelsea looked set fair for the semi-finals but eventually had to ride out a belated Russian push. It would be perfectly understandable if Chelsea were to be found flagging in games. A thin squad has been flogged within inches of its life by participation in seven different competitions, and is coming up against a team perhaps looking the freshest of English football's main protagonists.

Earlier this week, Garry Cook, former Manchester City executive chairman, described Roberto Mancini as a 'winner'. That sponsorship came at Monday lunchtime, when such credentials might be openly contested. By 10pm that evening, there had been further reminders of the Italian's doggedness of spirit. His City team fought hard at Old Trafford, and Sergio Aguero's goal was the moment of class that came between the Mancunian candidates. Believe it or not, even with 12 points in hand, confidence is wobbling at Old Trafford. United travel to Stoke on Sunday with pressure on their shoulders.

City, having handed out a statement of intent for next season, can concentrate on a more realistic prospect of silverware. They may have to do it without David Silva, who collapsed to the Old Trafford turf in added time with a hamstring injury. Mancini will give his creative hub all the time he needs to recover and is optimistic of his availibility. Silva's probing and prompting would always be missed, but the win at United also revealed the power play that made City title winners last season, and won them the FA Cup two years previously.

The champions have a look of renewal about them. Vincent Kompany looks the better for his unauthorised Belgium exploits, while Aguero came off the bench to score the type of goal that Romario once patented. City look in tune to salvage something from this season. Mancini's moaning about last summer's transfer business has been unhelpful, and especially when he had such a good group of players at his disposal anyway. Next season is the aim, and suggestions are that Mancini and his superiors are at the planning stage already, but taking something from 2012-13 would represent more than salvation.

With due deference to the good burghers of Millwall and Wigan, Sunday's semi-final has the definite look of being the competition's kingmaker.

Chelsea player to watch - David Luiz

Whatever the content of Luiz's frank exchange of views with Frank Lampard in the Luzhniki Stadium, it revealed much of the Brazilian's standing within the Chelsea set-up. Luiz's self-confidence was evident from the moment he arrived at Stamford Bridge, and he looks to be the heir apparent to the big characters in the dressing room when Lampard and Terry depart. Benitez has leant heavily on him, either as an excellent anchorman or in his usual centre-half spot.

Manchester City player to watch - Yaya Toure

A new contract is signed, after some rather public brinkmanship tactics from his agent, but City are happy to pay the readies for a player of such importance. He grew in influence throughout Monday's Manchester derby, his power having its say before supplying the angled ball that allowed Aguero to space from which to weave magic. Toure is City's latterday Wembley hero. In 2011, it was his goals in semi and final that broke a 35-year trophy duck to usher in a new City.

Key battle: Petr Cech v Sergio Aguero

Aguero is known for his late arrivals, and Monday was a reminder of why he cost £38 million. Perhaps only Luis Suarez possesses the ability to snake through a defence with close control like he does, and Aguero is probably a better finisher too. Should he manage to perform a similar slalom through Chelsea's defence then he comes up against a goalkeeper who looks back to something approaching his best of 6-7 years ago. Cech's quarter-final save from Javier Hernandez may well be the Champagne moment of this season's competition, and his form continues to ensure Thibaut Courtois remains at Atletico Madrid.

Trivia: The two clubs have met at Wembley before, in the 1986 final of the Full Members' Cup, a long-forgotten competition set up in the wake of English clubs' exile from European football after the Heysel Disaster of 1985. It finished 5-4 to Chelsea, a scoreline that hid that they had led 5-1 at one point. Colin Lee grabbed a hat-trick for the London Blues, and David Speedie grabbed two. City's scorers were Mark Lillis (2), Steve Kinsey and an own-goal from Chelsea man-mountain Doug Rougvie.

Stats: Chelsea have been the dominant FA Cup team of recent years, but their current team is missing its own Wembley Wizard. Didier Drogba scored in the FA Cup finals of 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012, the only player to score in four finals. In all, he scored in six finals for Chelsea. Last season, his thunderous strike began a 5-1 semi-final rout of Tottenham Hotspur.

