Commuters in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) were yesterday stranded as drivers of one of the high capacity buses on the Nyanya-Karu routes embarked on strike.
Commuters met the ugly situation when they got to the Nyanya bus stop yesterday only to find that the buses were not out for business. The situation was made worse by the limited number of vehicles on the road following the commencement of the three-days warning strike by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
Recall that the Federal Capital Territory Administration on June, 3, 2013, commenced the implementation of the FCT new transport policy which saw the introduction of high capacity bus operation in Abuja city centre to replace mini buses popularly called ‘Araba’, which are now restricted to the satellite towns and area councils in the territory.
Africcon blogspot investigations yesterday revealed that commuters enroute the city centre were stranded for several hours because of unavailability of buses to convey them to the city.
As early as 6:30am, a mammoth crowd of commuters was seen at the Nyanya bus stop waiting for vehicles even as there was intense struggle to board the few private and commercial vehicles that came to the area.
Africcon blogspot gathered that some of the commuters got to the bus stop as early as 5am but were unable to get a bus to convey them to town while the buses remained parked at their terminal in Kugbo with no drivers in sight.
Chief Executive Officer of Shaanxi Automobiles, operators of the green high capacity buses, Kunle Omoniyi who confirmed the development in a telephone interview with our correspondent attributed the situation to managerial issues with the bus drivers.
Omoniyi said, “We had managerial issues with the drivers this morning but it has been resolved and they have since started operations.”
