The Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim, has said security agencies were doing their best to overcome the security challenges in the country in spite of the dwilling budgetary allocation to the defence sector.
Ibrahim said the security agencies had to surmount all limitations to ensure that the asymmetric warfare, represented by activities terror organisations in the country, were effectively handled.
The CDS spoke while playing the host to members of the Indian National Defence Collage, Course 53, led by its Senior Directing Staff, AVM I.P Vipin, in Abuja on Monday.
The team had paid an earlier visit of the Minister of State for Defence, Mrs. Olusola Obada, where she called for increase in the number of Nigerians admitted to the Indian National Defence College.
The CDS added that the shrinking of budgetary allocations to the defence sector was not restricted to Nigeria but was indeed a global trend.
He said, “We inherited a robust Armed Forces from our heroes past; we celebrate that, and through a combination of resilience and can do spirit, we solve the problems our own ways deploying whatever capabilities at our disposal.
“Don’t forget, You have to contest, every inch of the ground for budget. Every country has its own peculiar challenges, so far as budgetary appropriation for defence is concerned.
“As a matter of fact, if you look at the world as a whole, it looks as of there is a consistent reduction in defence budget, across the board. Nigeria is not an exception; we have had to manage this crisis within the confines of so many limitations, but we are doing very well.”
He said that he was scheduled to have a crucial meeting with the Senate Committee on Defence, security and Intelligence on issues affecting the nation’s security after the meeting.
The Minister was quoted as having said Nigeria and India were at the level of implementation of decisions reached at a meeting of Joint Defence Committee of the two countries in April 2013.
