The Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Nasir Ayilara, says the Independent National Electoral Commission is not happy with the activities of some political parties, especially those whose members have commenced campaign for candidates.
Ayilara said the campaigns negated the electoral time-table of INEC for the 2015 elections.
Speaking at the monthly meeting of National Forum of Heads of Federal Establishments, Oyo State chapter, Ayilara, who was represented by the Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state, Rafiu Adegbola, said some political activities would remain illegal until INEC released the guidelines for the 2015 elections.
He said, “INEC is aware of the public campaign for candidates by members of some political parties, which is against the schedule set by INEC. There is penalty for such conduct especially if a rival party goes to court.
“It is difficult for INEC to know initially because these groups hide under associations that have nothing to do with politics. But we have found out that they carry out political activities like campaigning for candidates.”
Ayilara also explained that the permanent voter card would not disenfranchise anyone who relocated to a new area before the elections.
He said, “If you register in a location and move to somewhere else, contact the electoral officer in the area and let him know your position. Also, if you lose your card, all you have to do is to swear to an affidavit in court and go to the nearest police station to explain the circumstance that led to the loss of the card.
“This process will guarantee a new card to be issued by the electoral officer in the area. However, time for the replacement of lost card will be announced when INEC releases its time table.”
Revisiting the 2011 elections in the state, Ayilara noted that it was the” best and most accepted,” adding that there were fewer petitions by candidates and political parties compared to the situation in 2007.
“The present commission under the chairmanship of Prof. Attahiru Jega is committed to reducing further the number of petitions generated by the outcome of the 2011 general elections. We have identified the channel to reduce litigation and petitions,” he said.