Odds: City are favourites at 2.30 at bet365, while a Chelsea win is 3.30, and a draw, meaning extra-time, of course is 3.50. You can back either team at 12.00 to win on penalties.

Prediction: City's power and freshness to give them victory.

Wigan captain Emmerson Boyce described his side's FA Cup semi-final victory over Millwall

  • Boyce in dreamland after Wigan win
Africcon Report: Wigan captain Emmerson Boyce described his side's FA Cup semi-final victory over Millwall
    Africcon Media Sport – Football

Wigan captain Emmerson Boyce described his side's FA Cup semi-final victory over Millwall as a "dream come true''. However, ugly scenes in the stands distracted attention from the 2-0 win.

Shaun Maloney congratulates Callum McManaman after he gave Wigan a 2-0 leadShaun Maloney congratulates Callum McManaman after he gave Wigan a 2-0 lead

Wigan reached the FA Cup final for the first time in the club's history as goals in either half from Shaun Maloney and Callum McManaman saw them past the Championship opposition.

"It's amazing, a dream come true for the club and the fans,'' Boyce told ESPN. "People have said a lot about the fans but they were excellent today. I want to say thank you too to the chairman... there are too many people to say thank you to. I can't wait for the final now. The chairman has been a long time waiting for this too. The manager has been excellent. The whole team has been excellent.''

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan had his playing career ended when he broke his leg in the 1960 FA Cup final - a match his Blackburn side went on to lose 3-0 to Wolves.

Although Maloney gave Wigan the lead after 25 minutes, they could not kill off the game until McManaman's strike 12 minutes from time.

"We always knew Millwall were going to be a tough game,'' Boyce said. "They had good opportunities and could have scored but we showed great character. It was a professional performance and we can look forward to the final now.''

On-loan Paul Scharner, who played in the League Cup final during his first stint at Wigan, added: "It's unbelievable. We are in the final. The chairman deserves it most, and the supporters. In the second half they were trying to get an equaliser but we kept a clean sheet and I'm so happy to reach the final.''

Wigan will return to Wembley on May 11 to play either Chelsea or Manchester City - who meet on Sunday - but Scharner is not concerned who they face next.

"It doesn't matter,'' he said. "The final is always tough and both teams are very strong.''

Maloney, named man of the match, had never progressed beyond the third round of the competition before this season and said he would need time to appreciate today's achievement.

"It's a massive occasion for us today, and it will probably sink in in the next couple of days what exactly lies ahead,'' he said. "The chairman has spoken publicly about what it means to him and the whole club - it's a massive thing.''

Admitting the game had been far from easy, he added: "The first half we controlled but in the second half Millwall pinned us right back and it felt tough until the second goal.''

Wigan are still in the relegation scrap at the foot of the Premier League, and while the FA Cup is a nice distraction, they will need to focus attention on the league in the coming weeks in order to avoid the drop.

"If we play like we did today we'll have a real chance,'' Maloney added.

Millwall manager Kenny Jackett was proud of his players and their FA Cup campaign overall, but admitted Wigan were too strong.

"I felt Wigan were good,'' he said. "We had a very good 20-minute spell in the second half and had them on the back foot, their keeper made some good saves but we needed a goal during that period to build on. It didn't happen, they scored another on the break and that killed the game off. But we put in a sterling effort. [Arouna] Kone was excellent, though, he was something else and really brought their midfield into it and helped them score an excellent first goal.''

Millwall are in a relegation fight of their own, sitting three points above the drop zone, and Jackett also talked about the importance of returning focus to the league.

"That's the most important thing now. We would have loved to have gone one further but realistically we have to be proud of what the players have done to get this far. Now we have six games left before the end of the season and two in hand on almost everybody around us so we need to get some wins.''

Wigan counterpart Roberto Martinez confirmed that Whelan would be afforded the honour of leading the side out for the final.

