The Rivers Peoples’ Forum has said it plans to hold a massive protest to compel the police to arrest and prosecute the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike.
The group said it was calling for Wike’s arrest over his threat to make the state uncomfortable.
Wike, at a Grassroot Democratic Initiative event in Port Harcourt last week, was quoted to have had said, “For those who think that they can destroy Obio-Akpor (Local Government), we will make life uncomfortable for them.”
RPF, had last week, called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the minister over this comments, which it said was dangerous to democracy in the country and threatened the peace and security of Rivers State.
RPF, in a statement by its President, Charles Bekwele, on Monday, described Wike’s comment as a direct threat to the people of Rivers State.
It said, “It is a shame, an outrage, that the police instead of arresting and prosecuting Wike is allowing him to arrogantly and pompously roam the streets, making more provocative and hateful comments against the state and its people.
“And this is the same police that have declared wanted and arrested supporters of Governor (Rotimi) Amaechi for extremely flimsy reasons. So, why are they not arresting a man, who openly threatened the people, the peace and security of the state?
“Again, we are calling on the Inspector-General of Police to arrest and prosecute Nyesom Wike now for threatening the lives of Rivers people, for threatening the peace and security of Rivers State.”
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Government said on Monday that the current provocations against Amaechi by the opposition would not shift the governor’s focus from delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
The Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr. Tony Okocha, who spoke when the chairman and council of chiefs of Ekinigbo clan in Obio/Akpor Local Government of the state paid him a solidarity visit, said Amaechi would remain focused to pursue his development agenda for the people.
