The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has officially declared Chief Tony Nwoye as their candidate for November 16 Anambra State governorship election, in spite of the outcome of a parallel congress which held in Awka last Saturday.
The national chairman of the (PDP) Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, made this declaration when he received the report of the Chairman of the Anambra state governorship congress committee, Katsina State Governor Ibrahim Shema. Shema submitted the report of the governorship primary to the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
Two gubernatorial candidates Chief Tony Nwonye and Chief Andy Ubah had emerged at the parallel party primaries at the weekend.
While Nwonye polled 498 votes from the Ken Emeakayi- led PDP in the state, Ubah polled 645 votes to emerge winner in the Ejike Oguebego faction.
INEC maintained that it recognised Oguebego as chairman while PDP insisted that Emeakayi was their recognised chairman. INEC however monitored, Oguebego’s led primaries but did not monitor that of Emeakayi.
As a fallout, President Goodluck Jonathan will today (Tuesday) meet with leaders of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the emergence of two candidates of the party for the November governorship election in Anambra state.
However, the national chairman of PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur declared Nwoye their candidate for the Anambra State governorship election.
Speaking yesterday Tukur said “Tony Nwoye is the winner and the candidate of the PDP in the November 16 Governorship Election”.
To the Shema committee Tukur said, “Your conduct gave us hope and vindicated our members that the party belongs to the people; that’s what democracy demands. It is the will of the people according to the slogan of our party that power belongs to the people. The people shall decide who represents them at any level. It cannot be otherwise, considering the quality of people we sent to Anambra state. The people have spoken”.
He described the outcome of the election as fair and transparent, saying, “this is what we promised the people because the party belongs to the people. The party belongs to the people and let the owners of the party decide as they have done. The people have spoken and decided… This is what democracy is all about. This is the slogan of the party; power belongs to the people”.
In the presentation of his report, Shema said that 902 delegates were accredited with 14 statutory delegates making a total of 916 delegates for the governorship primary elections.
He said that Comrade Tony Nwoye scored 498 votes to come first, while Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu came second with 357 votes, while Alex Obeoguli came third with 13 votes.
Other results, he said include Walter Okeke who scored 7 votes and Josephine Anenih scored six and Agape Kramer, Senator Emma Anosike scored one vote each.
Governor Shema said that Senator Andy Ubah was absent at the governorship primary elections that took place at the Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, while the accreditation of delegates took place at the Women Centre also in Awka.
In answer to a question on why the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did not monitor the governorship primary election, Governor Shema said, “We invited INEC; you can go ask them why they did not come”.
The deadline for the submission of the names of the governorship candidate by the political parties contesting the Anambra state governorship election is September 2.
