Despite a disappointing Games Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor will have learned much. It is hard to escape the fact, however, that with the start of his competitive season only four days away, the problems that presented themselves back at the start of July refuse to go away.

There is no need to panic just yet. United are the Barclays Premier League champions and the European trading window does not close for another 24 days.

Nevertheless, Moyes needs to find a resolution to the two main issues that trouble him... and quickly.

The increasingly tedious situation created by Wayne Rooney’s desire to leave is not of Moyes’ making and will move at its own natural pace. An official transfer request is imminent, but that won’t necessarily change anything dramatically.
