Taraba Crisis: Tukur To Visit Jalingo

Afric-tv24 - Zamfara...

Afric TV24 -  Update

Following the current political crisis that has engulfed Taraba State since the return of ailing Governor Danbaba Suntai, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, is expected to arrive in Jaingo, the state capital, during the week.

Suntai’s return to the state last Sunday had generated lots of political crisis as his loyalists insist that the ailing governor is fit to resume while the state Assembly has directed the acting governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, to continue to act until the governor is fit enough to steer the ship of the state.

But the confusion occasioned by the crisis has necessitated Tukur to wade into the crisis with a view to resolving the political differences among the warring parties.

During  his visit to the state, Tukur is expected to meet with Suntai’s family members, the state acting governor, the speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, the deputy speaker, other principal officers and other top government functionaries.

Ex-commissioner wants Tukur to respect constitution

The sacked commissioner of information, culture and tourism, Mr Emmanuel Bello,  has urged Tukur to respect the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as he moves to wade into the crisis in Taraba State.

In a statement issued yesterday in Jalingo and made available to Afric-tv24, Bello  asked Tukur to make the nation’s constitution his guide.

The release further said that if Tukur took sides in the ongoing imbroglio, Tarabains would vehemently resist it.

Cabinet dissolution: civil servants divided

But the political crisis  has divided the  civil servants in the state as they are now  confused over who are in charge of the ministries/government organs and who they will take instructions from.

An investigation by Afric-tv24 at the state secretariat, Jalingo, on Friday revealed  that workers were in a dilemma over who controlled the office of the secretary to the state government (SSG) and that of chief of staff (COS), Government House administration.

At the office of the SSG, Afric-tv24 reliably gathered that the situation is  so pathetic. Since the purported dissolution of the cabinet last Wednesday, the office now parades  two SSGs: the incumbent one, Mr Gavey Yaweh,  who was holding the office before the purported dissolution, and Barrister Gibon Kataps, who until the announcement was the state attorney-general and commissioner for  justice.

According to a reliable  source in the SSG’s office,  Kataps was in the office on Thursday as the new SSG while the following day (Friday) Yaweh also appeared in  the office still as the recognised SSG.

Investigations by Afric-tv24 also indicated that members of staff in various ministries are not aware of their commissioners’ whereabouts  since the purported dissolution of the Exco last Wednesday while a few who managed to speak with our correspondent said they were still waiting till today since the state officials attended the just concluded PDP national convention in Abuja.

When contacted over the matter on Friday, Yaweh told Afric-tv24 that he had been in the office till date despite the purported dissolution.

He said, ‘’Mr. LEADERSHIP, you have come to my office and you met me discharging my duties and so, go and report your observation. ’’

Efforts to speak with Kataps  over  the development proved abortive at press time.

Civil servants in the state are anxiously waiting for today  to determine who pilot the affairs of the various ministries including the offices of the chief of staff and the SSG in the state.
