Arsene Wenger admitted that he thinks there are still issues to iron out

Goal-line technology is here in English football – the most important alteration to the rules of the game in 150 years, say the FA – but it all comes down to a vibrating watch.

That is how Premier League referees will be told the straightforward fact of whether or not the ball has crossed the line.

I was convinced, but when Arsene Wenger stepped on the pitch to inspect matters, he seemed to need a bit more persuading – particularly over the one-second delay.

‘I’m very happy,’ said the Arsenal manager. ‘It’s very important that there is justice. It’s a bit more sophisticated and complicated than you would imagine at the start. It took quite a while and you see it’s not as easy as when you first have the idea.

‘My worry is where the ball goes over the line, then comes back, and then there is a foul on the defender. How does the referee, who blows for the foul, know it has not been after the ball went in?
