N1.7bn Oyo Pension Fraud: EFCC Arrests 17

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested 17 persons implicated in the alleged stealing of N1.7bn pension funds of retirees of Oyo State primary schools.

A statement by the EFCC Acting Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspects were arrested in a sting operation.


The suspects who are officials of the Oyo State Local Government Pension Board include Muili Hakeem Aderemi (former Executive Secretary); Iyabo Giwa (former Treasurer); Adeshina Jimoh Ayoade (former Cashier); Oguntayo Banji (former Internal Auditor); and Adebiyi Olasunbo Musediq (former Admin Officer).

Others are, Muili Adedamola, Salewa Adedeji, Kareem Rasheed, Johnson Bosede, Adeduntan Johnson, Olomide Olaide, Oyebamiji Akinlolu, Adewale Kehinde, Saka. M. Ikeola, Oluokun Funmilayo, Oyetunji Taiwo and Olujimi Adebayo.

EFCC said its investigations “showed that all the pension offices in the 33 local governments in Oyo state were affected by the scam.”

The pension board reportedly received a total sum of N4, 140,020,501.72 from the Federation Account and the Oyo State Government between September 2010 and February 2011.

Of this amount, the anti-graft agency alleged that the suspects fraudulently withdrew about N1.711, 894, 667.05.

“Items recovered from the suspects include buildings; poultry farms; power generating sets and undeveloped plots of land. The suspects will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded,” the commission added.
