Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba, has blamed piracy, crude oil theft and human trafficking for slow economic growth in Nigeria and Africa in general.

Ezeoba stated this at a conference organised by the Nigerian Navy in partnership with the International Quality and Productivity Centre in Lagos on Tuesday.

He said, at the event tagged,  ‘Delivering maritime security to Africa,’ that for many African navies, one of the major implications of the emerging security equation was the increasing demand for maritime policing functions.

He said, “Primarily, the current security breaches in the maritime space around Africa is of serious concern to all of us.

“What is perhaps more disturbing is that much of the activities associated with the evolving threat scenario around Africa’s maritime domain are directed at the economic lifeline of both littoral and landlocked states.

“In other words, the scourge of various forms of illegalities such as sea robbery, piracy, human trafficking, particularly pipeline vandalism and crude oil theft constitute serious challenges to the development of Africa.”

Some of the countries which participated in the conference are Spain, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Germany, Saudi Arabia, United States, Cameroon, Malaysia, France, United Arab Emirates, Togo, Pakistan,  Canada, Tanzania,  Netherlands and South Africa.

The Ghana Navy CNS, Rear Admiral Geoffrey Biekro, also called on navies in the sub-region to partner together and protect the maritime domain from being used to perpetuate illegalities.

He lamented that criminals had taken advantage of the lack of synergy between the navies of the respective countries and called for a better relationship.

The Minister of State for Defence, Mrs. Olusola Obada, said the conference symbolised a strategic collaborative initiative between the NN and international maritime stakeholders.