"Yes, we will get the chairman leading the team out,'' he said. "It will bring full circle his time with the FA Cup.''

Asked what reaching the final means, he said: "It means a lot as you can imagine. Not just the first time we're playing in a semi-final but the opportunity to reach the final, it's a big, big achievement for the players and they deserved it. So do the fans. A lot of people judge us on the numbers but its about the quality of the numbers.''

Admitting Millwall had made it hard work, he said: "We did expect that. Huge credit to Millwall who competed until the last second and there were plenty of difficult situations as they can be quite powerful.

"To handle being the favourites in a semi-final can be tough but I thought we did that magnificently, from the young players to the experienced players there was a real togetherness.''

McManaman was one of the stars for Wigan, and Martinez hopes his talent is now doing the talking following on from his nasty tackle on Newcastle's Massadio Haidara on his Premier League debut last month.

"It's great to see that it's now all about his talent,'' Martinez said. "He's an attacker, not a defender, and who can see that in how he takes the goal. He seems like he's been playing at Wembley many, many times. The whole situation has been very, very unfair on him, he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but today we saw the real Callum McManaman.''

Rafa Benitez said Chelsea have improved

  • Benitez claims he's made Blues better
Africcon Report: Rafa Benitez said Chelsea have improved under his leadership
    Africcon Media Sport – Football

Chelsea interim manager Rafael Benitez has lauded the improvements made by his squad since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Rafa Benitez said Chelsea have improvedBlog: Chelsea will be happy to face Tottenham's conquerors

And the Spaniard is confident that the club, with a successful spell in the next transfer window, will again be pressing for honours in the Premier League.

Benitez, who will step away from the Chelsea hot-seat at the end of the season, takes his charges on Sunday to Wembley to face Manchester City in the second semi-final of the FA Cup.

The Blues will then face Basle in the Europa League semi-finals later this month.

And Benitez believes those campaigns will benefit the players, the club and the coach set to replace him for next season.

"I'm sure I will leave some good players with more experience, " he said. "I cannot take credit for signing these players because they were already here, some of them very good players, but some of them are young and they'll be much better at the end of the season.

"The balance of the team is better now. The players are quite happy, quite pleased with the way we train and the things we do and they are learning every day.

"I'm sure next year these players will be much better. They'll have more experience, will have settled down in England. They've been growing, improving and learning. Next year, add two or three players, the team will be better.

"It's a very good team but experience has cost us points in some games and maybe some trophies. If you sign two or three, they can challenge.

"This team finished sixth last year, 20 points or whatever behind two teams. This year they will finish behind United, maybe far away, but closer to City. Next year, bring some new players in, they'll be closer."

But the 52-year-old is not blowing his own horn about his ability to have such a quick impact on the players, believing the time of managers staying at one club, such as Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson, for long periods of time is coming to an end.

"Football has changed. In other countries, maybe it's more normal to have managers for a short time, " Benitez said.

"In England people talk about doing your job for three years and a work in progress. But it's not the case now. Look at the number of managers fired in England'

"(Ferguson's reign is) something we won't see any more, especially in England. I don't think you'll see that again.

"Everything is going faster in life. If I say something now, someone will tweet it and it'll be already out. We don't try to analyse the big picture.

"We went to Moscow, came back at 3.30am, gave a press conference. Before you had rest. There's more pressure now, more anxiety, it's more demanding."

Benitez's arrival was an unpopular addition to the club for many of the Stamford Bridge faithful, continually letting him know he was neither needed nor wanted.

But he has refused to let the constant criticism from the stands waver him from his objectives, preferring to focus on Chelsea before heading home to family life at the end of the day.

"The way I cope with the pressure is trying to focus on the next challenge," he said. "I enjoy trying to do my best every time. You can win a game 5-0 but you're still not happy because you want something more. That's my nature.

"At the Real Madrid academy, finishing second was a disaster. If you have too much pressure, you go with your friends and family and relax a bit."

Information from the Press Association was used in this report.
