Africcon Report: Oyo PDP accuses Ajimobi of impunity

Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State on Tuesday accused Governor Abiola Ajimobi of failing to conduct local government elections, describing it as an act of impunity.
Caretaker committee members, appointed by the Ajimobi-led Action Congress of Nigeria administration, have been running the councils since 2011.
The PDP, in a statement, on Tuesday by its state Publicity Secretary, Lukman Agboluaje, said it was surprising that the ACN that claimed to be championing the cause of democracy engaged in such impunity.
It said, “The ACN government incessantly manipulates the state Assembly into prolonging the tenure of its hand-picked ‘errand boys’ rather than allowing democratically elected representatives to govern the 33 council areas.
“The ACN undemocratic action is born out of selfish aim. We are calling on well meaning individuals to prevail on the ACN government to put in place machinery towards conducting local government election”.
The ACN, however, dismissed the PDP allegation, saying the later had no respect for the rule of law.
In a statement by the ACN state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Dauda Kolawole, the party said the council poll was on put hold because of a pending court case.
It said, “If the PDP had any respect for the judiciary, it should have waited for the judgment over the matter. This is a lawlessness that can be found in the PDP’s daily interface with the people”.
Quoting the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ojo Adebayo, the ACN said, “Rather than political considerations, the reason why the state had not held the local government elections was legal.”
